Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. OSTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Adjustable Printers Galleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Asuch as will ens able others skilled in the art to which it` appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to adjustable galleys for use by compositors and` printers, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a galley having an ad# justing bar and a locking bar, saidadjusting bar adapted to be moved longitudinally, of the galley to provide for any width of column of type to be set, and said locking bar adapted to be adjusted'ag'ainst the last line of type in the job or form to lock the j same in place.
Another object of the invention is'to provide a printers galley which can be adjusted to any width of column within the limits of the galley and which will be provided with means for rmly locking the printed matter in place when it has been set and placed on the galley.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a printers galley in which various shapes of forms may be set in which `the lines are of increasing or decreasing lengths progressively, and means being provided for locking the form and means being provided also for determining the width of the column by graduating marks on the marginal flanges of the galley and also upon the adjusting bar and locking bar, said graduated marks being arranged in standard point printers measure, that is to say, 72 points or six picas to the inch.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top planview of a galley made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is. an end or edge view of the galley, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the galley, Fig. l is a perspective view of the adjustable or gage bar, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the locking bar shown broken away in the center, and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the lock- Vin end of the locking bar.

The locking bar comprises the two parallel members made of slightly resilient metal andsaid members 10 being spaced apart by means vof a block 11 near one end and a. ange or spacer 12 at the opposite end while a block 13, forming a housing for afbolt to be hereinafter described also serves to hold the members 10 the required distancel apart. Connected tothe upper bar or member 10 and projecting inwardly toward the opposite bar is a series of studs or pins 14, said pins being preferably spaced apart the width through any of the openings 6 in the side i member 2, while at the oppositeV end of the locking lbar is a projecting pin 18 which fits in anyof the holes 6 in the opposite sidel bar.
.The gage bar 19 is of a thickness to ex-l tend between the two bars 10 of the lockingmember, and at the opposite end of the gage bar 19 spacers 2O are secured underneath the bar to hold said bar in alinement with the space between the two members l0. A

A sliding bolt 15 is mounted in the block 13 and provided'with a spring 16 Y which projects the bolt 15 through the blockl ico bers 3, while the pins 14 on the locking bar are adapted to ent-er any oneof a series of holes 22 in the gage bar, said holes being spaced apart the distance of a pica or two, as the case may be. rlhe locking bar is provided with graduation marks a on the upper member, and the gage bar 19 is provided with graduation marks b on the scale point measure.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the gage bar 19 may be adjusted transe versely of the galley at any point between the twc members of the klocking bar and held in position by the stud 14 to provide any widthof column desired, and after ther typehas been set and placed on the galley it maybe locked by moving the locking bar up against the foot of the form. It will also be obvious that the gage bar 19 may be adjusted at an angle by placing the pin at one point in the end member 3 of the galley1 frame and securing it at the required angle to one of the studs 1st of the locking bar.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim. y
W hat is claimed is A printers galley provided with a marginal frame having a series of perforations therein, a longitudinal extending locking bar comprising a pair of parallel members,
amseries of downwardly extending pins arranged on the inner,` face of the upper member, blocks disposed between and adjacent the ends of the parallel members thereby spacing said members, one of said blocks having a longitudinal aperture therein, and the other an outwardly extending stud, a recess block adjacent said apertured block, a spring catch bolt slidably mounted in said recess block and adapted to extend through said apertured block, a inger hold on said bolt adapted to bear against said apertured block thereby limiting the movement of the same, whereby said locking bar is adapted to be vertically adjustable on said frame, a vertical gage bar having a series of apertures formed therein, said gage bar being adapted to extend through the said parallel members of the locking bar whereby one of said pins on the upper member can engageJ in one of said apertures in the gage bar, thereby locking the gage bar, and a stud on the end of said gage bar adapted to engage in one of the apertures in the galley in thev marginal frame, whereby a form can be locked on the galley.,
