To all whom it mayconoernofi "Be it known that I, YOUNG S. SrALLwonTn, citizen of the United States, residing at Slidell, in the parish of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in spittoon-Handles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a. receptacle carrier and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to a spittoon or simllar receptacle, when it is desired to remove the vessel to a place where the cleaning operation of the same may be affected without the hands of the operator coming in contact with the vessel. p 1

A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which when attached to the receptacle may be held in lock engagement therewith, until released by the operator thereby allowing free use of both hands of the operator for any purpose he may see fit during the cleaning of the receptacle.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be attached to a receptacle of the class described, in such a manner as to in no way interfere with the removal of the debris or fluid of the same, but rather to facilitate that operation.

The invention consists in the improve ment, construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing :Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the receptacle carrier in engagement with a spitton. Fig. 2 is a side elevation upon an enlarged scale of the receptacle carrier shown partly in section. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a. similar section of Fig. 3 with the clamping jaws spread to open position and in engagement with the eyes or loop members. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the sleeve and the associated clamping jaws.

The letter B designates my receptacle carrier as an entiredevicezwhich comprises a handle member 3 having a conic al shape sleeve-4: attached to the-bottom end thereof as'at 5. The sleeve 4 is split upon oneside as at 6 along its entire length while its other side 7' forms an attaching means for s aid sleeve to the handle member 3. The sleeve is further split along fitsfbottom' peripheraled'ge to form pairs of spaced jaws 8 and 9, the'pair of jaws 8 and the sleeve l'being adapted to aline with each other while the jaws 9 are spaced apart or away from each other. The handle member 3 is beveled as at 10 for a portion of its length along the inside of the, sleeve 4.

Mounted between the beveled face 10 on the handle 3 and the split portion of the sleeve 4: is a cone-shape enlargement 11 upon a rod or bar 12, the said rod or bar 12 being slidably held in engagement with the handle member 8 by guides 13 and 13. The end of the rod 12 is bent as at 14 to form a finger engaging portion 15, while below the finger engaging portion 15 are a series of ratchet teeth 16.

Mounted upon the upper end of the handle member 3 is a spring actuated locking member 17 adapted to engage the teeth 16, upon the bar 12.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that when it is desired to attach the carrier to a spittoon the end of the handle member 3 is grasped with the right hand and the jaws 8 inserted between one of the eyes or loop members 2. The handle member is then moved forwardly until the jaws 9 engage with the other loop members 2 upon the receptacle A. The index finger is then engaged with the finger portion 15 of the rod 12 and the rod 12 drawn toward the top of the handle 3. By this operation the coneshape portion 11 upon the rod 12 spreads apart the pairs of jaws 8 and 9 and causes the ends of the loop members 2 to engage in the notches 18 of said jaws, whereupon a receptacle or vessel may be lifted from the floor and carried from place to place. It

will also be noted that the locking paw 17 having engagement with the teeth 16 upon the rod 12 during the upward movement of said rod toward the top of the handle 3 now prevents the jaws 8 and 9 from becoming disengaged with the loops 2 until released by the operator.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, is V 1. In combination, a receptacle having eye members thereon, a handle member provided with a split sleeve, jaws formed on the sleeve and adapted for engagement with the eye members, and means adapted for manual operation secured within the sleeve and to the handle members for engaging the jaws with the eye members.

In combination, a receptacle having loop members thereon, a handle member having a resilient split sleeve, a plurality of jaws formed on said sleeve and adapted for engagement with the loop members, and manually operated means slidable within thesleeve and upon the handle member for yieldably engaging saidjaws with the loop members.

3. In combination, a receptacle having a plurality of loop members thereon, a handle member provided with a split resilient sleeve, pairs of jaws formed integral with said sleeve and adapted for engagement with the loop members, a rod having an enlarged portion thereon slidable in said sleeve and along the handle member for engaging the jaws with the loop members, and means carried by the handle for locking said rod against movement in one direction.

4. In combination, a receptacle having eye members thereon, a handle member provided with a split sleeve, jaws formed on the sleeve and adapted for engagement with. the eye members, a rod having ratchet teeth thereon, said rod being adapted to be manually moved within the sleeve and along the handle member for engaging the abovementioned jaws with the eyemembers, and a locking paw carried by the handle memher and engageable with the teeth upon said bar for holding the abovementioned jaws against movement.
