Description

J. A GIBSON.
SCREW HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR SCREW DRIVERS.-
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 9. I915.
. 1,159,016 Patented Nov. 2,1915.
Que Luau "ran s rarn scREw-IioLnrnG ATTACHMENT son sonnwmnrvnns.
Application filed March 9&1915. Serial No. 13,202.
. To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, Josnrrr .ALoNzo G1B- soon a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of-Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screw-Holding Attachments for Screw-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to screw holding at tachments for screw drivers.
The invention has for its object to produce a simple and effective device capable of being easily and. quickly applied 'to an ordinary screw driver for the urpose of holding the screw in position with respect to the driver blade, enabling theliscrew to be applied and started with one hand.
. A further object of the inventionis to so arrange the screw holding member that when not required for use, after starting the screw, it may be readily moved to an out-ofthe-way position. 4
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and arrangement of the component parts of the A device.
.VVit-h these and other ends in view which will readily appear a the nature of the ,invention is better understood, the same .consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement: and combination of parts .which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated 'a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being,'however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the .claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the.drawing,Figure 1 is aside view.
showing the holding device applied to an,
ordinary .screw driver in position for opera tion. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holding devigc detached. Fig. is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. view-taken on the line 44 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved device comprises a rectangular frame 15 provided at the ends thereof, adjacent to one side, with openings 16 for the passage of the shank 17- of an ordinary I screw driver ofi which theframe may be' Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional.
'drivingit home. It will be seen securely retained in ad usted' position by means of a set screw 18 bearing against the shank 17 and holding it forcibly against the walls of the openings 16, the screw 18 being threaded through one side member of the frame. The ends of the frame are provided adj a-cent to the other side member with opeiilings 19 for the passageof a rod 20 having a thumb piece or handle 21 at one .end adjacent to the handle 22- of the screw ,driver The rod 20 is provided with apingfi G lena,
ing transversely therethrough and engag ing at one end a. slot 24 in the proximate side member of. the frame, said pin. serving the rarnn r craves.
Specification of Letters Patent. PatQILtBdNOVQZ, 1915. I 1
three-fold purpose, first, of limiting the slid ing movement of the rod, second, of preventing the rod from turning about its axis, and third, to form an abutment for one end of a helical spring 25 which is coiled about the rod, and the other end abuts on one end of the frame, thereby forcing the rod 20 rearwardlylin the direction .ofthe handle of the screw driver. Pivotally connected with the forward end of the rod 20 which extends be yondthe frame 15 is an arm fihwhich constitutes a screw holding ineirrber, said arm being provided at its free'ehdwith a bifurcated claw 27 to engage 'the shank of a screw, the latter being seen at 28. The arm 2G is pivotally connected with the rod 20 by means of a screw 29 which permits the parts to be readily assembled or disassembled.
In operation, the frame 15 is mounted on ,the shank of the screw driver in such a position that the bit 30 of the latter Will engage between the prongs of the bifurcated claw 27. By pushing on the thumb piece 21 the rod 20 with the arm 26 will be moved forwardly, thus permitting a screw to be ad: justed by placing its shank between the prongs of the claw-.27 with itshead iinpinging on said prongs, after which by releasing pressure on the thumb piece 21, the rod will be retracted'by the action of the spring 25, peru'litting the bit of the blade to engage the notch of the screw which will thus be securely .held while being started. After starting the screw, the holding device mayhe disengaged therefrom, and the arm 26 having the retaining claw 27 may then beturned to the out-of-the-way position shown in dotted line in 1, thus enabling the screw driver-to be manipulated in the cusno:
tomary manner for tightening the screw and from the foregoing that I,
:mai
have produced a very simple and effective screw holding device or attachment which may be quickly and readily applied to an ordinary screw driver. It is obvious that the appliance may be made in different sizes and also that the slots or openings for the passage of the shank of the screw driver may be modified according to the shape and character of such shank.
Having thus described the invention, what is ciaimed as new, 1s:
In a screw holding attachment of the class described, a frame having openings for the passage of a shank of a screw driver, and means for securing it adjustably on said shank one side member of said frame being provided with a longitudinal slot, a slidable rod extending longitudinally through the frame and having a thumb piece at one end, an actuating spring for rod, a pin extending through the rod and engaging the longitudinal slot in the frame to limit the movement of the rod, to prevent it from turning about its axis and to form an abutment for one end of the actuating spring,
and an arm connected pivotally with the forward end of the rod that extends through the frame and having a screw holding bifurcated claw.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
