UNITED STATES GRANDALL J. NORTH, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-SUPPORTS.
$pecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,886, dated June 13, 1871.
Be it known that I, GRANDALL J. NORTH, of Auburn, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in a Device for Holding a Book, of which the following is a specification:
The nature and object of this invention are to hold a book open to read or copy from, for the, convenience of a copyist or student, of which the following is a correct description; and accompanying the specification is a drawing in which the invention is fully illustrated, with letters of reference to the parts, and forms a part of this application.
The drawing is a perspective view of my improvement, of which A is the upright part of the holder in three sections, 0 d g. B is a clip surroundingthe upright parts or sections, with a thumb-screw, G, to hold the parts firmly in any position of adjustment. D D are legs and feet for its support, with ends turned up to form hooks e e to hold the book. I I, attached to the upright C, is an upper support for the book when open. F, curved as at n n,is the upper holder of the book when open, and is attached to the curved uprights G andconnecting-links 0, forming a spring to hold it in position on the book. E E are braces for its support in an inclined position.
It will be observed that the parts forming the frame are arranged for adjustment to accommodate books of various sizes, and, from its construction, the very light material used, the prompt and easy mode of adjustment, render it valuable, as it may be so adjusted as to occupy but small space in packing for conveyance, and serve in all cases as a good substitute for the ordinary wood frame or stand in common use.
What I claim as my improvement on a bookstand is 1. The upright A, made in three sections of wire, 0 g d, with its clip B and thumb-screw U, as shown and described.
2. The curved arms F, attached to the curved uprights G on top of the frame, and connect ing-link 0, forming a spring to hold it in posi tion on the book, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the upright frame A in sections 0 g :1, clip B, thumb-screw 0, legs 1) constructed with ends 0 e, braces E E, cross bar or support I, holder F, curved uprights G, and connecting-link 0, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
