Application filed August 22, 1914 Serial No. 858,061.
To all whom itmay concern; Be it known that I, FRED W. MEYE a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopand lVa-ste Boxes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification. V This invention is a novel improvement in stop boxes or valves and stop and waste boxes and isparticularly designed for use in connection with outside water pipes such as are used for hydrants and for hose connections; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved and simple construction whereby the flow of water may be ef feotively controlled, and when the water is cut off any water remaining in the boX is permitted to escape, and also any water remaining in the pipes beyond the box can be permitted to escape, thus preventing injury to the valves or box by freezing of water standing in the pipes. And also for use with street cut-off valves controlling the connection of house pipes with the water main. 7 T will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the complete device. In the drawings l designates a'tubular casing the lower end of which is connected to a T-shaped casting 2, the shank or stem 2 of which istubular and extends vertically upward and is divided by a partition 29 into two vertical passages 2 and 2 which are separated by said partition. The lower end ofthis casting 2 has oppositely projecting tubular extensions or nipples 2 andZ; and it may also have above thesenipples an annular danger internally threaded for the en gagement of the casing 1 as shown; the passage 2 connects with the nipple 2" and the passage 2 withthe nipple 2. Inclosing the lower part of the casting 2 is a sand box 1, which may be detachably-secured to the casting 2 by means ofshoe- clamps 1 and 1 the upper'ends of which are slipped over the nipples 2 and 2 while their lower ends are hooked under the box 1 in the usualinanner. 'lhe'shoe-clainps are secured in position. on
the nipples by means of couplings 8 and 3 by which couplings the inlet and outlet pipes 3f and3 are connected to the casting 2. The pipe may leadvto a water main or supply, while the pipe 3 leads to any desirable point of distribution.
The casting 2 is provided with an annular flange 2 surrounding its shank, and above the nipples 2 2 whichflange is internally threaded and engaged by the lower end of the tubular-casing 1 of the-box. Said casing is similarly connectedv at top to an annular flange 1 depending from the top member 1 of the box.
Slidably fitted upon and around the shank 2? of the casting is an annulus t which is preferably made to closely fit the said shank and is slidable longitudinally thereof. And this annulus a is screwed into the lower end of a cup-shaped member 4 which surrounds the upper end of the shank. A water-tight connection may be made between the member a and the exterior of the shank 2 by the annulus &- and any suitable packing as indicated at t in the drawings so that water cannot escape exteriorly from the cup i when the valve is open. Within the cup is a valve which may consist of a diskfi which may be of any suitable material adapted to make a close water-tight. joint between the cup-member, and the upper end of the shank 2 of casting 2, so as to positively close passage 2 and prevent communication between the upper end of such passage and the upper end of the passage 2 while the cup-member is lowered as shown in Fig. 1, thus cutting off the supply of water to the pipe 3. The disk 6 may be removably secured in the member t 'by means of a pin or screw 6 extending through a central openingin the washer and tapped into the member 45* as shown.
The cup-member 4 is connected in any suitable manner to the lower end of a valve rod or tube 4-, the upper end'of which is connected to a bifurcated clutch member 4n which engages a flange 5 on the lower end of a valve operating screw 5, whichis tapped through the bottom of the box 1 and through a threaded flange5 formed on a plate 5 which may be secured in the top portion 1 by means of a bolt 5 as indicated in Fig. 1. By turning the screw 5, by means of a suitable wrench or key, the rod tfican be raised or lowercdso as to raise or lower the cup 4: and open or close the valve 6.
r In the shankQ near. theupper end of pas-V sage 2 is an opening 2* through which water can pass from the lnslde of the cupinto said passage 2, or vice versa. 7 In the outer wall of the shank'2 adjacent the chamber 2 is a groove 2 which extendsfrom a point below the lowermost-point assumed by the annulus 4 to ;a'point slightly above the top of this 7 annulus when the valve is closed, for a purpost hereinafter explained. lVhen the screw 5 is turned so as to forcibly depress rod l thetop of the cup forcibly seats valve 6 upon the top of the shank2 and prevents escape of waterfroin the passage'Q 'and into the passage '2. Thepart 1 may be made in theform of a box so as to inclose screw 5 and plate'5 and may be closed by a cover 1 in" the usual manner.
O perationz VVhen the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1, if the cup et be raised the valve 6 will be openedand allow Water to pass up through the passage 2 into the cup and thence through the passage 2 to pipe 3. When screw 5 is turned so as to depress cup a valve 6 will be seated on the shank 2 and close passage 2 and cut oil the flow of water. In the lowest'position of the 7 cup the upper end of the passage 2 of the drain groove Q is in communication wlth the interior of the. cup and permits water which has been trapped in the cup 4 to drain into the casing and escapeintothe sand cup and out through an opening 1 in the bottom thereof. Anywater in the pipes connected with nipple/2? and above thelevel of the opening 2 can escape through saidopenmg into thecup and thence through the drain groove 2 into the casing out at the passage r 1 when the valve closed.

said shank having a passage in its wall extending from a point outside of the cup to a point inside thereof when the cup is in its lowermost position to permit drainage from the cup when the valve is closed; and the casting having an opening within the cupmember communicating with the outlet channel whereby water may drain back from the pipe through the cup to the outlet.
3. In combination, a casting having parallel inlet and outlet passages, a hollow cupshaped member slidably telescoping the end of the casting at the adjacent ends of both passages and movable longitudinally of the passages to simultaneously cover the adjacent ends of both passages to close communication therebetween or to simultaneously uncover their ends and establish communication through its interior between the adj acent ends of said passages.

In combination, a casting having parallel inlet and outlet passages, a hollow cupshaped member slidably telescoping the end of the casting at the adjacent ends of both passages and movable longitudinally of the passages to simultaneously cover the adja- 7 cent ends of both passages to close comm-unication therebetween or to simultaneously uncover their ends and establish communication through its interior between the adja cent ends of said passages; said casting also having a drain passage beside the other passages and extending from a point outside the cup-shaped member to a point inside thereof when the latter is in its lowermost position.
5. In combination, a casting having parallel inlet and outlet passages, a hollow cupshaped member slid-ably telescoping the end of the casting at the adjacent ends of both passages and movable longitudinally of the V passages to simultaneously cover the adjacent ends of both passages to close communication therebetween or to simultaneously uncover their ends and establish communication through its interior between the adj acent ends of said passages; with a top box connected to said casting, a valve operating member in said box, and a connection between said valve operating member and said cup-shaped member whereby the latter may be raised or lowered to open or close the valve. 1

In combination, a casting having parallel inlet and outlet passages, a hollow cupshaped member slidably telescoping the end of the casting at the adjacent ends of both passages and movable longitudinally of the passages to simultaneously cover the adjacent ends of both passages to close communication therebetween or to simultaneously uncover their ends and establish communication through its interior between the adjacent ends of said passages; said casting also having a drain passage beside the other passages and extending from a point outside the cup-shaped member to a point inside thereof when the latter is in its lowermost position; with a top box connected to said casting, a valve operating member in said box, and a connection between said valve operating member and said cup-shaped member whereby the latter may be raised or lowered to open or close the valve.
7. In combination, acastinghaving parallel inlet and outlet passages in its shank and inlet and outlet nipples communicating therewith at its lower end, a cup-shaped member telescoping the shank of the casting, a cup-shaped valve in said member slidably mounted on the inner end of said casting and adapted to close communication between the ends of said passages; and a gasket forming a slidable closed connection between the lower end of said cup and exterior of the shank; with a casing to which the casting is attached, a top box connected to said casing, a valve operating member in said box, and a connection between said valve operating member and said cup-member whereby the said cup-member may be raised or lowered on the stem to open or close the valve.
8. In combination, a casting having parallel inlet and outlet passages in its shank and inlet and outlet nipples communicating therewith at its lower end, a cup-shaped member slidably mounted on the inner end of said casting and telescoping the shank of the casting, a valve in said member adapted to close communication between the ends of said passages, and a gasket forming a slidable closed connection between the lower end of said cup and exterior of the shank; said shank having a third passage extending from a point outside of the cup to a point inside thereof when the cup is in its lowermost position to permit drainage from the cup when the valve is closed; with a casing to which the casting is attached, a top box connected to said casing, a valve operating member in said box, and a con11ection between said valve operating member and said cup-member whereby the said cupmember may be raised or lowered on the stem to open or close the valve.
