To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP D. PARsoNs, a citizen of the Uriited States, and resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Paper Towels for Toilet Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper towels foratively mounted upon the cabinet whereby exterior manipulation of the said blade causes the said folded part to be readily engaged and pushed through the discharge opening of the cabinet, where it, may be grasped and the towel withdrawn without objectionably disturbing the remainder of the towels within the cabinet;

More specifically, the folded towel sheet may be considered as having a main fold which forms a body part of multiple ply or thickness and which in turn has two opposite ends provided with folded parts one of which serves as a spacing element to obtain uniformity in the package, and the other provides the aforesaid folded part or means located in the ,pathof movement of the discharging blade or ejector.

With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will be more fully understood from the descriptionhereinafter the invention consists in the novel construction of paper towels as hereinafter more fully described and defined in the claims. Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a portion of the serving cabinet showing the adaptation of my improved paper towel thereto; Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the towel sheets folded and arranged in package form in accordance with my invention; Fig. 3 represents a similar elevation of a package of the sheets having a modified form -of fold; and Fig. 4 represents a perspective of a portion of one of the towel sheets, shown in Fig. 3..

1 designates a preferred type ofcabinet for use with the towels of my invention and has itslower part provided with a transverse slot 2 through which the towel tab or means to be engaged by the discharging blade 3 may be projected. The blade'3 may be of any desired form but as here shown it is pivoted and arranged to be reciprocated by the lever 4. The cabinet may also have the shelf or shoulder 5 at the side opposite the blade for supporting the package of towels at one side and'if desired the opposite side of the cabinet may be similarly provided with a support 6.

' Referring more particularly to the folded papertowels illustrated in Figs. 2 and-3, a

single towelis shown formed from a sheet of paper doubled or folded back upon itself to form a multi-ply body part 7. In connection with this multi-ply fold it should be understood that this is the preferred form as the sheets may be folded in accordance with my invention as a single sheet without the fold required'to give multiple thickness, and I do not Wish to be limited in this respect. One end of the body of the sheet is then folded at a suitable distance from its end to form a spacing element 8 which is bent back upon the body of the sheet and in normal .ing in. the direction of the opposite end of the sheet. This element is designed to maintain the-thickness of the the same and thereby provide a compact package when the successive folded sheets are positioned one above another in package form. The length of this spacing element 8 may be varied according to requirements and also be folded to either side'of the body part without departing from the present invention. In Fig. 2, I have illustrated the preferred form wherein the spacing element 8 is folded in such a -manner that it rests sheet substantially upon the top portion of the body of the sheet and it is therefore in such position that it contacts directly with the lower surface of the superposed sheet. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 this spacing element or tab 8 is folded below the body of the sheet so that it lies along the lower surface thereof' and consequently rests directly upon the body of the next lower sheet. 1

The opposite end of the sheet body is folded on a line as indicated at 9, parallel to the fold 10 of the spacing element 8 to provide a part 11 extending in a direction toward the spacing element end of the body and lying in substantial contact with the lower surface of the sheet body. This part 11, after extending a suitable distance to provide a width of required size, is again folded, reversely, at 12 on a line parallel to the fold 9, whereby the end or tab part 13 is directed toward the side of the cabinet and pointing in the same direction as the spacing elementor tab 8. By this arrangement it will be seen that the free edges 14: of the sheet terminate substantially against the walls of the cabinet and are held together between their juxtaposed sheets, or in case of the lowermost sheet between the supporting ledge and superposed sheets. The ends, therefore, are fixed in position and loose ends are consequently avoided. It will be noted, as each sheet becomes the lowermost one of the package, that the fold 12, or reversely bent tab of multi-ply form comprisingthe part 11 and a portion of the end 13, assumes a position in the path of movement of the discharge blade 3, and therefore as the latter is operated, either manually or mechanically, it will engage this tab portion 11, 13, and cause it to move with the blade toward and through the cabinet opening or slot 2 where it may be readilygrasped and the sheet removed for use. Since the fold 12 naturally forms a closed end of multiple thickness it forms a positive and durable means to be engaged by the discharge blade and insures free removal from the cabinet without crumpling, crushing or rumpling the sheet. Furthermore, it permits the lowermost sheet to be freely withdrawn without disturbing the remaining sheets of the package. I do not limit myself to the size of the sheets, whether single or multiply, or to the character of material comprlsing the sheets, as these may all be modified to suit the special requirements.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a paper towel consisting of a sheet folded near one end on a line parallel to the opposite end, to form a reversely bent tab of multiple thickness below the body portion of the sheet, said tab extending parallel to the body of the sheet and having one of its plies projecting beyond the fold line of the sheet body, and the opposite end of the sheet being folded on a line parallel to the body fold for said multi-ply tab and forming a spacing tab element pointing in the same direction as the aforesaid projecting end portion of the multi-ply tab.

2. A paper towel consisting of a sheet folded near one end on a line parallel to the opposite end, to form a reversely bent tab of multiple thickness below the body portion of the sheet, said tab extending parallel to the body of the sheet and having one of its plies projecting beyond the fold line of the sheet body and the opposite end of the sheet being folded on a line parallel to the body fold for said multi-ply tab and forming a spacing tab element pointing in the same direction as the aforesaid projecting end portion of the multi-ply tab, said spacing element lying parallel to the body portion of the sheet and contacting with the top surface thereof.

3. A paper towel consisting of a sheet folded on three parallel lines and providing two main tab portions pointing in the same direction parallel to the body of the sheet between said tab portions, and one of said tab portions having a reverse fold at its union with the body portion and providing a multiple fold secondary tab pointing in the opposite direction to the main tab portions.
