This invention relates to improvements in packing and shipping receptacles and more particularly to that class ofpacking and shipping receptacles known as barrels.

The primary object of this invention is the provision of a sectional packing and shipping receptacle or barrel for use in the transportation of fruits,- vegetables and their products, cement, flour, salt, and various other products of manufacture, to markets or consignees and one'which may be. easily opened for access to its contents and the latter removed-frorn either section thereof without disturbing the contents of the-other section.

Another object of this invention is to construct the sections of the improved barrel in such a manner that one section may be telescoped within another when they are emptied and thereby forming a compact and convenient form for returning to the original shipper, for reuse, or for transportation when empty and to provide one of these sections with means for preventing the spilling of the contents of the various sections when they are made ready for shipping. I

A still further object of this invention is to construct a barrel of the class above set forth, made of sheet metal, thereby preventing the egress of moisture into the same besides insuring the safe transportation of the products, relative to the breaking of the receptacle and against the loss of the products thereby occasioned.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

The improved shipping crate is preferably constructed of two sections 1 and 2, which sections are so shaped as to form half sections of a barrel commonly used in'the transportation of various products- Each of the sections 1 and 2 have their smaller ends closed by means of a head 3 or 4 and these heads are rigidly secured to the ends of the sections 1 and 2 by means of rivets or any suitable type of fastening means 5 and in such a manner as to form an air-tight connection between the heads and the sides of thesections. The upperor large end of V the section 2 has a hoop 6 securely mounted upon the outer surface thereof and passing annularly thereabout. 'The upper portion of the hoop 6 projects above the edge of the side of the section 2 and has thumb screws 7 mounted therein at various intervals.

Secured to the inner surface of the large end of the section 1 of the shipping crate is a member 8 which is preferably constructed of any desirable type of metal and is provided with an annular shoulder 9 which has the portion 10 extending downwardly therefrom. The member 8 is practically a hoop which engages the inner surface of the section 1 and the portion 10 thereof extends into the hollow portion of the section 2 of the shipping crate. Any suitable type of fabricv 11, such as burlap or the like is stretched across the opening in the portion 10 of the member 8 and the outer edge of the piece of fabric is folded upwardly so as to engage the outer surface of the portion 10 of the member 8 and is securely held thereupon by means of a metallic band 12. The side of the section 1 of the barrel is provided with a plurality of threaded apertures therethrough which are arranged in such a manner as to receive the shanks of the thumb screws? for securely holding the sections 1 and 2 together after the same have been filled.
