SHIPPING-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of. Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
Application filed March 13, 1913. Serial No. 754,044.
This invention relates to improvements in packing and shipping receptacles and more particularly to that class ofpacking and shipping receptacles known as barrels.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a sectional packing and shipping receptacle or barrel for use in the transportation of fruits,- vegetables and their products, cement, flour, salt, and various other products of manufacture, to markets or consignees and one'which may be. easily opened for access to its contents and the latter removed-frorn either section thereof without disturbing the contents of the-other section.
Another object of this invention is to construct the sections of the improved barrel in such a manner that one section may be telescoped within another when they are emptied and thereby forming a compact and convenient form for returning to the original shipper, for reuse, or for transportation when empty and to provide one of these sections with means for preventing the spilling of the contents of the various sections when they are made ready for shipping. I
A still further object of this invention is to construct a barrel of the class above set forth, made of sheet metal, thereby preventing the egress of moisture into the same besides insuring the safe transportation of the products, relative to the breaking of the receptacle and against the loss of the products thereby occasioned.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the inventionin-detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the improved barrel; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of connecting the two sections; and, Fig. 3 [S a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. v
The improved shipping crate is preferably constructed of two sections 1 and 2, which sections are so shaped as to form half sections of a barrel commonly used in'the transportation of various products- Each of the sections 1 and 2 have their smaller ends closed by means of a head 3 or 4 and these heads are rigidly secured to the ends of the sections 1 and 2 by means of rivets or any suitable type of fastening means 5 and in such a manner as to form an air-tight connection between the heads and the sides of thesections. The upperor large end of V the section 2 has a hoop 6 securely mounted upon the outer surface thereof and passing annularly thereabout. 'The upper portion of the hoop 6 projects above the edge of the side of the section 2 and has thumb screws 7 mounted therein at various intervals.
Secured to the inner surface of the large end of the section 1 of the shipping crate is a member 8 which is preferably constructed of any desirable type of metal and is provided with an annular shoulder 9 which has the portion 10 extending downwardly therefrom. The member 8 is practically a hoop which engages the inner surface of the section 1 and the portion 10 thereof extends into the hollow portion of the section 2 of the shipping crate. Any suitable type of fabricv 11, such as burlap or the like is stretched across the opening in the portion 10 of the member 8 and the outer edge of the piece of fabric is folded upwardly so as to engage the outer surface of the portion 10 of the member 8 and is securely held thereupon by means of a metallic band 12. The side of the section 1 of the barrel is provided with a plurality of threaded apertures therethrough which are arranged in such a manner as to receive the shanks of the thumb screws? for securely holding the sections 1 and 2 together after the same have been filled.
In the use of a shipping crate of this type the fabric 11 is removed from off the portion 10 of the member 8 and the section is filled with the product which is to be shipped, the fabric is then stretched across the opening in the member 8 and the ring 12 forced about the latter thereby holding the fabric in place and forming a closure, whereby 7 be shipped, the section 1 is, by any suitable, manner or means, placedjupon the section 2- in a position as is clearly'shown in 'Figal' the contents of the section 1' will be prevented from spilling when the same is placed uponthe section 2.
hasbeen filled with the product which 'is to of the drawings or in such a manner that the enlarged ends of the two sections 1 and '2- will coincide and the hoop .6 will be disposed about the outersurface of the two 7' 1 sections at their point of connection. -The thumb screws? arethen screwed inwardly 1 so that'the'shanks thereof will engage the threaded apertures invthe section 1; This forms a means for holding the sections land 1 Qtgjgether when they are tobe shipped. Y
g In practical fields certain minorfeatures of construction, combination and arrangement o1 parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee isentitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is V '1. A. shipping i receptacle, including an upper and a lower section, a hoop mounted upon and carriedby the said lower section and passing annularly thereabout said'hoop having openings therein adj acent'the upper V V marginalcdge thereof,- and thumb screws After the section 2 of the shipping crate mounted in said openings for, engagement with the said'upper section, and a partition ing element carried by the uppersection and disposed slightly below the upper marginal 2. A shipping receptacle includingzanuo' 7 per and-alow-er section, an annulari' fl'ange secured to the inner surface of said upper section adjacent the lower end thereof, said flange havinganannularshoulder p portion extending; downwardly fro mlsaid shoulder) and spaced from; the lowermargij i nalcedge of the said upperv s e ctiomJ-and a ringengageable about said downwardly ex- 7 r tending portion whereby to secure a fabric 1 cover over said: section, said fabric serving 7 as a means to prevent the contents of said w 50':
