Specification of Letters Patent. Patented O t, 12, 1915 Application filed September 19, 1914, Serial No. 862,484.
To all 'w/wmz't may concern: 7 A
Be it known that I, TrrouAs Fon'rnivor a citizen of the United States, residing at Ged, Calcasieu parish, and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Well Rigs ofwhich the following is a specification.
The present invention relates broadly to an oil well rig, and more particularly to that-type of 'ri'g capable of performing the combined operations ofdrilling, pumping, and hoisting.
:This invention has for its principal object improvementsin oil well rigs, and particularly to means for connecting a single driver to either a" spudding'or hoisting mechanism. i
A further object of this invention is, to provide in an oil well rig'of this nature a novel means for varyingthe speed of the hoisting drum. 7
A still further object is to provide a variable speed gearing for the operation of the apparatus, in which the changingof the speed can-be accomplished substantially without clashing, and in which shocks in cident to the change, acceleration or diminution of the speed of'the driven shaft, are.
kept at a minimum. I, p
Other and further objects'of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part be pointed out in the specification here: inafter following; in which'like characters are used to represent like parts throughout the several views thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the oil well rig. Fig. 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, With one of the standards removed. Fig. 8-.is' an enlarged'detail View of one of the clutches employed.
With devices of this nature now in use it is customary to provide separate attachments for both the pumping and drilling operations. Such a construction necessitates a large number of parts, and necessarily requires a great deal of adjusting and shifting of the driving connections for these parts. By the present invention the applicant obviates all of these objections, and provides a compact rig which effectually performs all of these operations.
Referring now to the drawings, the improved rig comprises a pair of side stand-- ards 1 and 2, between which is rigidly secured a base block 4. Extending trans versely. of the base block, and across the tops of the standards adjacent the ends thereof are braces 5 and 6. The-brace 5 is provided on one sidewith an extension? A main drive shaft 8, mounted in suitable bearings 9 on each of the standards, extends transversely of the frame. Splined, or otherwise secured upon the shaft 8, is a main drive sprocket 10 having a sprocket chain" 11 connected with any suitable source of power (not here shown).
For connecting the driving mechanism w1th the spudding or pumping apparatus,
there is provided a gear wheel 12, which 1s loosely mounted on the shaft 8 and adapted to rotate freely thereon. A complemental gear wheel 14 keyed upon the countershaft 15 is in alinement and constantly in mesh with the gear 12. Suitable bearings 16 upon the standard 2 and the extension 7 are provided for the counter shaft; On the inner end of the counter shaft there is secured a bevel gear 17 of relatively small diameter,
which transmits-power to the'pumping'or drilling shaft18. This shaft extends longitudinally of the frame and is carried in bearings 19 secured to each of the cross braces,5 and 6. In operative connection "with the bevel gear 17 is alarge bevel gear 19.fixed, to one end of the' shaft 18. On the opposite end .of this shaft is a Wheel or arm 20 having a crank pin 21 eccentrically carried thereby. The pin 21 is pro-' vided for attachment to the pitmanj22 of the pump. It is obvious that'when the apparatus is tobe used for drilling that a fiexi ble link or'its equivalent may be substituted for the pitman. i
In order; to operate the shaft 18 and its associate parts from the main drive shaft,
a clutch 24 is slidably splined to the drive shaft. This clutch is provided with ,en-
With devices of this nature it is frequently desirable to suspend the pumping 0r drilling operation, in order to'remove broken tools or foreign substances from the well. It is in thisconnection that the clutch ,the shaft 35.
24 plays its most important part. This means for removing any desired object from the well is here shown as comprising a derrick located at one end of the oil well rig frame, having the usual sheave 31 for the cable One end of the cable 32 passes around a bull wheel or drum 34 secured upon the shaft 35. Suitable bearings 36 are located upon the standards for receiving the ends of the shaft. For driving the bull wheel there may be provided a line shaft 37 above the drum shaft, and extending parallel therewith, and having bearings 38. A sprocket wheel 39 secured to the shaft, is driven by a chain 40 from .the driving sprocket 41 loosely mounted upon the main drive shaft. The sprocket 41 has an engaging member 42 upon one face for engagement with the projections of the clutch 24. r
As it is frequently desirable and necessary to drive the bull wheel at varying speeds, a change speed mechanism is provided upon the shaft 35. This comprises a large sprocket Wheel 45, and a smaller wheel 46 spaced a suitable distance therefrom, both of the sprockets being loosely carried upon The adjacent faces of the wheels 45 and 46 are provided with clutch suitable lever 50. The clutch 49 is identical with that shown in Fig. 3, and will not be fully described at this point. .Rigidly secured to the line shaft 37 is a pair of sprockets 51 and 52 in alinement respectively with the sprockets 45 and'46, and having respective driving connections 54 and 55 with the drum shaft. By this arrangement it is pos sible to readily shiftfrom one speed to another without touching the main clutch mounted on the drive shaft.
For lowering any desired material into the well it is necessary to employ a suitable brake for controlling the speed of the bull wheel and preventing damage to the rig due to racing. A desirable brake for use in this connection is shown as comprising a lever 56 pivotally carried by a bracket 57.
A. flexible steel brake shoe passes around the brake drum 58 which is secured to one head of the bull wheel. By moving the lever outwardly it is apparent that the friction between the shoe and the brake drum will be increased, thereby providing means for easily regulating the run of the cable.
For allowing the bull wheel to rotate freely, I have shown the base block terminating at a point considerably at one side thereof.
While I have shown and described the most desirable form of my invention, it is apparentthat changes in the details thereof may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention.
Having thus described my invention What I desire to claim is:
1. A combined hoisting and spudding apparatus comprising a pair of .side members, a main drive shaft extending transversely between said members, a drilling shaft extending longitudinally of said side members, a counter shaft provided with means for operating said drilling shaft from the drive shaft, a hoisting mechanism, and means for operatively connecting either said hoisting mechanism or said drilling shaft to the main drive shaft.
2. A combined hoisting and spudding apparatus comprising a pair of side members, a main drive shaft extending transversely between "said members at one end thereof, a drilling shaft extending longitudinally of said side members, a counter shaft above said drive shaft provided with means for operating said drilling shaft from the drive shaft, a hoisting mechanism at the opposite end of said members, means for operatively connecting either said hoisting mechanism or said drilling shaft to the main drive shaft, and a variable speed transmission ole vice for controlling the speed of the hois ing mechanism.
a In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name.
THOMAS FONTENOT.
