Description
GEGRGE H. VOLLHRDT.
Improvement in Folding-Stps for Carriages.
N0, 5,664, Patentersdjune 6,1`8A71.
PATENT @Teton GECRGE H. V OLLARDTOF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
EMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-'STEPS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,664, dated une 6, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE HVOLLHARDT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a' new Improvement in Folding-Step for Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure l, a front View; and in Fig. 2, a vertical central section.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of steps for carriages in which the two steps are combined, so that the folding of one operates to fold the other; and it consists in the arrangement of two steps hinged or pivoted in the frame, combined with a vertical jointed post between the two, so that when the steps are open the post is nearly vertical beneath the upper step, and the turning up of the lower step turns down the upper step in advance, so that the lower step covers the upper.
A is the freine, of the usual form 5 B, the lower step, pivoted to the frame at a, so that when turned up, as in Fig. 1, it closes the frame in the usual manner. C is the upper step, pivoted to the frame at d, so as to fold downward, as denoted in broken lines.` D is one part of apost pivoted to the upper step at f; E, the other part of the post rigidly,T ixed to the lower step, and the two parts jointed together as at b, with a shoulder, t', in the rear, to arrest the post when the two ports are brought into line, as in Fig. 2, the post in this position serving as a support for the upper step.
To close the steps, the lower step is raised, which throws the joint back, drawing down the upper step'in advance of the rising of the lower step, so that when the lower step is fully closed, the upper step and jointed post are closed in behind the lower step, as denotedin broken lines, Fig.2. To open the step, reverse the operation.
I claim as my invention- The two steps B C pivoted in the frame, in the manner described, and combined with the jointed post D E, so as to operate as and for the purpose specified.
- GEORGE H. VOLLHARDT.
