Be it known that I, RANDALL N. SAUNDERS, a `citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hudson, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar-Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention has special reference to improvements in buttons and more particularly to those used in connection with apparel, such as collar buttons.

Primarily, the invention resides in a novel collar button for application to the front of a shirt band to facilitate the buttoning of the collar by providing an extension of the collar button which lengthens the latter temporarily and permits the `operator to have something to grasp with one hand to hold the button in place, while the other hand is free to slide the collar or other clothing to be closed, over the head of vthe button, said extension being afterward hidden from View.

With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the peculiar combinationV and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a device which is. simple in construction, durable and efficient. i A y l Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the views and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view' ony the line '2-2-of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the' button showing the extensible portion thereof projected; and Fig. 4 is a similar view with the extensible portion inclosed in the button shank.

The usual collar buttons or other buttons used with apparel, by reason of having the shank of permanent length, are objectionable on account of the trouble caused in buttoning the ends of the collar or sliding the end of the collar which is last buttoned, or other clothing to be closed, over the head of the button, this being particularly due to the fact'that the end of the collar or other apparel will not reach over the head unless considerable pull is exerted thereon. nate trouble in buttoning by providing a button having an extension portion which temporarily lengthens the button and permits the operator to have something to grasp with one hand and hold the button in place while the other hand is free to slide the collar,.or other clothing to be closed, over the head of the button. When the desired result has been attained the extension portion is slipped back into the shaft or shank of the button out of the way or held by friction or by the necktie in case of a collar button. y

lVith these ends in view a button is provided in the form of a shell having-ahead 10, preferably of rounding form, and aureduced shank l1 shaped to provide a base 12 which is closed by a plate 13 which may be clamped or bent o-ver the edge of the base pirt integrally with the shank, as shown at opening 15 located axially thereof and with respect to the shank so as to receive an extensio-n portion ltherethrough. This part comprises a reduced shank having a tapering head 17 and an enlargement or base 18` of flat ended or cylindrical construction. Before the application of the plate 13 the extension portion is applied to the button by passing the reduced shank thereof through the tubular shank, shaft or stem 11 of the butto-n proper, the head 17 to project slightly through the aperture 15 in the head of the button and to ybe formed of the material of the reduced shank oratt'ached to the reduced shank after said reduced shank has been passed through the said aperture 15 in the head of the button at the outer wall of the latter, as shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings, the extension portion being then held from displacement by thepla'te 13 after the latter is applied. The enlargement 18 is snugly accommodated within the shank 11, and being larger than the opening 15 is held from displacement therethrough while the shank 16 can move in angular relation to the button proper.

Normally, the position of the button is such as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, but when it is desired to apply or use Vthe same to connect parts of clothing, such as the extremities of a collar 19, as shown in Fig. 1

of the drawings, in order to apply or connect the same to the collar band of a shirt 20, the back of the collar is first fastened. The extension portion of the button is then drawn outward as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, before or after one end of the collar is passed o-ver the head 10 of the button and on to the shank 11 thereor", but when the other end is applied the button is lengthened temporarily and by disposing said extension portion in the angular position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings the head 17 will be disposed toward the end to be buttoned or closed ove" the head of the button and will be braced in this position by the contact of the lateral wall of the enlargement 18 with the head as shown at 21 and the shank 1G in aperture 15, as shown at 21, and also by contact of the inner end of the enlargement with a diametrically opposite point of the angular bend or juncture of the head and shank, as shown at 22. lVhen placed in this position tlvoperator may grasp the extension portion with one hand and hold the button in place, while the other hand is free to slide the collar or other clothing end over the head 17, the shank 16 and subsequently over the head 10 andon to the shank 11 of the button proper. lV hen this is accomplished the eX- tensien portion is slipped back into the shank or shaft of the button, as shown in Fig. 4, so that only the head 17 will project, the extension being out of the way and held by friction of the enlargement against the interior wall of the shank and by the necktie in the case of a collar button.

l/Vhile the button is shown and described for use as a collar button, it will be obvious that it may be used for various other purposes where the ends or flaps of the garment or the like to be fastened are to be closed over the head of the button, and especially where considerable strain is necessary to accomplish this.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A button of the class described, comprising a button proper having a base, a

tubular shank, and a hollow head, the head having a central opening of less diameter than the bore of the shank, and an extensible member having a shank of less diameter than the opening` of the head and extending through the same and provided at its outer end with a head and at its inner end with a base tting snugly in the tubular shank.

2. A button of the class described, comprising a button proper including a hollow head, a tubular shank reduced with respect thereto and an enlarged base, and an extensible portion including a tapering head having a reduced shank portion and a cylindrical base enlargement, said hollow head having an aperture axially therethrough through which the reduced shank of the extensible portion is movable to be extended or inclosed or collapsed with respect to the iirst named head and shank, said enlargement preventing displacement of the extensible portion through the aperture and snugly fitting the iirst named shank.

3. A button of the class described, comprising' a button properincluding a hollow head, a shank reduced with respect thereto and an enlarged base, and an extensible portion including a head having a reduced shank portion and a base-forming enlargement, said hollow head having an aperture axially therethrough through which the reduced shank of the extensible portion is movable to be extended or inclosed or collapsed with respect to the first named head and shank, said shank being adapted for angular movement in the aperture with the enlargement braced against the head and shank on the inside.
