To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we,

\VILLIA M 'YA'rcnnR and CHARLES H. MELCHER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Los Angeles. in the county of Los Angeles and State of California. and of Douglas, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Our invention refers to headgear and has forits object to provide a simple, economical and ornamental cap, adjustable as to size, the adjustable feature being so constructed and arranged as to present an ornamental finishing bow in connection with the band at the back of the cap.

tion consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts asset forth hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cap embodying the features of our invention looking from the rear; Fig. 2, a fragmentary sectional view of the same through the band portion of said cap; Fig. 3, a fragmentary inner face view with parts broken away showing the manner of attaching the free end of one of the band elements to an apron portion of the cap crown; Fig. 4, a detailed crosssection of the same, the section being indicated by line M of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5, another detailed cross-section through the apron extension of the crown body.

Referring by characters to the drawings, 1 represents the crown or body of the cap having a lining 2, the rough unfinished edges of which crown and lining are concealed and stitched between the edges of a facing strip 3 and a finishing strip 3 of band sections B, B, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.

At the back of the cap the crown and its lining are extended to form an apron 4, which apron is detached from the band sections throughout its length, but is secured to said band sections at its ends by stitching 4". From the points of the stitching 4 the band. sections comprising the'facing and finishing strip are extended to form overlapping free end straps 5. These end straps, as shown, are each arranged to be passed through the companion bars A, A, of a retaining buckle having bails C, C, in pivotal unionwitli said bars. The bar members of the buckle, as shown, are secured to the outer face of the apron 4 and centrally thereof, being in alinement with the straps 5, as shown.

From the foregoing description it is apparent that the straps, after being threaded through their respective buckle bars A, A,

may, as shown in Fig. 1, be folded back' upon themselves in opposite directions and confined by the bails to thus form an ornamental bow at the back of the cap. It is also manifest that the free ends of the band which constitutes the straps 5, 5, may be adjusted about the buckle to contract the band of the cap as to size or expand the same by simple manipulation of the bow, it being understood that when the cap is contracted with relation to its maximum size, the apron will form loops or folds which will in no way detract from the fit of the cap nor will these folds be apparent to the wearer due to the fact thatthe apron is of soft pliable'material.

We claim:

1. An adjustable cap comprising band sections having overlapping rear ends constituting straps, each band section being secured to the lower edge of the body of the cap from front to rear, at which point they are spaced apart a predetermined distance whereby the strap ends constituting part of the bands are free, a rear apron section extending downwardly from the body of the cap to a point alined with the outer edges of the-band sections and between the freeends of said bands, the said apron being backwardly folded free ends of the strapportions of said band.
