IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR FUMINATING PHOTOGRAPHIC PAPER, Stc- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,554, dated May 30, 1871.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J osEPH L. WINNER, of Elizabeth Uity,in the county ofP-asquotank and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fuminating Photograph-Paper and for Drying and Evaporating Baths; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, with side door and top lid thrown open. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of lower part.

My invention relates to an improvement in fuminating photograph-1iaper and for drying and evaporating baths; and consists ofa closed box, of any desired shape, provided with legs, and having a side and a top lid which can be opened or shut at will, the box having a lamp or gasburner situated directly underneath it and fastened to the back of the box. It also consists of a double top to the box, the inside one of which is perforated with a series of small holes so as to allow the vapor to escape while drying. In the bottom of the box there is an opening, say about six inches in diameter, directly over the lamp, and lined with sheetiron or other suitable metal, and is covered over the top with a thin iron lid that may be raised or removed, as may be desired.

D is the lamp, situated under the box or case, and secured to the back. E is the opening through the bottom of the box or case directly over the lamp, and is lined with sheet-iron or other suitable material or metal, and covered with a thin plate of iron, 0. F is the inner top of the box, perforated with a series of suitable openings for the escape of the vapor.

In carrying out my invention the photograph'paper is silvered and hung up on suitable pins, of which any desired number may be used, and which are arranged upon the in side of the box or case. The fume is then placed on the plate in the bottom of the box, the lamp lighted, and the lids are all closed so as to admit no ray of light and to prevent the vapor from escaping. In about five or ten minutes the paper is fumed and the upper lid of the box is opened; the lower sheet-iron is withdrawn, thus allowing a circulation of air between the bottom and the top of the case to carry 0d the excess fume. The paper can then be removed or left in the box, as may be desired.

If desired, the box can now be used as an oven for drying plates, negatives, &c., which are thereby excluded from all dust and dirt, and are heated warm enough for varnishing, thus saving the labor of one man drying plates and varnishing.

Another advantage is that the operator can evaporate his baths and warm his chemicals to the right temperature either in hot or cold weather.

The great advantage of this invention is the small cost of material in heating, and the saving of labor in drying, &c., as above described, which does not exceed over seven cents per day.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A single case, adapted to be used either for fuminating photographed paper, drying negatives or plates, or for evaporating-baths.

2. The box A, provided with a top lid, B, and side door 0, with lamp D, situated under the box, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.

3. The perforated inner top F of the box A for the escape of the vapor, and the lower lid of sheet-iron c and pins 0 e to hang the paper while fuming, arranged substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
