FOUNTAIN GLUE-SPREADER.

specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 5., 1915.
Application filed August 4, 1914. Serial No. 855,004.
I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anvil) JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Bend, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Fountain Glue-Spreader, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a spreader, adapted to be employed in applying glue and the like, the device being of the fountain type, so that the glue or other substance is delivered to the applyingelement of the spreader.
The invention aims to provide a novel form of glue spreader comprising telescoping parts having relative movement to ex pel the glue or other substance through a nozzle upon one of said parts and to discharge the glue or other substance against the brush.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type above indicated including a novel brush holding means and novel means for directing the glue or other substance onto the brush.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the present invention, there is provided a primary or outer tube 1 equipped at its sides and adjacent its upper end with laterally extending ring-like finger grips 2. At its lower end, the outer tube 1 is provided with a laterally extended spout 3. j
-Projecting downwardly from the lower end of the outer tube 1 is a trough-like extension 4, the side walls 5 of which are slit transversely as indicated at 6, to form clamping jaws 7 and to form guards 8 located below the clamping jaws.
Inserted into the extension 4 and held by the jaws 7 is a brush 9 which lies between the guards 8. A thumb screw 10 or other clamping element may unite the jaws 7 to cause a proper cooperation between the jaws and the brush 9, to the end that the brush may be held in place and adjusted.
As clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the nozzle or spout 3 discharges between the guards 8 and on the brush 9.
A piston structure for the outer tube 1 is provided, this piston structure preferably taking the form of an inner or secondary tube 11, mounted to slide within the tube 1. The inner tube 11 includes a top 12 provided with a ring-like thumb grip 14.
. In practical operation, the thumb of'the operator is placed through the ring 14, the first and third fingers of the hand being inserted through the rings 2 and the second finger 01' the operator resting against the side of the tube 1. Then, by the action of the thumb, the secondary or piston tube 11 may be forced inwardly, expelling the glue or other substance through the spout 3, the contents of the tube 1 being discharged between the guards 8 and onto the brush 9.
A plurality of brushes 9 of difierent sizes may be provided, and one brush may be replaced by another readily, when the thumb screw 10 is operated to loosen the clamping jaws 7.
The brushes 9 may be fashioned from fine copper bristles, from animal bristles, from basswood or from any other suitable substance.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A glue spreader comprising a primary tube equipped at one end with a troughshaped extension, the side walls of which are slit transversely to form guards and to form jaws located above the guards; and a brush in the extension and engaged by the jaws; the tube being provided with a laterally extended nozzle which discharges between the guards.
2. A glue spreader comprising a tube equipped at one end with a trough shaped extension, the side walls of which constitute guards and are provided with jaws located above the guards; and a brush in the extension and engaged by the jaws; the tube being provided with a laterally extended nozzle which discharges between the guards.
3. A glue spreader comprising a primary tube equipped at one end with a troughshaped extension, the side walls of which are slit transversely to form guards and to form jaws located above the guards; a brush in the extension and engaged with the jaws; and a clamping device connecting the jaws; the tube being provided with a laterally ex- 5 tended nozzle which discharges between the guards.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ARVID JOHNSON.
