OVELIA M. GOODE, OF SOUTH BEND, TEXAS.
' FENDER.
Application filed June 9, 1915.
State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains .to make and use the same. I
'This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fenders and more particularly to that class of fender designated for use on street cars, motor cars and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a fender which will effectively protect. a person from being struck and injured by a street car.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fender which will prevent anypossibility of the person Who has been struck from falling beneath the wheels of the car.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a fender having a guard rail around the forward end which is operated by the weight of the person or object falling on the fender.
A still further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a fender which is well padded so that a person falling there on will be uninjured.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a car fender constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the same complete and ready for operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fender showing the pad ding removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sec tional view through the fender showing the same with the guard rail in its raised position. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view of a modified form of operating mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a still further modification of the operating mechanism.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally the main platform of the fender comprising a frame, which is preferably'of bar iron or the like, having secured to the upper side thereof the sheet metal pad or Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1915.
Serial No. 33,094.
Pivotally mounted near each end of the bar 6 are the loops 7 carried .on the free ends of the arms 8 of the U-shaped member, designated generally by the'numeral 9. This U-shaped member is of a size substantially equal to the size of the platform 1 and is formed of a continuous bar of iron which is relatively heavy so as to normally tend to lie against the platform., A. suitable U- shaped frame 10 is provided and comprises the bight portion 11 having formed thereon the arms 12, the free ends of which are formed with loops which in turn are pivoted to the bar 6 as clearly shown. Cooper-v ating with the frame 10 is a frame 18 which is U-shaped and the free ends of the arms of the frame 13 are formed with loops 14: through which passes the bight portion 11 of the U-shaped frame 10.- The frames 10 and 13 are formed of a relatively light material and connected to each arm 12 of the frame 10 intermediate their ends is a suitable chain or flexible connection 15, the upper end of which is connected to the wheel l. Connected at a point on the wheel 1 diametrically opposite the point of connection with the chain 15 is a suitable chain or flexible member 16, the lower end of which is connected intermediate the ends of each arm of the frame 9. It will thus be seen that relative movement of either the frame 9 or the frame 10 will move the opposite frame.
In order to prevent a person falling on the fender from being injured, there is pro vided a suitable pad designated generally by the numeral 17 consisting of a suitable wire spring 18 and mattress 19 which is covered with a suitable water proof material 20. A similar water proof material 21 is secured to the forward portion of the frame 9 and extends partially 'up the arms thereof and this material also is secured to the frame of the platform 1 around the forward end thereof. It will thus be seen that when the frame 9 is raised, a suitable guard is provided which will prevent a person or article on the fender from rolling oil and becoming entangled in the wheels'of the vehicle.
In the modified form of the device illus-- the upper end of each of the standards a suitable pulley wheel over which the flexible members pass. It will thus be seen that when either of the frames 9 or 10 descends the opposite frame will be raised.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that in use should a person fall uponithe fender, he will land on the padding 17 and cause the bar 11 of the frame 10 to descend, thereby exerting downward pull on the flexible members 15 thereby exerting upward pull on the flexible member 16 and causing the frame 9 to move upwardly. It will thus be seen that the flexible water proof material 21 will prevent the person or object from rolling off the fender and becoming entangled in the wheels of the car, thereby avoiding any possibility of injury. Due to the fact that the padding 17 is provided, it will be evident that the fall or impact of the person on the fender will be broken, thereby preventing any possibility whatever of injury from the use of this fender.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for While in the foregoing there "has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the com .bination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the ap pended claims.
What is claimed is:
1; A fender comprising a platform, a U:
shaped guard frame pivoted to one end ofi the platform and extending to-the opposite end thereof, a' U-shaped operating frame pivoted to the pivot of the U-shaped'guard frame, a U-shaped frame pivoted. to the r bight portion of the operating frame and 7 means connecting the operating frame with the guard frame whereby upon precipitation of an object on to the platform the guard frame will be thrown into active position.
2. A fender comprising a platform, a U- shaped guard frame pivoted to one'end of the platform, and extending to theopposite end thereof, a U-shaped operating frame pivoted to the pivot of the U-shaped frame, a U-shaped frame pivoted to the bight portion of the operating frame, standards extending upwardly from" the sides of the platform, a wheel rotatable on the standard and means connecting the frame to the wheel at diametrically opposite points whereby 7 upon precipitation of an object on the plat form, the guard frame will be thrown into active position.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
