Be it known that I, HARVEY P. LovEJoY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Gatos, Santa Clara county, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Kites, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in kites which embody features designed to render said kite useful and valuable as an article of amusement as well as for commercial purposes.

The object of the inventionis to provide a kite, having means to fold its ribs into a compact and small bundle which adapts the kite to be conveniently carried in the pocket.

Another object is to provide a kite having a central body member from which the ribs will radiate; said central body member having its one half hinged to its other half and pivotally carrying said radiating ribs.

With these and other objects in view the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and combination of parts, an example of which is described in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view of the assembled kite frame, the tying cord and covering forming no part of the invention, is not herein shown. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of a modified form of one of the kite ribs.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein the same reference characters designate the same parts throughout the several views, the numerals 1 and 2 respectively designate two hinged members. The adjacent portions of each member is turned in the form of an eye 3 and pivoted upon the hinge pin 4.

The numerals 5 and 6 respectively designate a pair of oppositely disposed body members which are similar in form to the pair previously mentioned. The member 6 has one extremity outwardly turned, as indicated, in the form of a bracket 7 The member 5 has its extremity, adjacent to the member 6, formed into a catch member 8 adapted to engage the bracket 7 and securely engage same.

Ribs 9 and 10 are carried between the associated halves of the hinged body members and fixed thereto by pins or rivets 11. Similar ribs, but preferably shorter in length, 12 and 13, are pivotally carried, as indicated by the numeral 15, between the members 1 and 5; likewise ribs 16 and 17 are carried between the members 1 and 2 and upon the pivot pins 18.

It is readily seen how the several pivoted ribs may be swung alongside the fixed ribs 9 and 10 when the catch member 8 is lifted from its engagement with the associated member 7 thereby permitting the kite frame to be folded at its central portion thus bringing the radial points of the kite together and relieving the tension of the string and cow ering, (hereinafter described) and permitting the pivoted ribs to be swung and lie parallel with the fixed ribs 9 and 10 in compact form.

Fig. 3 illustrates a rib 19 provided with a slotted extremity 20 which may be slipped upon the pin 21 carried by the central frame.

v Such a construction allows the ribs to be removed from the central frame if desired. The extremities of the ribs will carry, securely fastened thereto, and be bound by a lightwire or cord which also furnishes a means for retaining the kite covering on the frame, the said covering will preferably be of light. tough and pliant paper or cloth to permit its being folded with the ribs without breaking or tearing. The well known method of attaching cord and tail is used in flying this kite. It is to be understood that the ribs or stays may be made of any suitable material such as wood or metal.

The invention is presented as including all such modifications and changes as may properly come within the scope of the following claims.
