UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. HATHAW-AY, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ILLINOIS WATCH CASE COMPANY, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR WRIST-WATCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1915.
Application filed January 30, 1915. Serial No. 5,283.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. HATHA- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hist-Watches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an attachment more particularly intended and adapted for use in connection with wrist watches, and for the purpose of serving as a means for connecting one end of the bracelet or strap used in conjunction with these watches to the body of the watch.
The objects of the invention are to provide an attachment of the character described, in the form of a ring post which, in conjunction with the ordinary pendant construction, will allow of a turning movement of the watch about its longitudinal center so as to permit of the exposure of either the face or back of the watch as may be desired; to provide a guard or shield arranged in proper relation to the ring post to prevent it from becoming broken, bent, or injured by accidentally striking against some extraneous surface; to so construct the ring post as to permit of its connection to the watch body without the use of screws, nuts, or similar devices which might become loose in use and permit a disconnection: and to provide an attachment considered as a whole which is economical and simple of construc tion and easy of application to the watch body, and ornamental or finished in appearance.
The invention further consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation showing a watch equipped with the attachment of the present invention and the bracelet or strap connected to the watch; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section oi one end of the watch showing the ring post of the present invention in place; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the ring post of the present invention prior to its application to the watch body; and Fig. i is a detail in perspective of the guard or shield member as initially constructed and prior to 1ts application to the watch body.
Referring now to the drawings, the attachment which, as a whole, consists of the variety, although, of course, this is not to be deemed a limitation or restriction upon the scope of the present invention. The attachment itself comprises a ring post 3 chambered or recessed at its inner end for a short distance inward, as shown at 9, and the stem 8 of the post has secured thereto or formed integral therewith a ring 10. The post is of a size to permit it to have a turning or pivotal fit within a hole or opening 11 in the body of the watch, and after being placed in position, the inner end of the post is upset or flanged as indicated by the numeral 12, by means of any desired or suitable tool. When this has been done, the post will be securely attached to the body of the watch in a firm and efiicient manner. The post thus made and attached has no threaded parts or nuts for holding it in place, thus eliminating any danger of its becoming disconnected by loosening of the threaded parts or nuts. When attached in the manner described, the post will have a free turning movement in the body of the watch. The end 13 of the bracelet or chain is attached to the ring 10 by a spring snap or any suitable means, and when both ends of the bracelet chain or strap are attached, as in Fig. 1, the bracelet will be attached at one end to the pendant 6 which has the usual pivotal movement, and at its other end to the ring 10, the stem 8 of which also has a pivotal movement; and these points of attachment being diametrically opposite one another the body of the watch is permitted a free turning movement about its longitudinal center, whereby the face or back of the watch can be exposed as desired.
I provide a guard or shield member 14: which, when attached in position, acts as a protector for the ring post to prevent it from being struck against some extraneous surface, and thereby bent, broken, or injured. It also serves as a means for ornamenting or giving a finished appearance to that side of the watch body to which it is attached, whereby, if desired, the watch may be used as a chatelain or belt type watch in place of the wrist type.
For the purpose of simplifying the manufacture, as well as securing economy in the process and facility in the attachment of the guards or shields to the watch, I initially form the protecting member H of a single piece, by striking or cutting the same out of metal sheet, or other source of raw supply. The member is brazed or otherwise attached to the body of the watch along the surfaces 15 in its initial or integral condition. After being so attached, the central portion 16 is cut out as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. A hole is then drilled through the watch case to the interior, and the ring post inserted in place and its inner end spread or upset as already explained. It Will be obvious that, if the edge of the watch be rubbed against some surface, moving toward the ring post from either side, the guards-or shields at the one side or the other will shunt or deflect such surface away from the post, so that it will not be broken, bent, or injured. Y
I claim:
1. In combination with a watch body of the character described, an attachment comprising a stem having a recess in one end extending partially the length thereof, a flange formed at the extremity of said recessed end, a ring at the opposite end of said attachment, and guard members attached to the watch body and arranged at each side of the ring, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a watch case, a shield, guard or protecting piece comprising a single piece of metal arranged with companion or complementary end portions positively secured directly to the curved outer periphery of the watch case, and a central portion raised as to its outer surface, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a watch case, a shield, guard or protecting piece comprising a single piece of metal arranged with companion or complementary end portions positively secured directly to the curved outer periphery of the watch case, and a central portion of concavo-convex formation, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a watch case, an attachment composed of a single piece of metal arranged with companion or complementary end portions positively secured directly to the periphery of a watch case, a central portion and the inner face of the central portion being raised with respect to the inner faces of the end portions whereby said central portion is out of contact with the periphery of the watch case when the attachment is secured thereto, substantially as described.
THOMAS F. HATHAWAY.
