To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PETER Bononnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction-Roll Coverings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- This invention relates specifically to the covering for a suction roll for paper making machines, and consists of coarse knit sleeves, preferably knit from wool worsted yarn and adapted to be stretched over the suction roll.

An object of the invention is to provide coverings that will allow the moisture in the pulp to be readily drawn through the said coverings and which coverings will not become stid and non-porous from use.

Another object of the invention is to provide coverings that are cheap, durable and easily mounted upon the roll.

The coverings now in common use for suction rolls are made of felt and because of the compactedness of the felt,.the pores soon become filled up, leaving the covering and non-porous which prevents the moisture in the pulp from passing therethrough and as a result the sheet of pulp will pass off in a still wet state. .By the use of my improved coverings, these objectional features are obviated, the moisture in the pulp is readily drawn 01f through the coverings into the interior of the roll, because of the looseness of the knit the pores in the sleeve will not fill up and become stiff from use. p

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a suction roll, showing the coverings thereon. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the roll showing one covering thereon. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the roll showing two coverings thereon.

By referring to the drawings, 1 designates a suction roll, having its periphery perforated in the usual manner, the interior of the roll is connected to the usual means for causing a suction.

I prefer to place two of'the said sleeves upon the roll as shown one over the other in Fig. 3, which provides a soft porous covering through which the moisture in the pulp may easily be drawn. 7

The suction roll with its covering is usually placed immediately above a pulp gathering cylinder, which cylinder is adapted to take a coat of wet pulp upon its surface, and as the. cylinder revolves, the wet pulp comes in contact with a felt belt which is adapted to pass around the covering on the suction roll. The water in the pulp will be forced through the felt belt and come in contact with the knit sleeve 2 and by suitable suction means connected with the interior of the suction roll 1 the water will be readily drawn through the sleeves 2 to the interior of the roll 1 where it may be drained off. The sheet of'pulp thus dried will adhere to the felt belt and travel on its surface to some proper destination.

When it becomes necessary to renew the worn coverings upon the suction roll, the outer covering may replace the lower one, .a new covering may then be pulled over it, thus making it necessary to renew but one covering at a time.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is a 1. A suction roll covering, consisting of a knit sleeve, said sleeve adapted to be pulled over a suction roll and cover the periphery thereof, substantially as set forth.

2. A suction roll covering, consisting of a coarsely knit woolen sleeve, said sleeve adapted to be pulled over a suction roll and cover the periphery thereof, substantially as described.

3. A suction roll covering, consisting of? a plurality of knit yarn coverings, said coverings adapted to be placed around the periphery of a suction roll, substantially as described.
