Ynited States. residing at Faribault. in "the county of Rice and State of Minnesota. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'renches. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to that class of wrenches in which provision is made for adjustment to enable the jaws to grip nuts. pipes. or other objects of various sizes. and in which provision is also made for quick release when desired.
The present invention has for its objects among others to provide aniinproved wrench having a simple and cheap. yet reliable and etficient form of release mechanism whereby the nut or other object may be quickly and automatically released and yet which will firmly hold the nutor other object during the manipulation of the wrench. In the form herein shown there is provided an oscillatorv adjustable jaw. supported upon a spring disposed substantially at its mid center so as to allow the jaw to rock for the purpose of release. provision being made for holding the jaw against such movement while the wrench is in use.
9 aim further at improvements in the details of construction whereby we obtain a verystrong and durable wrench at small cost and of lightweight. Also one in which the parts are readily assembled and as eas ily disassembled for the purpose of repair or other purposes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear. and the novel featufjes thereot will be specincallv defined by the appended claims.
The invention. in its preferred form. is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. which. with the numerals of reference marked thereonrform a part of this specification. and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved wrench. with a portion of the shank broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 a longitudinal section. as on the line 3 of Fig. 1. looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the movable jaw. removed.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the shank which may be of any desired length, provided with a handle or hand grip of usual form. not, shown, the.said shank carrying the fixed jaw 2, preferably provided upon its inner face with serrations as at 3. vided with teeth 1 with which engages the adjusting screw or worm 5, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3. for the purpose of adjusting the movable jaw to and from the fixed jaw, in the usual manner. At the junction of the shank and stationary jaw we provide the portion 6 which not only serves to reinforce the device at this point, but also serves as a bearing for the. nut or other object to be grasped by the jaws.

This jaw is formed with the extension 15. as seen in Figs. 1. 3 'and 4. to engage the side of the nut or other object being-grasped. and the acting face of this movable jaw is preferably slightly concave as shown and this face is provided with serrations 16. for an obvious pur ose.
The movable jaw 1% is normally pressed outward. that is. toward the fixed or stationary jaw 2. by means of a spring 17. seated at its ends inpockets or the like 18 and 1.9 in the under side of the said movable jaw and the bottom wall of the extension of the housing as seen clearly in Fig. 3. From the aboveit will be seen that we have devised a simple, cheap and durable and efficient wrench. convenient in use, well adapted for automobile work-as well as for other purposes, and while the structural embodiment of the invention as hereinbefore set forth is what we at the present time considerpreferable, it is evident that the same is subject to changes, variations and modifications in detail. proportion of parts. etc, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. \Ye. therefore. do not wish to restrict ourselves to the eXact construction and arrangement of parts herein disclosed. but reserve the right to makesuch changes. va-

In a wrench. a shank. a fined'jaw, a movable jaw loosely rockingly mounted, a spring forming its support and normally forcing the same toward the fixed jaw and guidingmeans upon opposite sides of said support for guiding the movable jaw in its movements and locking it against movement.
2. In a wrench. a shank, a fixed jaw, a rockinglyanounted movable jaw. a casing for the movable jaw, having angular slots upon opposite sides of the fulcrum of the movable jaw. andmeans onthe movable jaw working in said slots.
3. In a wrench. a shank. a fixed jaw, a rockinglymounted springsupported movable jaw. a housing for the movable jaw having slots upon opposite sides of the fulcrum of the movable jaw with angular portions disposed at an angle to the length of the shank. and means on the movable jaw working loosely in said slots.
4. In a wrench. a shank, a stationary jaw. a housing movable on the shank and a spring supported movable jaw rockingly mounted within the housing and bodily 1novable toward and from the fixed jaw and relatively to the housing and angular slots upon opposite sides of the fulcrum of the movable jaw. said movable jaw having lateral projections cooperating with said slots to guide the jaw and to lock the same.
.3. in a wrench. a shank. a fixed'jaw, a rockingly mounted movable jaw fulcrumed upon a spring support. a casing for the jaw and connections between the movable jaw and easing embodying angular slots upon opposite sides of the fulcrum of the movable jaw. and lateral pins on the movable jaw cngageable in said slots whereby the wrench may he turned one way to grip an object and turned the other way to be released from the object so that a new grip may he had.
