DONALD DONALD, 0F SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
WIRE-STRAINEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1915.
Application filed June 3, 1914. Serial No. 842,767.
To all "Lo/tom it may concern Be it known that I, DONALD DONALD, a citizen of the Commonwealth of Australia, and residing at Glenmore Road, Rushcutters Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, in the Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Strainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to strainers used for tightening wires upon fences and the like and provides means whereby the wires are gripped in a better manner and without injury thereto, and whereby a strainer is operated with greater facility and ease.
My improvements will now be described in detail for which purpose reference will be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1, is a side elevation, Fig. 2, a reverse side elevation, and Fig. 3, a plan of the strainer, Fig. 4, is a side elevation on a larger scale of a gripper, Fig. 5, a perspective view of a lever handle, Fig. 6, a front view of the lever handle as used for twisting wire, and Fig. 7, a plan of a knot.
A rocking lever, 1, has pivoted rods, 2, 3 and 4 which are provided with grippers 5, 6 and 7 respectively. The grippers are alike in construction, each comprising a body terminating in a tail, 3, having a hole, 9,
, through which the rod 2, 3 or 4, passes and is guided. The other end of the body has a lug, 10, projecting at right angles. The inner face, 11, of the lug is curved and has a shallow groove, 12, extending throughout its.
length. Each gripper comprises a lever, 14, pivoted by a pin 15, to the body, the said lever being bent around the end thereof, and having a cam face, 16, provided with a groove, 17, corresponding to the groove, 12. The rod 2, 3 or 4 is bent at its end, 18, which is pivoted to the end of the lever, 14.
A recess, 20, formed in the head of the lever, 14, receives the spherical end, 21, of a pin, 22, which is slidable in a hole formed in a lug, 23, integral with the body. A spring, 24, surrounding the pin, 22, is in compression between the lug, 23, and a shoulder, 25, formed upon the said pin.
The rod, 2, is pivoted to the rocking lever. 1., between the rods, 3 and 4, and the said rocking piece has a socket 28, into which fits a handle, 29, for operating the lever.
To operate the strainer, the wire, 34, is gripped by the gripper attached to the middle rod, 2, and the Wire, 35, is gripped by the grippers attached to rods, 3 and 4. The rocking lever, l, is then reciprocated by its handle, 29. \Vhen pushed forward by the rocking lever, l, the grippers of the rods, 3 and 4, slide along the wire, and when the grippers are pulled back by the said lever, l, the pull of the rod, 3 or 4, causes the lever, 14, to grip the wire between the cam face, 16, and the base 11 of the lug 10. The spring, 24, keeps the cam face, 16, and the base 11 of the lug 10, in contact with the wire, 35, so that when a pull is exerted upon the rod 3 or 4, the lever, 14, immediately grips the wire against the lug 10.
The handle, 29, has a claw hammer head, 30, for hammering staples into or withdrawing them from a post.
A hook, 31, projecting from the edge of the handle and grooved guides 32 and 33 integral with and upon opposite sides of the handle are employed for twisting wire in the manner shown in Figs. 6 and 7. After the wires, 34 and 35, have been strained, the end 36, is bent into a loop, and the end, 37, of the other wire is passed through the loo The handle, 29, is then taken and its hodl; passed upon the loop, and made to embrace both sides thereof. The guide 32 or 33 is made to engage the end, 37, and the handle is then turned around the loop, with the result that the end, 37, is caught by the guide and twisted around the loop, and a knot made as shown in Fig. 7
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a wire strainer of the kind described, a gripper consisting of a body having a tail and a lug, a lever bent over the end of the body, the lever being pivoted to the body and having a cam face corresponding to the lug, and an operating rod passing through a hole in the tail and pivoted to the lever, said lug and cam face being located between the pivots of the said lever and rod.
2. In a wire strainer of the kind described, a gripper consisting of a body having a tail and a lug, a lever bent over the end of the body, the lever being pivoted to the body and having a cam face corresponding to the lug, an operating rod passing through a hole in the tail and pivoted to the lever, said lug and cam face being located between the pivots of the said lever and rod,.and means for closing the cam upon the lug.
3. In a wire strainer of the kind de scribed, a gripper consisting of a body having a tail and a lug, a lever bent over the end of the body, the lever being pivoted to the body and having a cam face corresponding to the lug, an operating rod passing through a hole in the tail and pivoted to the lever, said lug and cam face being located between the pivots of the said lever and rod and a spring in compression between the lever and the body and closing the cam face upon the lug.
4. In a wire strainer of the kind described, a gripper consisting of a body having a tail and a lug, a leverpivoted to the body, an operating rod pivoted to the lever and passing through a hole in the tail, the lever having a cam face corresponding to the lug; a rod having a spherical end fitting a recess in the lever, a second lug integral with the body, and having a hole through which the pin passes, and a spring upon the pin, and in compression between the lever and said second lug on the body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
DONALD DONALD.
