To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton Upper Falls, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pane-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pane fasteners having for one of its objects to provide a novel and eflicient means for retaining a pane of glass in its sash, without the use of nails or other retaining elements now commonly used.
Another object of the invention is to provide resilient elements which cooperate with the sashes, the sashes being preferably made'of metal, so as to retain the glass in the sash, and to prevent the displacement or they rattling of the same usually due to vibration.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a window constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectionalview taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, disclosing the fastening elements, as released from the sash.,
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred forn; of this invention a sash 5 is provided which is preferably made of metal, although Wood may be advantageously used, and is provided with a cut-out portion 6 in which is carried a suitable flexible'material 7 such as felt or the like, which engages the window pane 7 adjacent its marginal edges. The sash 5 is provided with a depending flange 9 on the outer inner face thereof,
which is so arranged as to provide a V- shaped recess 10 as shown to advantage in Fig. 3.
My improved pane fastening means comprises a plurality of substantially V-shaped strips 11, one of the arms ofthe V being beveled at the terminal thereof as indicated at 12, and is adapted for engagementin the V-shaped recess 10, the opposite arm there-' of having arranged on the outer face thereof a suitable fabric 13 preferably felt or the like, so as to engage the pane of glass 8, the terminal of said arms being straight so as to snugly engage with the inner face of the sash 5. One of the fastening elements 11 is secured at the top, bottom and each of the sides, the opposite ends thereof being cut diagonally as indicated at 14 and shown to advantage in Fig. 1, so as to snugly engage, thereby providin a waterproof fastening means, which wil prevent the decaying of the sash should the same be made of wood or the like.
Each of the V-shaped strips 11 is formed from a suitable elastic metal, so as to be snugly engaged with the sash and the win dow pane, the beveled end 12 of one of the arms being sprung into the ll-shaped recess 10 when pressure is exerted on the vertex of the V after the same has been placed in a position as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. After the same has been s rung inwardly it is seen that the depending ange 9 snugly engages one of the arms, while the terminal of the opposite arm snugly engages the inner face of one of the sash portions, the fabric 13 which is arranged on said second mentioned arm being in engagement with the pane of glass 8 as above stated, so as to provide a cushioned pocket for the pane adjacent its marginal edges.-
From an inspection of Figs. 2 and 3 it will be readily seen that this securing strip can be very easily put in place or removed but when once in place it will be held and prevented from accidentally slipping loose. It will also be noted that no special type of tool is required in order to put the strip in place or remove the same since, when putting the strip in place it is simply necessar to insert the free edge portion of the felt; under the overhanging flange 9 and thus forces the strip forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to remove the strip it is simply necessary to insort a sharpened instrument under the strip and force the same upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3.
