Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 5, 1915. Serial No. 597.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM I-I. TAPPAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stoves, and the primary object thereof is to provide means to deflect or other wise distribute the heat equally or uniformly over the entire top part of the stove which is utilized for cooking purposes, and to also provide means whereby when the top of the stove is not being utilized for cooking purposes, the heat may be diverted to circulateabout the oven, thus preventing waste of the heat, and in addition enabling the oven to be highly heated with a saving of time and fuel.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the heat controlling damper from the top of the stove, which means occupies minimum space so as .to leave the stove top substantially free and clear of obstructions.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a stove, the latter having the top removed; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the damper operating means; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the damper, showing the same in side elevation; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the invention; and Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 5.
The stove has the usual fire box 1, and a top heat passage or chamber, the bottom 2 of which is formed by the top of the oven 3. Flanges 4: are provided and utilized to support the top and covers of the stove.
For the purpose of evenly and equally distributing the heat throughout the stove top when the latter is to be utilized for cooking purposes, a deflector 5 is employed which latter is in the form of a strip of metal having its lower longitudinal edge seated on the bottom 2 of the heat passage.
Theouter end of the deflector 5 is provided with an out-turnedipart 5 which is riveted or bolted to the stove. The deflector is diagonally disposed and has its outer end 5 secured adjacent to the inner side of the fire box 1, and has its free. enddisposed at about the center of the bottom 2, so that the heat will'he caused to travel pathsindicated heat must necessarily travel entirely around the deflector before it can enter the flue as depicted in Fig. 5. An opening 9 aflfords admission to the flue 10 and is controlled by a gsliding damper 6 which latter slidesbetween a flangei and a track 6. An ear 8 projects rearwardly from the damper and is secured to the free end of the horizontal member of an L-shaped rod 7 the vertical arm of which rod projects up through an. elongated slot 7 formed in the stove top, and terminates in a hand gripping eye or portion 7. Since the hand grip 7 extends above the stove top, it is readily accessible and since it occupies but minimum space, the stove top is left substantially free and clear of any obstructions occasioned by the presence of this invention. Below the oven, the flue has the usual heat inlet 11 adjacent which a deflector plate 15 is positioned.
In operation, when it is desired to utilize the top of the stove for cooking purposes, the opening 9 is opened, which is accomplished by sliding damper 6, the heat thereupon pursuing the path of travel indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. Should the stove top be excessively heated, the damper 6 may be moved to partially close the opening 9, in which event a port-ion of the heat will pass down through the rear passage 13 and entering the bottom passage 14L will be admitted to the flue 10 through the opening 11. In event of it being desired to use the oven for baking purposes, then the damper 6 is moved to close opening 9, whereupon the heat will pass down through the passage 13, enter passage 14 and thence opening 11 and pass Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
up the flue. Obviously, by manipulation of the damper 6, the temperature of the oven may be controlled within manifest bounds.
From the forgoing it will be apparent that the damper 6 when closed controls the oven heat and when open cooperates with the deflector 5 to enable the heat to escape without passing through the passages 13 and 14, the deflector equally distributing the heat prior to the said escape of the latter. Further, the deflector 5 acts to evenly distribute heat over the oven top when the damper is closed, thus more eflectively and uniformly heating the oven.
What is claimed is:
1. Incombination with a stove having a heat passage beneath the top thereof, a deflector extending diagonally and partially v across the top and extending'from an inner corner of the fire box, a flue having an opening communicating with said passage to the rear of the deflector, the stove top having a longitudinal slot, an L-shaped rod having its vertical portion extending through the slot and provided With a hand grip which projects above the stove top, a track in'the passage, and a damper sliding in the track and having an outwardly extending earwhich is connected to the free end of the horizontal member of the L-shaped rod.
2. A stove having an oven and a fire-box,
a passage leading from the fire-box over the oven, a diagonal fixed deflector having an out-turned integralend secured to one side Copies of this patent may be obtained'for and having its free end terminating substantially midway across the oven top, a vertical passage leading from the first passage down the side of the oven, a third passage extending from the vertical passage beneath the oven, a flue having openings establishing communication 'therebetween and the passages above and below the oven, the opening connecting the first passage to the flue being disposed behind and adjacent the deflector, a second fixed deflector secured to the side of the stove and in the under passage adjacent the, junction with the vertical passage, said second deflector being diagonally arranged and terminating adjacent the opposite side of the stove, a track in the first passage, a damper slidable. in the track for closing the adjacent opening leading to the flue and provided with an outwardly extending ear on its forward end, the stove top having a longitudinal slot offset from the flue, and an L-shaped rod havingits vertical portion extending upwardly through the stove slot and terminating above the latter in a hand grip, the horizontal portion of the L-shaped I rod being connected to the ear of the damper for operating the latter.
