Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 17, 1915.
Application filed October 3, 1914. Serial No. 864,724.
' Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs,. of which the following is a specificatiomreference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to chairs and more particularly to connecting devices for connecting the tiltable back of a chair to the body thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide a connecting device which will be very simple and inexpensive in its construction, which will have a high degree of efliciency and which will permit the back of the chair to assume a variety of positions.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1' is a sectional view of a chair showing the movable back and the connecting device in elevation; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a portion of a chair showing the connecting device applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the connecting device showing the parts separated; and Fig. l is a horizontalsectional view taken on the line it w of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same applied to a type of chair commonly employed on parlor cars. In a chair of this type the back is formed in two parts, the outer part 1 being rigidly secured to the body 2 of the chair and constituting a frame upon which is supported a movable inner portion or back 8. It will be understood, however, that the use of the invention is not limited to chairs of this kind, but that it is applicable to chairs and devices ofvarious kinds.
In that embodiment of the invention here illustrated the movable back 3 of the chair is supportedupon the frame 1 by means of two springs arranged on opposite sides of the movable back and each having its opposite ends connected respectively with the movable back and theframe of the chair. This manner of supporting the movable back permits the back not only to move about a horizontal axis, but also to have a certain amount of bodily movement, thereby enabling the back to assume any one of a variety of positions. Further, by supporting the back by'springs in this manner it not necessary that the supporting devices should be arranged in exact alinement, as would be necessary if the back were mounted on fixed pivots. Consequently, the mounting of the back on-the frame of the chair is facilitated. The springs employed may be of various kinds. In the present instance I have shown each spring as formed of relatively heavy wire coiled about a horizontal axis, as shown at 4:, and having at each end straight extensions 5 and 6 which project on opposite sides of the axis of the coil, and, in the present instance, extend in diametrically opposite directions. Means are provided for attaching one extension of each spring to the movable back and for attaching the other extension to the frame. Preferably, these attachments or connections are made by providing the back and the frame with sockets adapted to receive the respective extensions of the springs. As here shown, that socket which is secured to the frame comprises a plate 7 having one edge turned upon itself, as shown at 8, to form a socket of a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the extension 6 of the spring, thereby enabling the spring to be readily inserted therein. A similar plate 9 is secured to the back 3 and provided with a similar socket 10 to receive the extension 5 of the spring. These plates may be secured to the respectiveparts of the chair by means of ordinary wood screws crating stops. As here shown the frame is provided with a lug 11, which projects beyond the edge thereof and is preferably formed on a plate 12, which may be secured to the frame bym'eans of screws or otherwise. The stops on the movable back, of which there are preferably two, are here shown in the form of a slotted plate 13 which is secured to the edge of the back adjacent to the plate 12, and has its slot of a width suflicient to receive the lug 11 and of sucha length that when the lug is in engagement with the rear end thereof the movable back will be substantially flush with the fixed frame of the chair. The front end of the slot is so arranged that the lug 11 will engage'it and check the movement of the movable back before it has been tilted far enough to cause injury. In the present and the stops may be supported in sired manner.
instance the slotted plate 13 has been formed integral with the socket plate 9 and is thus supported in position by the socket plate. This, however, is an optional construction any de- The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing deavide range of movement and permits the same to accommodate itself to various posi- :tions of the-occupant of the chair.
While I have shown and described one em bodiment of .my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will oceur =to-a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. In a chair, a frame having side members, springs secured to the respective side members and .a back arranged between said side members and supported by said springs, said springs being secured to said back between its upper and lower ends.
2. In chair, a frame comprising side members, a movable back arranged between said side members, and springs interposed between the opposite sides of said back and the adjacent side members of said frame, between the upper and lower ends of said back, and forming the sole support for the back.
3. In a chair, a frame comprising side members, a movable back arranged between said side members, coiled springs interposed between the opposite sides of saidback and the adjacent side members of said frame to support said back for both bodily'and turning movements relatively to said frame, and
means to secure one end of each of said springs to said back between the upper and lower ends thereof and to secure the other end of each of said springs to the adjacent side member of said frame.
4. In a chair, a frame comprising side members, a movableback arranged between said sidemembers, springs coiled about horizontal axes and arranged in spaces between the opposite sides of said .back and the respective side members of said frame to'sup- 7 back ;and tothe respective side'members of said frame, the plates on saidback being positioned above the respective ,plates on said frame, springs coiled about hor zontal axes .and each jihavmg atsendsextendmg upwardly and downwardly, respectively, and adapted to enter the respective isockets on said back and on :thegside' members ofsaid frame.
6. In .a chair, a -frame comprising side members, and git back movably mounted between said side members, springs interposed between the oppositesides of said back and the respective side members of said frame, between the upper andlower ends of said back, and forming the sole 'supportfor said back, and a stop to limit the movement of said back in either direction, j
7. In a chair, a frame comprising side members, and aback movably mounted between said side members, springs interposed between the opposite sides of said back and the respective side members of said frame,
between the upper and lower ends .of said a.
back, and forming the sole support for said :back, a lug secured to one of the side mem :bers of said frame, and a slotted plate car ried by said back to receive said lug, whereby the ends of said slot formstops cooperating with said lug to limit the movement of said back.
8. Ina cha1r,-a frame having side membore, a movable back arranged between said side members, a plate secured to said back between its upper and lower ends and hava vertical, socket and also having a slottedportion formedintegral therewith and extending along the :edge of said back, a
second plate secured to one of the side mem bers of said f :aine and having a socket, a coiled spring interposedj'between said back and .said frame and having its end portions adapted to enter-the respectivesockets, and
of said frame and having a lug arr-angedto enter the slot 111 sa d slotted plate.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature Copies of this patent may beobtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
