- Be it known that I, FREDERICK ELMORE BROWN, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Boston, in the county of 'Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
Theinvention relates to burners, and has for an object to provide a gasburner for use I inheatingand the like and whereby a flame and combustion will be produced which will be particularly adaptable for use in heating. I
The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a gas burner particularly adapted for use as an instantaneous water heater, the said burner being also adapted for various other purposes and arranged and constructed with the object of v producing a perfectcolnbustion ofthe gas used in connection with the burner. In the further disclosure of the invention referenw is to'be had to thelaccompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which*similar'characters of reference denote corresponding partsin all the views, and in which: ,7 1

Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a gas burner 10 comprising a tubular base 11 terminating in a dished head 12 forming a chamber 13, the said head 12 being suitably closed by a perforated burner plate 1% preferably provided with a circular rib 15 on the under side thereof and which extends into a recess 16 formed in the head in order to support the burnerplate 14 on the dished head 12 of the base 11. A gas supply pipe 17 communicates'with the tubular portion of the base 11 so that when gas passes through the pipe 17 it will issue from the inner end of the pipe and within the tubular portion ofthe base, from which it will pass upwardly into the dished head 12 and thence through the apertures in the plate 14 and at which place it will be ignited.

A pipe 26 connects thereservoir 23 with the boiler 21 and an equalizing' pipe 27 connects the upper portion of the reservoir with the upper portion of the boiler in order that the normal pressure in the boiler will be equal to the normal pressure in the reservoir.
Now it will be understood that the chamber 13 is a mixing chamber for gas, air and steam, the gas being received in the chamber through the tubular portion of the base, the air being admitted to the chamber through one or more of the perforations in the burner plate and the steam being admitted to the chamber through'the perforations in the coil 18. When a supply of gas has been admitted to the chamber 13 and passes through the perforations in the burner plate, the said gas is ignited while issuing from the perforations in the burner plate and consequently will heat the water contained in the boiler 21, thus forming steam which will pass downwardly through the pipe 20 and into the coil 18, from which the steam will issue through the perforations in the coil so that the mixing of the steam and air, as mentioned heretofore, with the gas passing through" the flame and bring about erforations "an result in a long flame producing a perfect combustion of the gas immediately exterior of the cham- 7 ber and above the burner plate 14:. It will be readily apparent that the amount of water in the boiler will be governed entirely by the amount of water in the reservoir and that the amount of water in the reservoir is governed by the float valve 25, the level of water in the boiler and reservoirbeing substantially the same at all times. By providing the deflecting plate 22 the gas entering the chamber will be spread outwardly in order that a substantially equal amount of gas will issue from all of the perforations in the burner plate, itbeing apparent that if the deflecting plate were not provided the gas would tend to issue in a single stream through the central perforations of the burner plate. It will of course be seen that the deflecting plate 22 also spreads the steam which will issue from the coil 18, thus preventing any concentration of the steam at one point below the burner plate. As mentioned heretofore the pipe 27 is provided in order to maintain an equal pressure in the boiler relatively to the pressure in the reservolr.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the device described is of a simple construction, can be easily operated 'and'by the means provided for mixing of gas with air and steam the pressure produced by the steam together with its action in mixing with the gas will produce a long a perfect combustion,
. while at the same time the gas when ignited at the burner plate, aside from performing a specific function of'heating a water tank or Copies of this patent may be obtained for the like, will also maintain a supply of steam in the boiler 21 and which is used to further a proper combustion of the gas.
It should also be particularly noted that the pressure of the steam issuing with the gas out of the burner plate produces a flame which, on account of the pressure of steam behind it, is particularly adaptable for use in connection with heating coils and wherein the flame, being very long, will extend the length of the coils so as to substantially heat the parts thereof and come in directcontact with the various convolutions of the coils.
Having thus described my invention, I .claim:
In a gas burner, the combination with a tubular base forming a gas supplying conduit, of a dished head supported on the'upper end of the tubular base and having the p j same communicating with the interior of the head, a-perforated burner plate seated upon the dished head and forming a cover therefor, a perforated steam coil within the head and having I an end through the burner plate, a pipe on the projecting end of the steam coil,.a boiler supported by the pipe, with the pipe extending into the boiler, and a deflecting platecarried by the projecting end of the steam coil, said deflecting plate being interposed between the body of the steam coil and the burner plate.
