Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 17, 1915.
Application filed October 26, 1912. Serial No. 727,869.
T all whomt't may concern Be it known that we, VVILLIAM W. BRAD- LEY and ARTHUR l1. CAMPBELL, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and usettul Recording-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to recording machines and particularly to means for shifting an auxiliary printing element into position so that the imprint of its type is recorded at certain times in connection with the imprint of the main character; and it consists in the novel combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
in describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts. in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of the recording machine embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, parts being omitted, the auxiliary printing character being shown as shifted by the hand operated lever to carry its type into the printing line. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, parts being removed, of parts seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 41 is a detail view of the auxiliary printing element, the lever for operating the same and a portion of the mechanism for shifting said connections. Fig. 5 is a face view of the main printing element and auxiliary printing element, the ribbon being broken away. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the cam disk. Fig. 7 is aface view of a card showing records with and without the auxiliary character.
Our invention is shown as embodied in a card time recorder and only those parts pertinent to the invention are shown. The case, time movement, means for effecting relative lateral shifting movement of the printing couple and card receiver and other mechanisms being omitted. H
1 is the main printing element of the printing couple which also'includes a platen 2, the main element 1 and the platen 2 having relative movement to effect the making of a record; and as here shown the platen 2 is a hammer movable toward and from the element 1. The element 1 is here shown as composed of a'plurality of type wheels 3, 1 and 5 as the minute, hour, and day wheels of a time recorder. The type wheels 3, i: and 5 are arranged side by side and are actuated by suitable mechanism including a train of gearing 6 which is connected by means of a shaft 7 to the time movement not shown. As the means for actuating these type wheels form no part of this invention, and as several forms of such means are well known to those skilled in the art, further description is deemed unnecessary.
The type wheels 3, 4 and 5, gearing 6 and other parts pertinent to the operation of the type wheels are supported by a carriage 8 including side plates 9 and shafts and cross rods between the side plates. This carriage 8 and other parts of the time recorder pertinent to this invention are supported by a main frame including side plates 10 and cross bars 11. The hammer 2 is here shown as mounted on a rock shaft 12 supported between the side plates 10 of the main frame.
13 is a ribbon which runs on spools 14; supported by the carriage 8, this ribbon being usually a two color or bichrome ribbon, as shown in Fig. 5, one color being in position to print from the type wheels 3, 1 and 5 and the other to receive the impression from the auxiliary type to be described.
15 is an operating member for the hammer 2, said member being here shown as in the form of a lever mounted on a rock shaft 16 and having a latch 17 pivoted at 18 thereto which engages a shoulder 19 on the rock shaft 12. Downward movement of the lever 15 is against the action of a returning spring 20 and during such downward movement, the latch 17 engages the shoulder 19 and rocks the shaft 12 carrying the hammer 2 to the right, Fig. 1, and tensioning the spring 21 acting on the shaft 12, until the latch 17 is disengaged from the shoulder 19 by a knock-off device 22 which is carried by part of this invention and any other suitable mechanism may be substituted therefor.
26 is an auxiliary printing element having a printing character or type 27 movable into and out of the printing line, it being shown as out of the printing line in Fig. 1 and in the printing line in Figs. 2 and 5. Said element 26 as here illustrated, comprises a lever pivoted at one end at 28 to the inner side of one of the side plates 9 of the carriage 8 and having its type 27 at its free end. The pivot 28 is arranged parallel to the axis of the type wheels 3, 4 and 5, and is located and which are controlled in their shifting by the mechanism for driving the type wheels 3, 4 and 5. This connection as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3, includes a link 30 pivoted at 31 to the lever 26 and depending therefrom, and carrying a latch or pawl 32 at its lower end which coacts with a shoulder or stud 33 projecting from an arm 34 mounted on the rock shaft 16. The latch or pawl 32 is yieldingly connected to the link 30 and is here shown as formed with a slot 35 through which extends fastening members 36, and as connected to the link by a spring 37 which permits the latch 32 to move with the operating lever 15 after the type carrying lever 26 has been limited in its downward movement.
The downward movement of thelever 26 is against the action of a returning spring 26*, and the pivotal movement of said lever is limited by a shoulder 26 carried by the side plate 9 and extending through a slot 38 in said lever 26. The means for controlling the shifting of the link 30, so that the latch 32 is carried into and out of engagement with the shoulder 33 includes a cam actuated with the hour wheel 3 by the gearh1g6, and power-transmitting means actuated by the cam.
39 is a cam disk mounted on the outer side of one of the side plates 9 of the earriage 8 and having a plurality of adjustable points 40. The disk 39 is here shown as mounted on the hub 41 of a gear wheel 42 meshing with a gear 43 which forms part of the train of gearing 6 actuating the type wheels 3, 4 and 5.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the disk 39 is formed with inner and outer concentric series of holes 44, 45, each hole of one series being paired with one of the holes of the other series, and the points are shown as secured in a pair of said holes 44, 45 by screws or pins 46, 47, the pin or screw 47 extending through a slot 48 arranged to permit lateral adjustment of the outer or working end 49 of the cam point. There are twentv four holes in each series,
each holecrepresenting an hour of the day,
and the twenty four holes are divided into two sets representing day and night periods. The holes of each set are numbered from 1 to 12 inclusive. In adjusting the points 40 in the positions at which it is desired they become effective, the numbers associated with the holes are used to guide the workman in setting the points.
The disk 39 is secured to the gear wheel 41 by means of fastening members as screws 50 extending through slots 51 in the disk 39 and into the gear 42, the slots 51 permitting a fine adjustment of the disk 39 relatively to the main type wheels 3, 4 and 5, as the hour type wheel 3 and the disk should turn in unison in order that when certain. type on the type wheels 3, 4 and 5 are at the printing line, the auxiliary printing element 24 should be connected to the operating lever in order to be moved to the printing line.
The power-transn1itting means between the cam disk 39 and the link 30 comprises a pivoted pawl-carrying lever 52 pivoted at 53 to the outer face of the side plate 9 of the carriage 8 to which the printing lever 26 is pivoted, the lever extending downwardly from its pivot between said side plate and the disk 39 in the rear of the axis of the disk, and a pawl 54 carried by the lever 52 and coacting with a ratchet wheel 55 which operates a cam 56 hai'ing high and low surfaces 57 and 58 which engage the link 30. The high surface 57 moves the link 30 to the left, Figs. 1, 2 and 4, against the action of a returning spring 59 to carry the latch 32 out of engagement with the shoulder 33, and the low point of said cam permits the spring 59 to move the link 30 to carry the latch 32 into the position shown in Fig. 1 into engagement with the shoulder 33. The pawlcarrying lever 52 is here shown as formed with a rearwardly extending arm 60 which terminates in a portion extending around the rear edge of the disk 39 and having an inclined face 61 arranged in the path of the engaging ends 49 of the points 40 of the cam.
During the rotation of the cam disk 39 to the left, Fig. 1, the engaging ends 49 of the points 40 engage at intervals the inclined face 61 and move the pawl-carrying lever 52 rearwardly on its pivot 53 against the action of its spring 59. The pawl 54 is pivoted at 63 to the lever 52 near the lower end thereof and extends forwardly from its pivot and coacts with the ratchet wheel 55 actuating the cam 56, the ratcheting action of the pawl being against the influence of the spring 64. The cam 56 and ratchet wheel 55 are carried on a suitable stud projecting outwardly from one of the side plates 9 carrying the disk 39 and coacting parts, between said side plate and the disk 39, and retrograde movement of the ratchet wheel 55, is prevented by the pawl 65. The lower end of the lever 52 extends through a slot in a horizontally extending plate 66 which limits the pivotal movement of said lever, and said lever is provided with an extension 67 at its upper end serving as a handle for operating the lever manually when regulating the machine. Movement of the pawl-carrying lever 52 by the cam 39 is resisted by a spring 68 connected to the lower end of said lever and to one of the side plates 9. The high points 40 of the cam disk 39 are here shown as positioned at the holes designating the hours of 8 a. m., 12 m.; 1 p. m. an d5 p. m., so that all registrations between 8 a. m. and 12 m. will be unaccompanied by the auxiliary printing record, and all registrations between 12 111. and 1 p. m. will be accompanied by the imprint of such character, while all records made between 1 p'. m. and 5 p. 111. will be unaccompanied by the imprint of said character.. The points -10 may be adjusted to operate at any other time. This time recorder is for use in business houses where all. the workers or a class of workers enter and leave at certain regular times and where it a worker does not arrive at the regular time or leaves before the regular closing time, the time lost by him is deducted from the full time.
In operation, if the workman enters on time, and places his card in the receiver 25, the operation of the lever 15 effects the printing of the record upon the time card in the usual manner. 'As the hour wheel and other type wheels are actuated by the time movement, the cam disk 39 is revolved and at the desired intervals, the points 40 of the cam 39 engage the surface 61 of the lever 52 and actuate the lever 52 to shift the cam 56 and move the latch 32 either into or out of operative position. When the latch 32 is in operative position which in this form of my invention is between 8 and 12 a. m. and 1 and 5 p. m., the auxiliary printing character will be printed along with the imprint from the type wheels 3, and 5 showing to the time keeper that the time printed on the card is irregular.
