Be it known that I. Jrznonr: N. HUM- rnnnrs. residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crimping-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of machines more especially designed for crimphad of the can. or other vessel to which the said cover is to he applied. a plurality of ditl'erently shaped crimping members for engaging. turning and crimping the edges of the said cover. a revolving carrier that supports the crimpinn members. and means for successively bringing the dillerently shaped crimping members into action. all of which will he hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which:

in the praetical'armngement of my invention. the same includes a litd plate or tahle i on which the pail. or other vessel to be crimped, is set during the operation of applying the cover thereto.
In the drawing is shown a bed plate 1 mounted on an upright frame 2, the upper end of which supports the crimping mechanism. the construction of which forms the essentialfeature of my invention.
The crimping mechanism comprises a. tubular member 31 the upper end of which is connected in any suitable manner) to a cross plate B, the said upper end being; shown as externally threaded to screw into a threaded passage in the said cross plate or bar B. see Figs. 1. 3 and 6.
The lower end of the member 31 is closed by a solid head plate33 that engages with ball bearings 35 supported in the hall race 36 that is formed in the top of a swivelcd head D. The head D has a pendent shank d and to the said shank is attached a presser head it that is utilized to hold the cover or lid. to be cri'mped. down on the pail or vessel. during the operation of crimping the said lid thereon. it being understood that ditlerent sizes of heads E are used to suit the different diameters of the pails or vessels to which the covers or lids are to be applied.
F is a collar that is clamped on the said lower end of the member 31 for controlling the tension of acoil spring S held on the memher 31 and its function is to force a sec mid cross bar upwardly when the shaft A is released. as will he presently explained.
Cross bar C has two sets of apertures c-c. and it also has a central hub c for slidablv engaging the member 31. and the said hill) is transversely apertured as at w to receive a locking pin 0 that passes through vertically elongated slots 32 in the shaft A. and through the lower end of the shaft A. the said connection of parts providing for the raising and lowering of the cross bar C with the shaft A when the latter is moved terti- Cally.
The upper end of the shaft A is slidably journaled in bearingboxes l414 mounted on the horizontally slotted head portion 21 of the main supporting frame and the said upper end of the shaft carries a sleeve i that is adjustably mounted thereon and which is joined with the shaft by a key pin 11 that passes through one of a series of holes 1:? in the shaft. which holes are provided for setting the operating parts to suit the height. of the pail or other vessel to be covered.
8 designates a clutch ring that is mounted on the sleeve 9 and which has trunnions 80S0 for engaging with the forkedbearing ends 71 of a rocker arm fulcrumed at i' on the head 21 of the main frame and whose rear end carries a counterpoise for counterbalancing the weight of the shaft A and the crimping mechanism carried thereby. A spring 13 is also provided that joins with the main frame and the rocker bar 70 for assisting in bringing the said bar back to a normal position.
The cross bar B, before referred to, has
two sets of apertures 6-4) that correspond with the apertures in the upper end of the shaft and thetwo or more sets of apertures ec in the bar C for setting the crimping mechanism to operate on cover lids of different diameters.
' 'G are two hanger arms that are piv otally hung from the cross bar B by the pins gg that engage the selected ones of the apertures b in the said bar B. Th: hanger arm G has a slot 9 which has a portion 9 arallelism with the longitudinal axis of t e arm, and which has also a lower portion 9 that extends outwardly at an obtuse angle to the said upper portion g and in the said compound slot g g* plays a stud c that projects from and is held in a selected oneof the apertures 0 in the bar G.
Hanger arm G is also formed with a' slot having angle portions gg"-for-receiving the stud 0, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and it should be here stated that the slots in the arms GrG are relatively so formed with respect to each other that in descending the bar C first swingsthe arm G inwardly and in advance of bringing the arm G inwardly whereby to bring the crimping roller W, mounted on the lower end of the said arm G into active engagement with the edge of the lid to be crimped, so as to turn the said lid edge down before the roller on the other arm G is swung into position for applying the final crimping operation to the said lid.
The crimping rollers W 2 are removably mounted on the heads of screw pins H-H that thread into screw sockets ia h in the lower ends ofthe arms GrG and they are held by lock nuts h'h'. bF- 2 indicate jamnuts for holding the rollers \VW on the heads of the said pins HH.
In the practical application of my invention, the crimping rollers are shaped to suit the character of the crimps to be made. In the drawings, the roller W is shown with a plane incline face for simply engaging the lid edge and bending it down over the upper edge of the pail, as shown in Fig. 2. Roller W is so curved that it crimps the turned down edge under the edge of the pail month, the latter also turned outwardly and j eld there to form a solid bearing (against which the lid edgeis crimped) by the presser plate E, the lower edge e and the under face of which is suitably shaped to form the solid edge, as is clearly shown on Figs. 2 and 3.
For manually actuating the shaft A and the mechanism that is suspended thereon, a foot lever 5 is provided which is fulcrumed at 50 on the base of the frame 2 and is connected to a lift rod 51 which'pivotally joins with a rocker arm 70, mounted on top of the framing 2.
For the up-thrust of the lever 55, a stop block at is mounted upon a threaded shaft 3 having a hearing at the lower end on the base frame 2 and a bearing at the upper end in the under side of the bed plate 1, it also having a fixedly attached hand wheel 30.
By turning the hand wheel 30, in either direction, and holding the stop 4 from turning with the shaft 3, the said stop can be raised or lowered to the position desired, it being understood that the said stop regulates the lip-throw of the lever 55 and the corresponding drop of the shaft A with the crimping mechanism.
Motion is imparted to the shaft- A in any approved manner, for example. in the drawings a pulley wheel 25 is keyed on the shaft A, located in the slotted head portion 21 of the main frame and with which engages a drive belt 26 that takes over a drive pulley 27 on the upper end of a drive shaft '28, in practice preferably driven by a motor The operation of my invention is best explained as follows: The lid or cover isplaced upon the mouth of the pail, and itis held thereon by bringing the crimping mecha-- nism down to the operative position, which is done by depressing the lever 5 which, through the rocking shaft 70 moves the shaft A down and in consequence the crimping devices are lowered or dropped until the presser plate E engages and holds the lid solid upon the upper edge of the pail and when this occurs the further down movementof the cro$ member B and its hanger arms GG= is arrested, it being understood that the cross arm or member C is connected with the shaft through the medium of the locking pin which has free movement. vertically, in the oppositely disposed slot 32 in the tubular member 31. By reason of the down movement of the member 31 and the arm B being checked after the presser head E engages the lid. the final movemento'r drop of the shaft carries the pin 1: and the cross member C farther down and thereby causes the arms GG that carry the crimping rollers PW-ll" respectively, to swing inwardly and since the slot and pin construction for the arm G is arranged to operate in advance of the like parts for the arm G the edge of the lid is first bent over the upper edge of the pail by the roller V, see Fig. '2, which brings the partial or initial crimp of the said lid in position to be engaged by the roller W see Fig. 3, which then completes the crimping operation, it being further understood that the inthrust of the roller l is checked before the roller begins the final crimping operations.
What I claim is:
1. In a crimping machine, a longitudinally movable and a rotatably mounted shaft, a lower cross bar fixed to the said shaft. an upper cross bar loosely mounted on the said shaft and rotatable therewith, a
' presser member loosely mounted on the shaft and connected to move with the said upper cross bar, aplurality of crimping arms carried by the said upper cross bar, cooperating connections between the said arms and the lower cross bar and cooperating connections between the shaft and the presser member carrying bar in virtue of which as the said shaft is moved longitudinally in one direction, the said upper cross bar is moved to bring the presser member in contact with the work and upon further movement of the said shaft in the same direction, the said lower cross bar is moved farther away from the said upper cross bar to thereby swing the crimping arms toward the work and crimping elements carried by the said arm.
2. In a crimping machine, a longitudinallv movable and a rotatably mounted shaft. crimping mechanism mounted upon the said shaft to rotate therewith, the said mechanism including an upper cross bar loosely mounted on the shaft, .21 lower cross bar fixedly mounted upon the said shaft, a'
plurality of crimping arms, crimping devices mounted thereon. the said arms being pivotally hung from the upper cross bar, a prcsser member carried by the upper cross bar. the aforesaid elements being'coiiperatively connected whereby on a downward movement of the shaft the presser member is first caused to engage the work and upon further downward movement of the said shaft the crimping arms are swung inwardly to move the crimping devices into an operative position.
3. In a crimping machine a longitudinally movable and rotatably mounted shaft, :1 crimping mechanism carried by the shaft to rotate therewith, the said mechanism including an upper cross bar loosely mounted on the shaft, the lower cross bar fixedly mounted on the said shaft, a plurality of crimping arms, a crimping device mounted on each of the said arms, the said arms being pivot ally hung from the upper cross bar, a presser member carried by the upper cross bar, cooperative-connections between the lower cross bar and the said arms, adapted for moving the crimping devices to their operative positions and for continuing the movement of one of the said devices after the other of the said devices has completed its work.
4. in a crimping machine, a longitudinally and rotatably mounted shaft, a tubular member mounted upon the shaft and in which the said shaft has free movement, said tubular member having oppositely disposed longitudinal slots, a lower cross arm mounted upon the tubular member, and connected to the shaft to move therewith; an upper cross arm mounted upon the tubular member to move therewith, a presser on the lower end of the tubular member, crimping mechanism including at least one arm pivotally supported on the upper cross head, said arm having a longitudinal slot provided with an angle portion, a key mounted in the lower cross arm that projects into the said slot, and a crimping device carried on the lower end of the pivoted arm.
