2 Application filed January 11,1915. *SeriaTNouLfiQZ.
To all whom z't may Connemara" 1 Be it known that'I, iRnssLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stevens Point, in the cou'ntyof Portage-and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Lifters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stove lid lifters, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which is so constructed that it will reliably grip a lid in a vise-like manner and prevent all danger of its being dropped when lifted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a one-piece stove lid lifter so constructed that all wabbling thereof in the stove lid pocket is prevented.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 represents a vertical section taken through a stove cover and a portion of the lifter, which latter is shown in operative engagement with said cover; Fig. 2 is aplan view showing the lifter applied; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the lifter.
In the embodiment illustrated, a stove cover C is shown which is provided with a peculiarly formed pocket P to receive the end of the lifter. This pocket P has an overhanging lip or flange F at its inner end in which is formed an open slot S extending inwardly from the edge of said lip and in a plane at right angles thereto. The bottom of this pocket P is concave for a purpose to be described.
The lifter which constitutes the invention,
is preferably formed from a single piece of metal but it may be formed in several parts if desired. The lifting portion may be made of metal and the handle of wood or other non-conducting material, but in order to produce a cheap simply constructed de- 'vice of this character, it is made in one piece as shown, and comprises a handle 1 with a shank 2 at its front end which merges into a lid engaging foot 3 having a central rib 4 merging into an upturned nose t, at its free end which is designed to in andlengage a slot S in the overhanging 311p ornthefnnerend ofthepocket P. Wings 5 and 6 are disposed on op osite sides of the rib preferably adjacent the lower face thereof and which extend laterally and are' formed near their rear ends with enlargements 7 which are designed to form an extended bearing surface for engagement with the upper edge of the opposite sides of the pocket P near its outer end, whereby the lifter is firmly wedged between this edge and the under face of the lip F, when the lifter is inserted within said pocket as is shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. These wings 5 and 6 are preferably cast integral with the lifter and the lower faces thereof are arranged flush with the lower curved face of the lifting foot 3 of the lifter and conform to the curvature thereof. These wings as shown, taper toward their front ends and toward their edges to facilitate their insertion under the lip of the cover pocket and to provide a wedge-like engagement of said wings by the lower face of said lip and the inner end of the bottom of said pocket, and the farther the lifter is forced into the pocket the tighter will the wings be gripped between the lower wall of the pocket and its lip. The nose 4. is of a width substantially equal to the width of the slot S and fits snugly in said slot with its upper face extending above the upper face of the lid and prevents all possibility of the wabbling of the lid.
From the above description, it will be obvious that a lifter constructed as set forth, will reliably engage a cover or lid to be lifted and hold it in a vise-like grip, and thus prevent all danger of the lid being dropped such as frequently occurs when using lifters of ordinary construction.
While this improved lifter is shown applied to a stove lid having a peculiarly formed pocket, itis obvious that it may be used with any lid pocket having side flanges.
I claim as my invention:
1. A stove lid lifter comprising a shank having a longitudinally curved foot at one end with a central longitudinally arranged rib on its upper face projecting beyond the free end of said foot and merging into an upturned nose, said rib having perpendicular side faces, and lateral wings projecting from the side edges of the foot at the rear thereof.
2. The combination with a stove lid having a pocket therein with a curved bottom and an overhanging lip at its inner end, said lip having an open slot extending transversely thereof; of a lifter comprising atially corresponding in width to the'Width of the slot in said lip and adapted to fit snugly in said slot and to project above the I nesses. yond the free end of said foot and merging into an upturned nose, SiLId 'IlOSB substan-,
upper face of the lip to prevent Wabbling oi the lid, said foot having lateral extensions at its rear end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit EMERY e. REssLERQ Witnesses: I
