SURFACING-MACHINE. 7
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1915-.
Application filed December 7, 1914. Serial No. 875,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT CASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Surfacing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to a surfacing machine, and relates more particularly to an appliance for planing, leveling and smoothing the block forming the base or bed of a clicking machine upon which the material to be cut by the dies is supported.
In many shops and factories, such as shoe, shirt, waist, cardboard and similar factories, it is the practice to cut the material into the desired blanks or forms with suitable dies,
the material being placed upon a block and forced through the material, but into the blocks, the surfaces of the blocks become out and chipped, and then become rough, jagged and uneven, and in many lnstances the fiber of the wood is gouged out to form objectionable cavities or recesses. Since it is essential that the surface of the block be smooth and even, to get the best results, it has been the custom in the shops, to employ a file for smoothing down the surface of the block, and since the block is'usually of hardwood, the filing of the surface thereof'involves a laborious and lengthy operation:v Even then, it is practically impossible to level or smooth the surface of the block properly.
It is the broad idea of the present invention, to provide a novel and improved appliance whereby the surfaces of such blocks may be readily and properly planed, leveled and smoothed.
.sults.
It is also within the scope of the invention, to provide an apparatus of the nature indicated, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, as well as being convenient, practical and eificient in use. p 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in its pre ferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clicking machine illustrating the present appliance applied thereto, a portion of the frame of the machine being broken away. Fig. 2 is a fragmental plan view of the clicking machine illustrating the present device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom view of the present attachment. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View taken on the line 4l4: of Fig. 1.
The invention as illustrated, is in the form of an attachment for a clicking ma chine used in shops and factories for cutting leather, fabrics, paper, and the like, but it is to be understood, at the outset, that the invention involves broad features which enable the device to be employed in other capacities. The clicking machine illustrated and designatedgenerally by the numeral 1, embodies a frame or stand 2, carrying the horizontal block or bed 3 for supporting the material, and embodying an oscillatory and vertically movable weighted arm 4 above the block 3. The machine isment to the clicking machine, for coopera tion therewith.
The present attachment or appliance is designated generally by the numeral 7, and embodies a body or casting 8 seated against the bottom of the lower flanges 5 of the clicking machine arm 4. The body 8 of the attachment is fastened to the arm 4,. and to this end bars 9 are secured to one edge of the body 8 and have their upper ends-bent angularly, as at 10, to engagelove'r one of J the flanges v.5, clamping screws 11 being threaded through the angular ends 10 of the bars'9' to impinge against the respectiveflangeb. The other edge of the body 8 is provided with threadedstems or fingers 12 projecting therefrom beyond the other flange 5 of the arm 4, and uponwhichstems are .slidably mounted plates 13 having their lower ends bent angularly as at 14, to engage under the body 8, while the upper ends of the plates 13 are bent angularly, as at 15, to
' extend over the respective flange 5. Clamping screws 16 are threaded through the angular ends 15 of the plates 13 to bear against at its ends with laterally proj ectingbearings therespective flange 5. for assisting in clamping the body '8 to the bottom of the flanges 5. Nuts 17 are threaded upon the stems 12 and bear against the plates 13 for drawing the bars 9 and plates 13 into clamped engagement with the flanges 5.
The body 8 of the attachment is provided 18, through which a horizontal rotary shaft 19 i journaled for both rotary and'sliding movements. A cylinder 20 issecured upon' the shaft 19.between the bearings 18, and an annular series of longitudinal rasp files 21 having either diagonal or longitudinal teeth,
' are secured in any suitable manner upon the cylinder 20 in spaced relation to provide recesses o-r channelstherebetween for the saw dust or filings.
In order to impart a reciprocatory or rec-M tilinear motion to the cylinder 20, during the rotation thereof, a collar or sleeve 23 is secured upon the shaft 19 at one endof the cylinder 20, and is provided with an endless cam groove 23, and a'plate or member 24 secured to the bottom of the body 8 is provided with a projecting finger 25 engaging the groove 23, so that when the cylinder 20 is rotated with the shaft 19, the shaft and cylinder carried thereby will be reciprocated longitudinally.
As a means for rotating the shaft 19, there is provided a shelf 26 having a clamp 27 engaging the upper flange 6 of the arm 4, to attach the shelf rigidly to the said arm, and an electric motor 28 is mounted upon the shelf 26, and its armature carries a pulley wheel 29, while an elongated pulley wheel 30 is secured upon one of the protruding ends of the shaft 19, and a belt 31 is trained around the pulley wheels 29 and 30 to operatively connect the motor and shaft 19.
The motor or prime mover 28 may be carried in any suitable manner for operating the shaft 19, and if desired, a special or independent crane may be provided for carrying the present mechanism, so that the arm 4 of the clicking machine may be taken to represent the arm or beam of a special crane, which is arranged to swing over the block 3.
In operation, after the attachment is properly applied to the arm 4 of the clicking machine, and the arm 4 properly adjusted so that when it is swung back and forth, the filing or surfacing cylinder 20 will moveover the surface of the block 3, the shaft 19 is rotated by means of the prime mover 28. It will be evident that when the shaft 19 is rotated, it will also be given a longitudinal reciprocatory movement, and as the arm 4 is swung back and forth over the block 3, the files 21 of the cylinder 20 will act upon the surface of the block 3 in the desired manner for planing, leveling and smoothing the surface of the block, whereby when the attachment is again removed, the clicking machine will be operable with the desired efliciency.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a clicking machine embodying a horizontal block, and a horizontally swinging arm above the same, of an attachment embodying a body, means for securing the body to the said arm, a horizontal shaft carried by the body, a filing cylinder carried by the shaft and arranged to act upon the surface of the block, means carried by the arm for imparting rotatory movement to the shaft, and means for reciprocating the shaft when it is rotated.
2. The combination with a clicking machine having a horizontal block, and a horizontally-swinging arm above the same, of
an attachment embodying a body resting against the bottom of the arm, means for clamping the body to the arm, the body having laterally projecting bearings, a horizontal shaft journaled through the said bearings for rotatory and reciprocatory movements, a filing cylinder carried by the shaft for operation upon the surface of the block, a cam carried by the shaft and having as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaan endless cam groove, a finger carried by ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
the body and. engaging the cam groove, and ALBERT CASH. means carried by the arms for rotating the Witnesses: 5 shaft. MICHAEL J. HAGERTY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing BELLE P. GARTWRIGHT.
