ltrrcnmn a citizen of the United States of America, residing in W est New Brighton, Staten Island, in the borough of Richmond, city and idtate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Heaters, of which the following is'a specification. Y My invention relatesto electrical heaters particularly of the type "used in heating railway passenger cars, trolley cars; etc, and has for its object to provide a heater of such, type which shall be simple and economical in construction, and will permit of the ready removal of a heating unit from the casing and the insertion of a fresh heating unit therein without withdrawing the car from service and consequently without the delay usually attendant upon this operation. and the loss of service of the car and eXpense connected therewith.

My invention is illustrated in connection with a heater of the type wherein a core A is provided which is formed of insulating material usually such as porcelain, and has a spi"al groove which receives the helically coiled resistance wire B which is the heating element. The heater is provided with a central core C usually a metallic rod which fulfils the function of holding the heater together when such function is desired and when the heater is used in multiple pro vides a convenient return wire. Such multiple arrangement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but my invention is equally applicable to a heater connected in series.
My invention comprises the use of supports whici are located within the casing and which receive and hold the heating units both by friction and preferably also by spring action. These supports or brackets are in electrical connection with the feed and return wires respectively and as the heating unit is inserted in them contact is made between the said connections to the feed and return wires and like connections to theheating wires on the core, whereby the in-- sertion of the heating unit closes the circuit through the resistance wire. The particular manner in which. the invention is constructed as illustrated comprises a spring clip or yoke D for each of the heating units. The heater herein illustrated is adapted to receive two heating units. lhese are identical in construction and are connected in the same manner to the electrical conductors, and may be used one at a time or both. The connection or" only one of them will be described and this description will also apply to the other one. This yoke D has means whereby when the heating unit is inserted therein connection will be made between the main wire and a terminal of the heating wire on the heating unit. A convenient way of making such connection is by "forming the yoke D of conducting material such as spring brass and by having an eye E therein to which the feed wire F may be attached. The heating unit, which as a whole I shall designate as G is provided at one end with a terminal for the heating wire B, and this terminal may well be in the form of a band H which surrounds the heating unit adjacent the end thereof and is electrically connected to the resistance wire 13 at I. This connection I will obviously be made in such manner as to permit the heating unit to be inserted when a band H is employed with any portion of the band in contact with the spring yoke D so that no care need be exercised in inserting the same. Obviously if a different kind of terminal to the resistance wire than the band H were employed, and if a different kind of terminal than the spring yoke itself to the feed wire F were employed, care might have to be employed in assembling to bring the respective terminals to a contact. The resistance wire B, in the construction shown, is connected at its opposite end to the rod C in a suitable manner, so that the current shall be returned therethrough.
