Closing Flush-Valves, o'fwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'self closing flush valves, and is primarily intended for use in connection with water-closets, but may also be used in any place where a timed self closing valve is desired in connection with a liquid under pressure, and the objects of my invention are: 1st, to provide a valve of the character indicated that can be opened by a manually operated lever and closed by the action of the liquid passing through the device 2nd, that will operate equally well in connection with water systems of varying pressures wlthoutnecessitatmg any alterations oradj'ustments of the mechanism; 3rd,
that will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easily installed, and one in which the liquid can be timed to run for any period of time required.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is tov be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings from 1 to 4 inclusive, 1 indicates a portion of a water closet to which casing 2 is secured by connection 3, the water supply in this instance being from above. Casing 2 is formed as shownin Fig. 2, having a worm 4 positioned in its lower portion and mounted in bearings 5 and 6 respectively,

and having a pinion rigidly mounted on the 11 indicates a valve in position on said valve seat 10 and having a stem 12 vertically mounted in bearing v13. The lower end of valve stem 12 is connected by a link 14 and arm 15 to rod 16 which is mounted in bearings 17 and 18 respectively and provided with .a lever arm 19. In a compartment, as 24, formed in the back of case 2 are revolubly mounted. two gears 20 and 21 respectively, gear 20 being driven by pinion 7 and gear 21 being driven by pinion 22 mounted on the shaft of gear 20. A plate 23 is used as a closure for compartment24. Secured to. gear 21 is a hub 25 having an ear 26 projecting therefrom to which is pivoted a weighted bar 27. On the innerside of the rim of ,gear 21is secured a pin 28. These several parts are used inoperating my self closing valve in the following manner. Lever arm 19 is "normally positioned as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 with valve 11 closed and link 14 and arm 15 in the position shown in solid lines, the water being under "pressure and acting against valve 11 and tending ,to keep'these parts in the relative positionsshown. When'handle 29 is forced downward lever arm 19 takes the a is forced upwardagainst the pressure ofthe water. 'Valve' 11 is now locked in an open position as indicated at 11, plug 30 in the I wall of. casing 2 preventing arm 15 from turning farther back than is desired. As the water now passes down and through casing 2 it causes worm 4 to revolve at a speed determined-by thepressure of the water and the shape of said worm, thus turning pinion 7 gear 20, pinion 22 and gear 21 in the directions indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. Weighted arm 27 would normally hang as shown in dotted lines at 31, but as gear 21 revolves pin 28 engages said weighted arm 27 and carriesit upward as shown at 32. When arm 27 passes the vertical position it falls downwardupon theeXtreme end of lever arm 19 so that when pin 28 again engages the same, it will force the end of said lever arm downward thereby turning link lei and arm 15 backward past the dead center line 38, whereupon the force of the water acting against valve 11 will snap the same down upon its seat 10, lever arm 19 taking its normal position as above described. In order that all leakage at bearings 18 and 6 may be carried away, a conduit 2" is formed in casing 2 the same discharging into closet 1 as shown. Washer 16 is placed on rod 16, and washer P is placed on the shaft of worm 4: so that any water spurting through bearings 18 and 6 respectively will be stopped and will be made to drip into said conduit 2 and carried away as described. In this embodiment of my invention the water supply enters from the top and two gears are used, but it is evident that the device could be adapted for use where the water supply enters from below, and also could be adapted for use with one gear.
In Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 I have shown one method of constructing and fitting my device where the water supply is from below, and I have also shown here but one gear. The operation in this construction is the same as in the one above described except that lever arm 19 does not engage weighted arm 27 directly but has a rod 34 pivotally connected thereto by means of link 35, rod 3 1- having a hook as 36 formed on the lower end thereof which engages said weighted arm 27 and operates the valve mechanism as hereinbefore described. In this embodiment weighted arm 27 and pin 28 are secured to the one gear 37 which is driven directly by pinion 7, although a plurality of gears may be used as hereinbefore described.
It is of course understood that stuiiing boxes may be used at bearings 18 and 6 re spectively instead of washers 16 and P, in which case draining conduit 2 would not be required. Also while a worm 4 is shown in the drawings, any mechanical device that can be positioned in casing 2 and that will revolve under pressure of the liquid passing therethrough and thus rotate the shaft and operate pinion 7, will answer equally well.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
1. A device of the character described,
comprising a casing having a receiving arm and a discharge arm, a propeller revolubly mounted in said discharge arm, a valve operatively positioned in said receiving arm, manually operative means for opening said valve, and mechanism driven by said propeller for closing said valve at a predetermined period, said means and mechanism comprising a gear operatively connected. to said propeller, a weighted arm pivotally mounted on the hub of said gear, a pin se cured in the rim of said gear so positioned as to engage said weighted arm, a rod revolubly mounted in said casing and having an arm attached thereto, a link pivotally at tached to said arm and said valve, a lever arm secured to one end of said rod and so positioned that one end thereof will engage said weighted arm at a predetermined period, said means acting to hold said valve in the open position until said mechanism closes the same.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a casing having a receiving arm and a discharge arm, a propeller revolubly mounted in said discharge arm, a valve operatively positioned in said receiving arm, manually operative means for opening said valve, and mechanism driven by said propeller for closing said valve at a predetermined period, said means and mechanism comprising a gear operatively connected to said propeller, a weighted arm pivotally mounted on the hub of said gear, a pin sccured in the rim of said gear so positioned as to engage said weighted arm, a rod revolubly mounted in said casing and having an; arm attached thereto, a link pivotally attached to said arm and said valve, a device connected to said rod and so positioned as to engage said weighted arm at a predetermined period, said means acting to hold said valve in the open position until said mechanism closes the same.
