ARTHUR J. BRIGGS, OF SYRACUSE,-NEW YORK, ASSIG'NOR TO THE VANNETTE BOBBINLESS SEWING- IVIACHINE COMPANY, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK, A
GOEPORATIO'N OF NEW YORK. a
snwrne-naonrnn.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Ap lication filed Octoher 17, 1913. Serial No. 795,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTH R J. Bxrecs, citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to sewing machines and has more special reference to improvements in the operating mechanism of sewing machines of the character disclosed in Letters Patent #875,? 51, issued Jan. 7 1908, in which the lever connection between the upper and lower driving shafts, which is arranged within the hollow vertical arm of the machine frame, has a movable fulcrum controlled in its movement by pivoted con necting links. These links, in the machine of the aforesaid patent, were pivoted on fixed studs within the machine arm, and because of the inaccessibility of the parts in such location considerable difficulty, with attendant loss of time and expense, was ex perienced in the assembling of the parts.
To avoid such difficulty has been the main object of my present invention and this I accomplish by providing an auxiliary frame for supporting the fulcrum links within the machine arm which is designed for detachable connection to the main frame at an easily accessible point'exterior of said arm.
In this way the lever, its fulcrum connections and the auxiliary frame may be assembled as a complete unit separate from the machine frame and then be secured in position by the attachment of the auxiliary frame to the main frame.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown only so much of a sewing machine as is necessary to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the arm of a sewing machine embodying my invention, showing in elevation the lever connection between the upper and lower shafts, its fulcrum connections,
' I and the auxiliary frame supporting said fulframe in suitable bearings are the upper and lower driving shafts 6, and 16. The lower or secondary driving shaft 16 is operated from the upper or primary driving shaft 6 through the medium of a lever or pitman 7 5 which at its upper end connects with a crank 76 in the shaft 6 and at its lower end carries a stud 77 engaging a block 78 slidably supported in a grooved crank-arm 79 on the shaft 16. At a point centrally between its ends the lever 7 5 is also connected with a fulcrum bar 80 by means of a stud 81 on one part entering a corresponding seat or opening in the other and which said fulcrum bar 80 at its opposite ends and at points equi-distant from its center fulcrum is pivotally connected with two links 83, 83, which are respectively pivoted on fixed studs, 84:, 8 1, located at opposite sides of the lever 75. These several parts in so far as described are substantially the same in construction and operation as the correspondingly indicated parts in the aforesaid patent. In accordance with my present invention, however, and for the purpose hereinbefore referred to, the link supporting pivots or studs 84: are carried by an auxiliary frame 85 detachably connected to the main frame at a point exterior of its hollow arm, this auxiliary frame being designed for location within said arm as shown and having at its lower end laterally-projecting ears or extensions 86 for engagement with the lower edge of the arm to which they are secured by suitable fastening means, such as the screws 87. I
What I claim is 1. In a sewing machine, the combination with the main frame thereof comprising the usual bed-plate and a bracket arm thereon having a hollow vertical portion, and upper and lower shafts supported by said frame, of a connecting lever between said shafts located in thehollow vertical portion of the frame, a fulcrum for said lever, pivotal links connecting with and controlling the position of said fulcrum, and an auxiliary frame supporting said links and being de tachably connected to the main frame, said auxiliary frame and the lever with its fulcrum connections being associated as a complete unit for attachment to and detachment from the main frame.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination With the frame thereof comprising the usual bed-plate and a bracket arm thereon having a hollow vertical portion, and upper and lower shafts supported by said frame, of a connecting lever between said shafts located inthe hollow vertical portion of the frame, a fulcrum for said lever, pivotal links connecting'with and controlling the position of said fulcrum, and an auxiliary frame c0mprising a vertically ranging part extending into sald hollo-W portion of the mam frame for supporting said fulcrum links and at its Qopie's of this patent may be obtained for unit for attachment to and detachment from the main frame.
Signed at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, this 14th day of October A. D. 1913.
ARTHUR J. BRIGGS.
