EDWARD JAMESE KENNEDY, OFSAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
RACK.
To all whom t may concern.' Be it known that If, EDWARD JAMES KEN- NEDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the countyl ofSan Diego and StateA of California, have invented certa1n` new and useful" Improvements in Racks, of'which thef'oll'owing is a A further object is to provide rmeans for enabling quick and accurate adjustment" to any desired location.
A further object is to provide means for attaching any of several types of arms or hooks, thereby adapting the device for use in different locations, such as the kitchen, hall, bedroom, etc., of a dwelling; and further objects are to provide such a device which is simple in construction and use, very strong, compact when not in use, composed of few parts not likely to get out of order to require repair, and very inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like reference characters are used to designate like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fragment of a door or window frame with my nvention mounted thereon and partly in section; Fig. 2 is a plan viewv thereof; Fig. 8 is a. detached view of one of the clamping members which I employ; Fig. /1 is a similar view of another clamping member; Fig. 5 is a view of the base plate of the device, in one form; Fig. 6 is a detached view of a. cam lever which I employ; Fig. 7 is a front view of a modification over the form shown in the preceding figures; and Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
In Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, I have shown one preferred form of embodiment of my invention, comprising a base plate 9 having two serrated flanges 10 and 11 at the upper and lower edges thereof, respectively, two spaced integral loops 12 at the front thereof, and an integral post 13 at the rear thereof serving as a pivot for a lever 14 having a cam face 15.

Serial No. 5,658.
Slidably mounted on the base plate 9, at the end opposite the post 13, is a clamping memberk 16 which is composed of a vertical member 17 having two forwardly directed arms 18 and 19 providedeach, with a wedge shaped lug 20 projecting over the serrated flanges 10l and 11 and adapted'to engage therewith in any desired position along the length thereof, said vertical member having a central lug 21" adapted to bear against the rear of the base plate' and thus insure, when strain is placed on the vertical member 17, the engagement" of the lugs 20; with the respective serr'atedlanges. Also slidably carried by the base plate is a supplementaly clamping member 22 composed of a vertical member similar to 17 and having two for wardly directed arms 23 provided, each, with a lug 24 adapted to rest on the corresponding flange 10 or 11. In placing the device in position, as on a door or window frame, the clamping member 16 is moved outwardly to permit the introduction of the door or window frame between the clamping members 16 and 22, the lever 141 meanwhile being in raised position; the clamping member 22 is then pressed against the correspending edge of the frame, the clamping member 16 moved to bear against the other edge of the frame, and the lever drawn downwardly, thus forcing the clamping member 22 toward the clamping member 16 and locking the base plate to the frame, or to a post or other suitable support; in this connection, it will be noted that the lever 14 maintains the parts in locked position by gravity, this being important as jarring serves to bind the device more tightly in position.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown a casting of segmental bell form at 25 having two rear lugs 26 adapted to enter the respective loop 12 to connect said bell casting with the base plate 9, detachably, and said casting is provided with a plurality of radially arranged slots adapted, each, to receive the inner end of abar or rod 27 in the manner clearly shown at the left of Fig. 1, the general arrangement of said bars being shown in Fig. 2; it will be noted that the said casting is centrally recessed so as not to touch the base plate except for a predetermined distance at the ends of said casting adjacent its lugs 26, thereby not covering a supplemental loop 28 which I may arrange centrally of said base plate.
This loop 28 is adapted to receive a block carrying a plurality of arms, as
indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 7, to serveV as a hall-rack, for hats and coats, either with or without the drier arms 27, for it will be readily apparent that I may remove the ymeans areunchanged in this form.
It will thus be seen that my device may be moved from place to place at will, and
may be used for different purposes, and, while I have shown certain details of conn struction, I do not desire to limit myself thereto, as changes thereover may and probably will suggest themselves to meet different conditions.
Having fully described my invention,
. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the class described, comprising a base-plate provided with serrated flanges at the upper and lower edges thereof, an adjustable clamping member engaged .with said flanges, a slidable clamping member engaged with said base-plate, a lever for forcing the latter member toward the former to clamp a xed support therebetweem and arms carried by said base-plate adapted to have articleshung thereon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
