Description
I. KORETZKY.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC LIGHT APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29, 1914.
being known as flash lights.
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIOE.
ISRAEL KORETZKY. OF NEW YORK, N; Y., ASSIGNOR o LEWIS J. ivtomusolm'os NEWYOBK,N.Y.-
PORTABLE ELECTRIC LIGHTS To (/7/ /mm [tn/(1y concern:
Be it known that I. Isnxni. Komrrzin'. a subject of the Czar of- Russia. residing at New York. in'the county of New York and State of'Xew York. have invented certain new.and useful Improvements in Portable Electric Lights. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable electric lights. and particularly those of small dimensions and convenient shape for carrying in the pocket and for carrying about in the hand when'in use. said lights commonly In devices of this character the battery is separable from the casing-which carries the lamp. and has exposed contacts which make connection with thelamp terminals. one of these connections being permanently maintained while the battery is in the casing-and the other connection a manually operable circuit-closer which makes connection with an exposed terminal of the battery. The push buttons and other circuit-closers connnonly employed are only adapted for temporarily closing the circuit so that the light can be used for only a short period and will immediately go out ,as soon. as the push button or other device is released. Other difiiculties that are experienced with the ordi nary type of circuit closer mentioned are. that the actual effecting of a contact at the desired moment is uncertain. the contact is liable to accidentally become closed and remain closed. without the knowledge of the user. thereby exhausting the battery. and also some of these circuit-closers are so delicately constructed as to become impaired at the slightest provocation.
My invention provides a portable electric light of the type mentioned which has embodied therein a simple. yet effective circuit-closer which is absolutely positive in its operation. easy to manipulate and is adapted to be positioned so that the circuit will remain closed if it is so desired. thereby enabling one to use the light for an extended period of time without continually maintaining pressure on the button or other means for operating the circuit closer.
Referring to the drawings annexedhereto and forming a part of this specification. and in which I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section and circuit-closer.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'the circuit-closer being in the open position.
Fig.2 is a front elevation view partly in section showing the circuit-closer in the closed position. Fig. 3 is a view showing the detailsof the circuit-closer. Fig. 1': is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 2 but showing a modified form of circuit-closer. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of spring con tact device.
Referring to the drawings: The casing l is provided at the top thereof with a threaded socket 2 adapted to receive and retain in place the usual type of incandescent electric light bulb while the bottom of the said casing 1 is provided with a hinge latch door 4 which is adapted to retain the bat tery in place within the casing when the said door 4 is closed. The battery 5 is of the usual type having the exposed terminals 6 and T the former being adapted to form a permanent contact with the terminal S on the bulb, and the latter being adapted to be engaged by the circuit-closer to light the lamp bulb.
The circuit-closer 9 is disposed as is usual in the end of the casing 1 in a suitable position to engage the exposed terminal 7 of the battery. and is composed of the leaf spring member 10 suitably secured to the casing l at. 11 by solder or screws. The leaf spring member 10 has. disposed at its upper end directly opposite to the said terminal 7. a threaded boss 12 adapted to receive the push button 13 having the threaded shank H. the end of which is adapted to engage the terminal-7 when the push button 13 is pushed in or when the said button is turned so as to screw the said shank through the. said boss into permanent engagement with the terminal 7. Thus it will be evident that when it only desired to light the light for a short period of time it is only necessary to simply push the button 13 in the usual manner. however if it is desired to use the light for an extended period of time the simple operation of screwing the shank 14; against the terminal 7 serves to keep the light lighted without maintaining. constantpressure on the button 13 extending through the opening 15 in the casing 1.
In Fig. 'i' T have illustrated a 1nodification of the circuit-closer in that-T have provided the shank 1-! with a collar 16 which is of larger diameter than the opening 15 in the casing 1 thereby providing against the Patented July 13, 1915. Application filed June 29. 1914. Serial No. 848.006. I
accidental unscrewing of the said shank ll completely from the boss 1'2.j-in which case it might easily become lost or misplaced.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific construction and a1 rangement of parts herein illustrated and described, but may resort to such modifications as fall Within the scope of my claim.
I claim:
'ln a-portable electric light, a casing contaii'iing a battery llzulllg contacts, said cas ing having apush button opening, a spring contact comprising a spring mounted on the inner wall of said casing and having a threaded aperture adjacent the opening in said casing, a push button having a threaded shank fitting in said aperture and having a knob projecting through said opening, and a collar fixed on said shank between said casing and spring and larger than said push button opening whereby said push button is prevented from beingcompletely unscrewed and removed from said casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
