The ob'ects of my invention are to provide in conjunction with the discharging head of a brick machine, improvedmeans for so rougheningor treatingthe surfaces of the body of clay discharged from the machine, as to impart a desirable ornamental appearance thereto.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head of a brick machine, showing my improved roughening means adjustably supported in connection therewith, Fig. 2 is a detail view showing a portion of one of the wire cables which I employ, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a portion of said cable at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating portions of two of the strands of the cable, Fig. 5 comprises a view in elevation and a cross section of a modified form of wire which may be employed, and, Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective illustrating a portion of a modified form of roughening device.
1 represents the head or clay discharging end of an ordinary brick machine and 2 the end or die plate thereof. This die plate is formed with a central forwardly projecting oblong nose 3, through the opening of which the body of clay, which is afterward severed at intervals to form the brick, passes from the machine. On opposing sides of the nose or outlet 3, the die plate is formed with lateral extensions 4 in the outer face of each of which are formed upper and lower parallel guide ribs 5. the remaining arm thereof extending forwardly as shown at 6. These bars are bolted in connection with the die plate 2, the attaching-bolt of one of the bars, however, passing loosely through a slotted opening 7 in said bar on the outer side of which the bolt, which is indicated at 7 receives a nuts.
As. shown in the drawing, I provide the plate 1 toward each' of its ends with upwardly and downwardly extending members 2 and on the face of the die plate 2 and said upper and lower extensions thereof, I provide parallel guide ribs 9 and within each pair of these ribs is supported the vertical arm or member of an angular bar 10, each of said bars being secured by a bolt against the face of the die plate. These bolts which are indicated at 11, pass through slotted openings 10 in the bars 10, thereby permitting of a vertical adjustment of. the bars between the ribs 9. Extending loosely through an opening in each of the outturned end portions 6' of the bars 6, is a screw rod 12, upon the outer threaded end of which is provided a suitable form of nut 13. The inner ends of the rods 12 have connected therewith the opposite ends of a horizontal wire, rod or cable member 14. In a like manner I cause to pass through each of the outturned arms of each of the bars 10 a wire or cable holding rod 15, the outer end of which is engaged by a hand nut 16. The opposing upper and lower rods 15 are connected by vertical cable on rod members 17 the latter extending, as shown, in front of the outlet opening of the nose or nozzle 3 adjacent to the outer sides thereof, while the cable member 14: extends in front of said opening horizontally and adjacent to the upper side thereof.
As in my said former construction, the wire or cable members 14 and 17 may each be formed of two or more wires 18 twisted or braided together in the form of a cable. In my present construction, however, it will be observed by reference to the drawingthat those portions of the cables which are adjacent to or opposite the discharge opening of the nose 3, have each of their wires provided with rigid projecting and preferably pointed roughening fingers 19, these projections or fingers being arranged at suitable distances one from the other.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have shown a single wire 18*, which might be substituted for the cables heretofore described or which might be utilized as one of the wires of a cable. This Wire, however, differs from the wires 18 in the fact that it is formed by imparting a desirable twist to a square wire or rod, or a rod which is square in cross section.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have shown a second modification, which comprises a twisted bar or strip 18 and which, as will be understood, may be substituted for the cable construction heretofore described.
As will be readily understood, the cables are so arranged with reference to the discharge opening of the head, as to engage both the opposing vertical sides of the clay ribbon as it leaves the machine head, and the upper face or surface of said ribbon. In my former construction heretofore referred to, the roughening of the clay ribbon was dependent Wholly upon the engagement of the wires therewith, but in the present instance, the clay is subjected to the additional action of the fingers 19, all of which tends to impart to the surfaces acted upon, a rough or I shaggy appearance, which at the present day is much desired by the users-of brick for building purposes. It is obvious that the cables may be tightened or loosened as o desired, by manipulating the nose 13 or 16.
What I claim, is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a brick making machine comprising a die through which clay is discharged, of a member having a threadlike or twisted form supported in front of the discharge opening of said machine, said member having fingers projecting at intervals therefrom.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a brick making machine comprising a die through which clay is discharged, of a wire member comprising two or more twisted strands of wire, said wire member supported in front and adjacent to the discharge opening of said machine and having projecting from its strands fingers adapted to engage the surface of the clay ribbon as it passes from the die.
