To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE S. CORBEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of IVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gromets, of which the following' is a specification. reference being had to the accompanying drawings This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gromets and more particularly to an adjustable gromet which is adapted for use in co-nnection with sailors hats.y the main object of the present invention being the provision of an adjustable gromet which can be quickly and readily applied to a sailors hat, whereby to yieldably retain the crown thereof in its eX- tended position and, at the same time, is so constructed that it may be readily adjusted to various sizes.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved gromet, the outline of a sailors hat being illustrated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, illustrating the manner of connecting the ends of the gromet; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional viewbtaken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a split ring 1 formed of any yieldable material and inclosed within a suitable casing 2 which is formed of interwoven thread or any other suitable material. One end of the ring is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 3, while the other end thereof is provided with a lug 4. formed upon the inner face thereof and adapted to be inserted within any one of the openings 3, whereby the size of the ring may be varied so that the gromet can be applied to heads of various sizes. The ends of the ring are securely held in position by means of the sleeves 5 which are mounted forv sliding .movement upon the ends of the ring adjacent each end thereof and adapted to engage over the free ends after they have been arranged in close relation.

In applying my improved gromet to a hat, the ring 1 is adjusted to the size desired bv bringing the ends of the ring in close relation and moving the ends to bring the proper openings in alinement with each other. The lug 4 is inserted within one of the openings 3 in the opposite end of the ring, whereby to securely retain the ends of the ring in their adjusted position. The free ends are then retained in place by means of the sleeves 5, which are engaged over the ends to hold them against outward movement.

It will be noted that the ring l is inclosed within the casing Q., which may be formed of any desirable material to protect the material of the hat from being cut by the sharp edges of the ring.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that I have provided a simple and durable gromet which can be quickly and readily applied to any well known form of sailor`s hat, whereby to yieldablv retain the crown thereof in its extended position.

My device, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without sacrificing any of the novel features, or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described this invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is:-

l. A gromet including a split ring having spaced openings formed in one end thereof, a lug carried by the opposite end of the ring and adapted to be inserted within any one of the openings to retain the ends in an adjusted position, and loosely mounted sleeves upon said ends adapted to engage the same and retain them against lateral movement.
