i sheets or plates are weather-proofed by caps embracing flanges on: the adjacent sheets, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the weather-prooing means as hereinafter set forth.
In the'drawings, the gure is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the car roof to which my improvement is applied.
A is a carline and B a purlin ot' the roof I frame,
C are roofing sheets or plates extendingr between carlines and having upstanding edge flanges D. E is a weather-proofing cap embracing the carline and flanges and bearing upon said sheets to form a weather' joint therewith.
In certain constructions that have hereto fore been used the joint between the cap E and plate C is formed by laterally extending foot flanges. on the cap that rests upon sheets. The cap in addition to its function of weather-proofing the joint, also serves to hold the sheet down upon the roof frame, but not to prevent the independent adjust` ment of said sheet under the weaving and torsional stress produced in the roof frame when the car is in service. Inasmuch as the cap is formed of metal the bea-ring' portion thereof upon the sheet during the relative movement of the parts will cause a rubbing or abrasion of the surfaces which is objectionable. With the present construction the contact of metal to metal is avoided by providing the weather caps with a non-metallic facing which constitutes the bearing' on the sheet.l Thus as shown, the caps C- are provided with laterally extending portions F above the plane of the rooing sheets terminating in down-turned portionsG. In the angle formed by these portions F and Gr a non-metallic facing H is secured, this being preferably a wooden strip secured by suitable means such as the laterally extending bolts or rivets I engaging the flange-G. The strip H' will maintain a weatherproofing joint with the surface of the sheet as well as to retain the latter in position upon the car frame, while permittingfreedom of move.
ment in the plane of the sheet. This movement will not however, cause any abrasion of the sheet on account of the soft nature of the facing material used.
If desired, a groove J may be arranged to extend longitudinally in the lower face of for permitting the escape of any water forcing` through the joint between said strip and the sheet.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
l. In a car roof, the combination with a roof frame, of roofing sheets or plates independently adjustably supported upon said frame, weather-proong capsl for the joint between sheets embracingupstandingflanges of the adjacent edges thereof and constituting a means for holding said sheets down;
In testimony whereof I ahx myv signature in presence of two witnesses.-
DAVID W. l HAWKSWORTH.
