WIRE-STRETCHEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
mama June a2, 1915..
Application filed July 26, 1913. Serial No, 781,440.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BURRELL L. Kim), a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuscola, in the county of Taylor, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in wire stretchers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will effectually stretch the wire and hold the same stretched during the stapling operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the same will effectually stretch the wire upon very little exertion upon the part of the operator.
With these and other objects in view, this.
invention resides in the novel. features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described. claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line 4.-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a bar having formed upon one end a yoke 2, which is adapted to engage a post and is provided with a chain 3 to hold the same in engagement therewith. The other end of the bar 1 is provided with a socket 1, which is designed to receive a crow bar 5, the same being retained in its socket by the set screw 6. and serves to support the bar 1 in proper relation to the post.
The bar 1 is provided with an off-set 7 which is provided with a recess 8, and in which is fixed a circular casing 9, the purpose of which will appear later.
' A bracket 10 is carried by the. bar 1 and is arranged opposite the off-set 7. and supports one end of the shaft 11, said shaft being passed through the bar 1 and has its other end supported in the off-set 7 said end terminating in a crank handle 12.
Fixed to the shaft 11 is a drum 13, one flange of which is provided with ratchet teeth 14:, which are adapted to be engaged by the gravity pawl 15, said pawl being pivotally connected between the bar 1 and offset 7. Also fixed to the shaft 11 and between the bar 1 and bracket 10 is a drum 16, the same being provided with spirally formed grooves 17 which are engaged by the chain 18, said chain being fixed to the drum and is passed between the guide rollers 19 which are supported upon the bar 1. The outer end of the chain is provided with a suitable wire clamp 20.
A circular casing 21 is supported by the bar 1 and contains a pulley 22, the groove 23 of which being engaged by the rope 24, which has one end fixed to the drum 13, the free end of said rope being grasped by the operator, and when strain is applied thereto, the shaft 11 will be rotated, thereby winding the chain 18 upon the drum 16, thus stretching the wire. the pawl 15 serving to hold the said shaft against rotation. After the wire has been stretched and stapled, the pawl is operated to disengage the drum 13, whereupon the same is rotated through the medium of the shaft 11, thus winding the rope upon the drum 13 and unwinding the chain from the drum 16.
What is claimed is A wire stretching device comprising an elongated bar adapted to be connected to a stationary post, a revolubly mounted drum on said bar remote from the end thereof, a chain secured to said drum adapted to be secured to the end of a wire and to be wound on the drum, a shaft secured to said drum and extending through the said bar and terminating in a crank handle, a pulley secured to said shaft, a second pulley secured to the bar in spaced relation to the first mentioned pulley, the said pulley being relatively smaller than the first mentioned pulley, a flexible member extending around and secured to the periphery of the first mentioned pulley and passing over the second mentioned pulley, means for preventing the displacement of the said flexible member from either of the pulleys, the said crank handle drum, and means for preventing the accibeing constructed and arranged so that force dental retrograde movement of the drum. 10 may be applied directly to the drum and the In testimony whereof, I affix my signasaid flexible member, and pulleys being con tune, in the presence of two Witnesses.
' structed and arranged so that power applied BURRELL L. KIDD.
to the end of the said flexible member Will \Vitnesses: be increased according to the proportion of C. M. MoCULLoUGH, the pulleys and thus more readily rotate the W. J. TAYLOR.
