Description

ENOGH WAITE, 0F FRANKLIN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, TO HIMSELF AND FRANCIS B. BAY, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 114,373. dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FABRICS FROM WASTE LEATHER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan of the same.
To all persons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, ENOCH WAITE, of Franklin, of
the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts,-
lows
In the production of the said new manufacture I take the refuse or cuttings of buckskin or soft leather as used by glovers in the making of gloves, and subject it to the action of a common shoddy-picker, thereby disintegrating and tearing it so as to prepare it for being carded or subjected to the action of a carding-engine such as used for carding wool or shoddy.
After having thus picked or torn in pieces the scraps or pieces of glove-leather or buckskin in order to remove the dirt or extraneous matter therefrom by means of the picker, as described, the mass of fibrous material is to be run through the carding-engine and be carded thereby, whereby it will be still further re-- duced, so that the filaments composing it will be separated from one another and so laid together as to enable the product to be felted by a felting machine, and to be combined with wool or with various-other fibrous materials, and felted or spun.
From the above it will be seen that I have discovcred a new method of utilizing soft leather scraps, or what is termed the waste leather of glovers, and of producing a material new in the arts, and capable of being used to great advantage either in the manufacture of felted or woven fabrics.
What I claim as a new manufacture and of my invention, capable of use as described, is-
The product or material as made of glovers leather, picked and carded as set forth. I
Witnesses: ENOOH WAITE.
