APPLICATION FILED mamas. I914.
Patented June 15,1915.
:1 n. rrn'xnn'ronr, or cmcnee, rams.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Fatented dune a TWI Application filed March 23, 1914. Serial No. 826,659.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. PINKER- TON, a citizen of the resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specificat1on.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes, and more especially to folding boxes, and has for itsobject the provision of an improved construction of this character provided with means for closing the same whereby the insertion of articles therein is greatly facilitated.
A further object is to provide improved means for securing parts of a folding box together.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention and shown in open position, and Fig. 2, a difl'erent view showing the box closed.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a shallow folding box 3 which is provided with flaps of any usual or desired construction for closing the end 4:. The opposite end of the box is providedwith closing flaps 5 and 6 and a triangular cover portion 7 joined to the top of the box by a creased line 8 extending inwardly and transversely from the corner 9 to the as to permit the cover 7 to be swung upwardly as indicated in Fig. 1. The cover 7 is provided with a flap 10 adapted to fold over the corresponding end of the box when the cover is in closed-position and hold flaps 5 and 6 in' close relation, said flap 10being provided with a tongue 11 which is slit longitudinally at 12 and is adapted to be inserted in a slit 13. in the bottom of the box to lock the flap 10 and the cover 7 in closed position. The slit 12 in tongue 11 permits collapsing of said tongue to'a certain degree to permit insertion-in the slit 13. At its free end said cover 7 is provided with a flap 14 adapted to fit over the corresponding side of the box Q) and provided with a tongue 15 United States, and a perspective opposite side of the box, so
. adapted to adapted to enter a slit 16 in the correspond- 1ng box side to further secure the cover 7 in position. Flap I l is joined to flap 10 by means of a diagonally creased fla 17 whlch further increases the strength 0 the connection.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrymg my'invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. T, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what 1[ claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A box comprising a rectangular body and a triangular shaped cover therefor joined to the top of the box by a crease extending inwardly and transversely of the box from one corner thereof; a flap on said cover adapted to extend over the corresponding end of said box; and a tongue on said flap, there being a slit in the bottom of said box to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
2. A box comprising a rectangular body and a triangular shaped cover therefor; a flap on said cover adapted to extend over the corresponding end of said box; a tongue on said flap, there being a slit in the bottom of said box to receive said tongue; a flap on said cover adapted to extend over the corresponding side of said box; and a tongue on said last mentioned flap, there being a slit in the corresponding side of said box to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
' 3. A box comprising a body and a triangular shaped cover therefor joined to the top of the box by a crease extending inwardly and transversely of the box from one corner thereof; a flap on said cover adapted to extend over the corresponding end of said box; a tongue on said fla there being a slit in the bottom of said box to receive said ton extend over the corresponding side of said box; and a tongue on said last mentioned fia there being a slit in the eorresponding side of said box to receive said tongue, substantially as described.
4. A box comprising a rectangular body; a triangular shaped cover therefor, said gue; a flap on said cover cover being hinged at one-side hut free on' In testin ony whereof I have signed my the other two sides; securing flaps on each name to'thls specification in the presence of of the other sides of said cover; end a secur- 5W0 subscribin witnesses.
ing tongue on each of said flaps, there being ED ARD E. PINKERTON. 5 corresponding interlocking shts in the box Witnesses: adapted to receive said tongues, substen- J OSHUA R. H. Poms,
tie/11y as described. HELEN F. Lmms.
