To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of lVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in DrivingClutches, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a driving clutch which may be used toadvantage in connection with motor boats, hoisting apparatus, or other like installations, as shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly set forth in the following specification and claims.
This application is a division of the application for patent filed by me February 3, 1913, Serial No. 745,783. 7
The object of my invention is to produce an efficient and inexpensive driving clutch,*dispensing entirely with the trains of gears usually employed in devices of this character,-the construction being such that the driving shaft may be coupled with a propeller shaft of a boat (for example) in line therewith.
Other advantages and improvements will be hereafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims;
In the drawings accompanying this specification :Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through the clutch mechanism-With parts in elevationtaken on the parting line of the inclosing case and showing the mechanism coupled to provide for a forward movement of the propeller blades (not shown). Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is'a side elevation of a detail adjacent to the shifting fork. Fig. 4: 'is a cross-sectional view on line H of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of a detail with the several rolls of the clutch mechanism in rolling driving contact with the cone carried by the propeller shaft as in reversing the propeller blades. Fig. 6 is a crosssectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view on line 7 7 of Fig. 1. Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings :A indicates a driving shaft journaled at its forward end in a suitable bearing in the inclosing case B which is divided into two parts longitudinally, and bolted together in line with the driving shaft, The rear' end of the shaft is preferably reduced in diameter and housed in a bushingc inserted in the propeller shaft C, as indicated in Fig. l of the drawings.
C denotes a collar keyed to the propeller shaft in turn bolted to a similar collar carried by the shaft of the propeller blades (not shown).
C is a disk propeller shaft lar cone C v c is a thrust bearing between the shoulder a of the driving shaft and the disk C and 0 is a similar thrust bearing between the collar C and the projecting hub b of the bearing formed in the inclosing case B to receive the propeller shaft C.
D indicates an annular shaft sleeved on the shaft A provided with a slot at a? for the passage of a key A carried by the shaft A, the slot being of sufiicient length to admit of a longitudinal movement of the annular shaft along the shaft A, with which it is caused to rotate by the key A.
E denotes a cone-shaped ring housed within the cone C and keyed as indicated at e to the annular shaft 1).
E is a movable key supported in the wall of the ring E adapted to be thrust outward into a key-way 6, provided in the cone C through the action of the spring E F is" a cone, of relatively different taper to the annular cone C sleeved on the annular shaft D, and provided witha keyway f to receive the projecting key A carried by thedriving shaft, whereby the cone F is caused to rotate therewith while being adapted for longitudinal movement with respect to the shaft.
F is a projecting sleeve preferably integral with the cone F, formed with a flange F channeled to receive the friction rolls G carried by the shifting fork G. At F the end of the sleeve F is given a substantially preferably integral with the to which is bolted an annucone-shaped formation with an annular recess 7 adapted to receive the fingers h of the dogs H.- The dogs H are pivoted to the collar I which in turn is carried by the annular shaft D.
f is a port in the cone F through which oil may be delivered to the periphery of the annular shaft D upon which the cone F is designed to slide.
G indicates a transverse shaft journaled in the frame A to which the shifting fork is keyed. g
G is a lever keyed to the shaft G for manually operating it.
J denotes a collar pinned to the driving shaft A, provided with an inclined flange against which the fingers h of the dog H bear.
K is a helical spring sleeved on the driving shaft A, one end of which bears against the collar J, and the other against the end of the annular shaft D.
L indicates a supporting ring provided with ears Z pierced for the passage of bolts Z by which the ring is secured to the projecting lugs I) of the inclosing case B.
M denotes an adjustable annular frame or cage sleeved over the cone F and pro vided with a projecting hub M extending into the ring L.
L is a set-screw carried by the ring L to secure the, hub to the ring, upon releasing which the frame may be adjusted to take up 7 wear. 1
N denotes a plurality of rolls mounted on the shafts N in turn keyed or pinned to the annular frame M,-the shafts being free to move along the pins to provide for a slight radial adjustment of the rolls whereby they may be brought into rolling contact with the annular cone. The rolls N are tapered slightly to provide a uniform contacting surface throughout their length with both the inner face of the cone C and the outer face of the cone F, thereby insuring an equal or like speed transmission between the gradually increasing diameter of the cone and the rolls throughout their entire length.
n is a bushing on which the rolls rotate. O is a casting bolted to the cone F and 7 provided with an inclined slotted way 0 through which projects the spring E engaging the movable key E.
Having indicated the several parts by .reference letters, the construction and operation of my device will be readily under stood.
For purposes of description and to more clearly indicate the operation of the device,
7 it is assumed to be employed in connection with a motor boat (not shown), though it is equally well adapted for other installations.
When it is the desire of the operator to the periphery of the cone'shaped portion F of the projecting sleeve F, the fingers h bearing upon the inclined flange of the collar J, thereby securing the sleeve against accidental longitudinal movement with respect to the driving shaft A. The movable key E carried by the cone-shaped ring E is forced outward and into locking relation with the annular cone C through the action 7 of the spring E placed under increasing tension through the rearward (or right hand) movement of the casting O bolted to the cone F whenthe lever G is moved to the position indicated :-it being obvious that the tension of the spring is increased due to its sliding up the inclined way formed in the casting. The cone-shaped ring E when brought into impinging relation with the inner face of the annular cone O upon the lever A being shifted and through the combined action of the coneshaped end F of the sleeve F and the tilting dogs H, carried by the annular shaft D, will rotate the latter, causing the propeller blades to move with the drive shaft or in a forward direction. Should the load, however, be sufficient to cause slipping between the ring E and the inner face of the cone C the movable key E will lock the cone ring E in a positive driving rela-, tion with the annular cone G immediately upon the key E registering with the keyway 6 in the cone,the spring E forcing the key to its seat. 1
It will now be assumed that it is the desire of the operator to throw the device into a neutral position; i. 6., the engine being permitted to run without operating the propeller blades. To accomplish this result, the operating lever G is given a slight movement to the left which serves to unseat the fingers 71, of the dogs H from the depression 7" in the cone-shaped portion F which action permits the spring K to force the sleeve to the right. along the driving shaft A, carrying with it the cone shaped ringE and atthe sametime automatically releasing the movable key E, from engagement with the annular cone C ,it being obvious that the spring E engaging the movable key, being acted upon by the inclined way in the casting 0, will serve to withdraw the movable key from its locking engagement with the annular cone when the sleeve F is forced to the left due' to the-manual operation of the lever G It will now be assumed that it is desired to reverse the direction previously taken by the propeller blades. This result is accornplished by a still further movement of the operating lever G to the left. This action causes the cone F to move to the left sufiiciently to force outward the rolls N into impinging contact with the inner face of the annular cone C The rolls contacting as they do throughout their length with the cone F, are rotated thereby in an opposite direction to that taken by the cone F, and the driving shaft A,at the same time driving the annular cone C by a rolling contact with its inner face-in the same direction as that taken by the rolls and in an opposite direction to that taken by the driving shaft, thus reversing the movement of the propeller shaft C. It will therefore be obvious that while the driving shaft operates in one direction only, the propeller shaft may be actuated in either direction or remain at rest, as governed by the adjustment of the manually operated leverG Attention is directed to the fact that when the lever G3 is again moved to the right,to the position occupied when driving the boat forward,the cone-shaped portion F of the sleeve F will cause the dogs H totilt due to the action of the fingers it bearing thereon while the fingers h, bearing upon the inclined face of the collar J will cause the annular shaft D to move slightly to the left and against the action of the spring K, thereby bringing the cone-shaped ring E,
7 carried by the annular shaft, into impinging relation with the annular V shifting the lever G to the left to either a neutral or reverse position, the spring K will again become active forcing the annular shaft D to the right, thereby assisting in releasing the cone-shaped ring E, from engagement with the annular cone C cone C Upon aving thus described my invention,
what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled therein, a driven shaft, an annular cone carried by the driven shaft having a.
slot adapted to receive a movable key, an annular shaft sleeved on the driving shaft keyed to rotate therewith and free to slide thereon, a cone wheel carried by the annular shaft adapted to engage the annular cone whereby the latter may be rotated in the same direction as the driving shaft, a movable key carried by said cone wheel, and means for forcing said key into the slot formed in the annular cone to secure a looking driving engagement between the cone Wheel and the annular cone;
2. In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled therein, a driven shaft, an annular cone carried by the driven shaft having a slot adapted to receive a movable key, an
nular cone annular shaft sleeved on the driving shaft keyed to rotate therewith and free to slide thereon, means for longitudinally shifting said annular shaft, a cone wheel carried by the annular shaft adapted to engage the annular cone whereby the latter may be rotated in the same direction as the driving shaft, a movable key carried by said cone wheel, a spring for forcing said key into the slot formed in the annular cone to secure a locking driving engagement between the cone wheel and the annular cone, and means for shifting said annular shaft.

In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled therein, a driven shaft, an annular cone carried by the driven shaft having a slot adapted to receive a movable key, an annular shaft sleeved on the driving shaft keyed to rotate therewith and free to slide thereon, means for longitudinally shifting said annular shaft, a cone wheel carried by the annular shaft adapted to engage the annular cone whereby the latter may be rotated in the same direction as the driving shaft, a movable key carried by said cone wheel, a longitudinally slidable element sleeved upon the annular shaft, means for manually actuating the slidable element, and means carried by the slidable element adapted to force the key into the slot in the annular cone and to withdraw it therefrom.

In a device of the character described, a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled therein, a driven shaft, an annular cone carried by the driven shaft having a slot adapted to receive a movable key, an annular shaft sleeved on the driving shaft keyed to rotate therewith and free to slide thereon, means for longitudinally shifting said annular shaft, a cone wheel carried by the annular shaft adapted to engage the anwhereby the latter may be rotated in the same direction as the driving shaft, a movable key carried by said cone wheel, a longitudinally slidable element sleeved upon the annular shaft, means for manually actuating the slidable element, an
