CONTROLLING DEVICE FOR WINDING-MACHINES' Application filed June 29, 1912.
. --trolling winding machines, whereby uniform lengths of thread may be wound upon holders, such as spools or tubes. In my Patent No. 1,030,147 dated June 18, 1912, I have shown a device of this character" in which the winding operation is stopped by a mechanically controlled mechanism.
One feature of the present invention contemplates the provision of electro-responsive means for controlling the winding operation when a predetermined weight of thread has been wound upon the holder.
A further feature contemplates the provision of means for automatically severing the thread when the predetermined amount of thread is wound upon the holder. The winding operation may be stopped without severing the thread, or the thread may be severed without stopping the machine when a full length has been wound, or the device may be arranged to sever the thread and stop the machine simultaneously.
The invention will be clearly understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in whichvFigure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation showing one embodlment of the invention applied to a so-called Universal winding machine, Fig. 2 is a sideelevatlon of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the contaotarm and knife, Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly diagrammatic, of a-modified form of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation showing a thread guide.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown applied to the well known Universal winding machine, which is illustrated and described in the patent granted to S. W. Wardwell, No. 801,941 dated October 17 1905, but it should be understood that the invention is readily applicable to other styles of winding machines.
As illustratedin Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the winding machine comprises a frame 10, having a winding spindle 12, driven by a pulley 14, the latter being shown in Fig. 4 only. A thread holder 16, whlch may be a Specification of Letters Patent.

tube or a spool, is held on the winding spindle by a nut 17 and upon this holder the mass of thread 18 is wound from the supply. The supply of thread may be supported in various ways, for example, in this form of the device it is intended to be supported in the manner shown in my said patent. The thread passes from the supply to a tension device 20, thence under a finger 22 on a wire lever 24, the latter being fulcrumed at 25 on a sector 26 of a stop-motion device carried by a swinging traverse frame 28. The sector is fulcrumed at 27 on the main frame 10. The lever 24 is formed with a leg 30 composed of wire, the innerend of which hangs adjacent to the corrugated rim of a wheel or disk 32 carried by a cam shaft 34 and rotating in the direction of the arrow. From the finger 22 the thread passes to a reciprocating guide 23. Whenever the thread breaks, the finger 22 is unsupported and the lever tilts so that the loop or leg 30 engages the rim of the wheel 32, whereupon the stop-motion is actuated as explained in the patent to Wardwell above mentioned;
My device is adapted to be applied bodily to the above described winding machine without changing any of its instrumentalities above set forth. In order to accurately control the stopping of the winding operation when a predetermined amount of thread is wound on the holder, I provide means for holding a supply of thread which is arranged to be balanced. The balancing device may be such as is shown in my said patent, in which'a plurality of like, net thread weights and adjustable weights are arranged to balance the supply. A rod 40, similar to the rod 48 of my said patent, is adapted to support the thread from which a holder is filled. This rod depends from the balancing device, as shown in my said patent, and is provided with an arm 42 insulated therefrom by a bushing 48, and having a contact 44 at its" free end. A conductor 46 connects the contact 44 with one pole of a battery 47, and the other pole of the battery is connected by a conductor 48 to one terminal of an electromagnet 50. The other terminal of the electromagnet is connected by a conductor 52 to a stationary contact 53, mounted on, but insulated from, the
cuit through the electromagnet 50- is thus closed and the latter is thereby energized;
The electromagnet attracts its armature'54 and thus swings the sector 26 about its'fulcrum 27 to actuate the stop-motion,-whereupon the winding operation is stopped;
. In some instances it may be desirable to automatically severthe thread whe'n the pre-: 7 determined amount has been wound upon the holder. To accomplish this a bar 56'is affixed to the rod 40 in proximity to' the finger 22 and provided with a dovetail'slot' 57 having its inclined edges 58 sharpened to form knives. During the winding operation the thread passes from the tension device in proximity to the upper edge of the bar 56, then under the finger 22, and through the reciprocatory guide23. When the balance is restored, by having the desired length of thread wound upon the holder 16,
knives 58 and severed, thus preventing the thread from being wound upon the holder.

The operation of this form of the device is obvious from the explanation given above.

' In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of thread guiding means adapted for use when the balancing device is mounted upon the top of the winding machine. It comprises a rod 80 aitlxed to a scale pan 81 and bent at right angles to form a horizontal arm 82,

In combination with thread winding means, a stop motion device, electricallyoperated devices for actuating said stop motion device to stop said winding means, electrical contact devices relatively movable to control said electrically-operated devices, a thread-cutting device, movable to cut the thread as it leads to said winding means, and a device controlled by thread-weight and movable to operate said contact devices and said thread cutting device when a predetermined weight of thread has been wound on said winding means, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a Winding machine having means for winding thread upon a holder, of a stop-motion device for stopping the machine, a balancing device provided with a support for a supply of thread, a normally open electric circuit including an electromagnet, and means operated by said balancing device adapted to close said circuit when a predetermined weight of thread has been wound upon the holder, said electromagnet being arranged to actuate said stop motion device when said circuit is closed.
8. The combination with a winding machine having means for winding thread upon a holder, of a stop-motion device for stopping the winding operation, saiddevice having a pivotally mounted member, an electro-responsive device adapted to swing said member to actuate said stop-motion device, and a device governed by threadweight and arranged to control said electroresponsive device when a predetermined weight of thread has been wound upon the holder.
9. In combination with thread winding means, a stop motion device, electrically operated devices for actuating said stop motion device to stop said winding means, electrical contact devices relatively movable to control said electrically operated devices, a thread cutting device, movable to cut the thread as it leads to said winding means, and a device controlled by thread-weight and vertically movable to operate said contact devices and said thread-cutting device when a predetermined weight of thread has been wound on said winding means, substantially as described.
10. The combination with thread winding means, an actuating thread-weight governed device to move from an initial position when a predetermined weight of thread has been wound on said winding means, a stop motion device, electrically operated devices for actuating said stop motion devices to stop said winding means, controlling means for said electrically operated devices, comprising a pair of contact devices, one disposed to be moved by said actuating device on movement thereof from its initial position, to cause operation of said stop motion device, and a thread cutting device, movable by said actuating device, during its movement from initial position, to cut the thread leading to said winding means, substantially as described.
