Letters raam No. 114,273, dated May' 2'; 1811.
IMPRVEMEN'' IN PRINTERS' CASES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it'knowu that I, ALEXANDER T. DE PUY, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain Improvements in the construction of Type-Cases; and that the followingis a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of -this specification and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 isa-view of a type-case made in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a view of a second form of case made in the same manner.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the lling oi' my improved case.
Figures 4 and 5 are views of the filling of a typecase as at present made.
In the drawing like parts of the invention are designated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention consists in certain improvements in the construction of type-cases as more fully hereinafter set forth, the object of the invention being the production of a typecase far more durable and reliable than those at present in use at a slightly-increased cost to the consumer.
As at present constructed the strips forming the filling of the case are fitted together by sawing away aportion of the vertical and cross-strips about onehalf their thickness, so that the unsawed portions of the strips shall be received within the sawed portions of' the strips respectively.
The strips thus yfitted together are more orless` weak, apt to be easily broken, and the case soon needs repairing or an entire new filling.
'lo overcome this defect in the manufacture of typecascs is the object of the present invention.
B is the illing inserted in the same, composed of .a series ot' vertical and cross-'strips united as just'de scribed, and dividing the case into a series of boxes to receive the type placed in the same. i
G shows a series ot' clamps, formed of copper, tin, brass, or any suitable metal, and made cruciform, which clamps may be struck up, punched, or made in any convenient manuel', and, after the filling B has been placed in the case A, are laced` at the points where the vertical and cross-strips intersect each other, are swaged down so as to fill the angles formed by the vertical and cross-strips, and have passed through them brads, which pass entirelythrough the strips andare clinched upon the under side of the case.
When the type-case is-inadel as shown in iig. 2 of the drawing'the metal is turned down uponone side of the vertical strip, as shown, withthe same result.
rlhe diieulties heretofore described'as attending the use of a type-case constructed in the usual manner are entirely overcome by the present improve- -men t, which can be readily applied to-any of the typecases now in use.
Having thus set forth my improvement,
That I claim as new-is- The combination, with the filling of a type-case, of any number oi' met-al clmnps, when` constructed and pperating substantially as and for the purposes set orth.
Witnesses: ALEXANDERT. DE PUY.
