STENCILING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELLMUTH LEI-IM- KUHL, a subject of Germany, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stenciling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a stenciling apparatus, which is adapted for the ready selection of a stencil of required size and adjustment of material to be printed upon, so that letters or figures may be easily, quickly and accurately inscribed upon said material.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section of a detail and Fig. 3 is a plan of a detail.
In the drawing, A indicates a stencil in which the letters are formed in transverse lines adjacent its transverse edges, which lie parallel to the lines of a letter. This stencil is provided with the reinforcing rib 2, which forms a convenient handle by which the stencil can be moved about. 'The transverse edge lying adjacent to each row of letters is marked with indications 3 lying vertically above the. center of each letter for the purposes to be hereinafter described. For convenience in using this stencil a frame B is provided having a flat surface C formed by a top plate 4 and near the top end of said surface the head frame D is provided which is hinged at 5 to a head board 6, which is secured to the frame, so that the head frame may be swung back or lifted upon the hinges. The head frame is formed by two end pieces 7 and S, to which are secured a top plate 9 and a front strip 10, which are spaced apart to form a long transverse opening 11. The front strip 10 acts as a straight edge standing vertically above the top surface C and against which the top edge of the stencil is adapted to be adjusted and moved laterally across the surface into suitable position for stenciling purposes. The surface of the front piece 10 is marked with a suitable scale 13 and the lower edge of the surface C is marked with a corresponding scale 14, so that the material to be printed upon such as a sheet of paper may be placed below the straight edge formed by the front piece 10 by lifting the head frame D and the material adjusted into vertical position below the straight edge upon the flat surface C.
Placed in the head frame D is a roller 15, which is journaled in the end pieces 7 and 8 by trunnions 17, one of which is provided with a knob 18 situated outside of the head frame by which the roller can be turned. A guide 19 in the form of a fiat bar secured to the ends 7 and 8 with a flat surface placed uppermost is positioned within the frame close to the opening 11 and a band 20 passing around said roller and the guide 19 is adapted to be moved to disclose scales such as 21 inscribed on its surface through the opening 11. The scales 21 indicate distances transversely through the opening 11 above the surface C. Each scale as illustrated be ing marked with a zeroindication substantially midway between the side edges of the surface 0 and the indications being numbered consecutively outwardly away from the zero mark. Each of these scales is adapted to indicate a certain width of letter that can be used on a sheet of material to be printed upon by the stencil, for instance if it is desired to print a word having eight letters upon a sheet of material of a certain width, the band 20 is moved until a scale appears through the opening 11, the indications of which number outwardly from the zero mark four digits on each side of the Zero, it being assumed that the sheet of material has been located centrally on either side of the middle of the surface 0. As many scales 21 on the band 20 are employed as there are different widths of letters on the stencils, it being obvious that each stencil has a set of letters of each width. When the scale has been turned to indicate the number of letters which can be printed upon the sheet of material, the number of the stencil containing the letters of desired width is indicated by a key marked 22, which is inscribed at the end of the scale and appears through the opening 11, the templet being marked with a corresponding key 22. The height of the letters which are to be inscribed by the templet can be determined by vertical scales such as 23, which are marked on each side portion of the surface 0, there being provided a set of templets having a key 22 containing letters of the heights indicated by the vertical scales.

It will be noted that some letters such as M W occupy a greater lateral space than others and forthatpurpose the lateral scales 11 on the band- 20 are apportioned with suitable spaces for letters requiring one-half spaces such as I, letters requiring one and one-half spaces such as M and W and the remaining letters containing whole spaces, and in computing the lateral spaces required fora given word or numbers or both, suit able spaces should be accorded to the letters and numbers to be inscribed upon the material; -The'device aids in the more rapid and accurate inscribing of letters and figures on material and places before a person having little or no experience in such work an appliance which enables the rapid use of stencils.
accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative,- and that, the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a stenciling apparatus, the combination with a base, of a head frame carried by said base, said frame having a sight opening, spaced members supported within said frame, an endless band having scales printed thereon and passing about said spaced members to register with said opening, means for moving said band, and stencil plates each having openings corresponding to a scale on said band.
2. In a stenciling apparatus, the combination with a base, of a head frame carried by said base, said frame having a sight opening, a rotary drum journaled in said frame, a guide member secured in said frame, an endless band having a series of scales printed thereon and passing about said drum and said guide member to register with said opening, means for rotating said drum, and stencil plates each having openings corresponding to a scale on said band.
3. In a stenciling apparatus, the combination with a base, of a head frame hingedly connected to said base andhaving an angu- Iarly disposed edge adapted to engage and hold material to be stenciled, said frame having a sight opening, spaced members supported within said frame, an endless band having scales printed thereon and passing about said spaced members to register with said opening, means for moving said band, and stencil plates each having openings corresponding to a scale on said band.
4. In a stenciling apparatus, the combination with a base having a graduated scale, of a head frame carried by said base, said frame having a sight opening, a graduated scale on said frame in proximity to said sight opening and cooperating with the scale on said base, spaced members supported within said frame, an endless band having scales printed thereon and passing about said spaced members to register with said opening, means for moving said band, and stencil plates each having openings corresponding to a scale on said band.
