WILLIAM A. COBBAN, OIE' CULBERTSON, MONTANA.
CALF-WEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 17, 1914. Serial No. 851,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. CoBBAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Culbertson, in the county of Sheridan and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf-Weaners; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of themvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a calf weaner; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, Figure l is a perspective View of the improved weaner, applied in operative position to the nasal septum of a calf; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved weaner, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the same; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, corresponding to Fig. 2, but showing the lock pin in an inoperative position.
The numeral 1 indicates a guard plate, having in one of its longitudinal edges a notch 2, adapted to embrace the nasal septum of a calf Z. The notched longitudinal edge of the guard plate 1 is rolled to aiford a pair of axially alined seats 8, on opposite sides of the notch 2.
A lock pin 4, for securing the guard plate to the nasal septum oi? the calf, is slidably mounted for endwise movement in the seats 3. This lock pin 4, when moved into both of the seats 3, extends across the notch 2 and its outer end is bent laterally at 5 and terminates in a hook 6. Formed in the guard plate 1 is a perforation 7, into which the hook 6 is adapted to be inserted, under a slight springing action of the laterally bent end 5 of the lock pin, for holding the lock pin in an operative position. The guard plate 1 is preferably formed of sheet metal, and the lock pin 4 formed from a steel wire having a slight spring therein.
To apply the improved weaner in an operative position, the lock pin 4: is moved into a position as shown in Fig. 4:. The guard plate 1 is then applied to the nasal septum of the calf so that said nasal septum extends into the notch 2. The lock pin 4 is now moved into a position as shown in Fig. 2, which movement punctures the nasal septum and thereby securely locks the device to the calf. Obviously, the device may be readily applied to or removed from the calf, at will.
What I claim is:
A calf weaner, comprising a guard plate having a notch in one edge adapted to embrace the nasal septum, the notched edge of said guard plate being rolled to afi'ord a pair of alined seats on opposite sides of said notch, and a lock pin, slidably mounted in said seats for movement through said notchand through the nasal septum, one end of said lock pin being laterally bent and terminating in a hook adapted to enter a perforation in the body of said guard plate, under a spring action, for holding said pin in an operative position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. COBBAN.
Witnesses J. E. PETERSON, K. O. SLETTE.
