To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD HALDEN- WANG, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hand fans and particularly to that class adapted to be folded into small compass.

The objects of the invention are, first, to provide a fan which may be folded, one part past another, for convenience in carrying.

11 second object is to provide means whereby the fan is automatically held in either a folded position or extended for use.

Third, to combine with the fan a carrying means for toilet accessories and the like, and, finally, to provide a fan which can be used as a sun or wind shield, and particularly as an advertising medium.

These and other objects, which will become manifest, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side view of the fan folded into its least compass. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, as extended for use. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the handle, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view showing a modified. form of construction in a folded position. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same extended. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1 Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing in detail the automatic catch used in holding the fan extended. Fig. 8 is a similar view of the combined stop and guard for holding the blade members when folded. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective view showing in detail a modified form of construction from that indicated in Fig. 6, and, Fig. 10 is a view of the constraining band.

In the simplest form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the entire structure consists of two main elements each comprising a blade section 15 and handle 16, both being formed identically alike from any suitable material, as'heavy card board, and joined together in pairs, side by side, arranged so that the edge of the right hand element faces the corresponding edge of the left hand element, by

means of a tubular rivet 18, the flanged ends of which hold the elements in close relation but allow them to pivot on the tubular portion of the rivet. The handle sections are formed with semicircular ends 19, from which extend an outwardly curved profile 20 suited to the hand. On the extreme of the handles is applied a reinforcing element 21, the same being held in position by the tubular rivets and having an extension reaching toward the angular corner of the fan, it being caused to adhere to the fan material by any approved method. A. tape, ribbon or cord 22 may be passed through the rivet and used as a carrying means as usual. On'the opposite edge of the handle, the material is,

formed substantially parallel as at 23, to the concave portion 24, from whence it is curved outwardly as at 25, the extreme point 26 being symmetricalwith the point 27 on the opposite side. Immediately above these points are indentations or recesses 28 and 29 adapted to receive a spring constraining element 30, which may preferably be a rubber band, although obviously any elastic means may be used with like eflect.

From the recess 28 the material is beveled outwardly, forming an edge 31, terminating at the corner 32, the upper edge 33 being curved to a radius of which the rivet 18 is approximately the center. The opposite corner is bounded by a curve from whence extends the outer edge 34. terminating at the recess 29. Thus it will be seen that when folded, one element is superimposed upon the other and is held in such position by means of the elastic band 30; when the two handle portions are grasped the band is caused to stretch allowing the blade elements to separate, assuming the shape indicated in Fig. 2, forming the conventional shape of a common hand fan. The function of the band is to cause the blade members to assume a folded position as soon as the hand grasp is relaxed and also to hold the members in intimate side contact at all times.

Thus it is possible to utilize either or both of the adjacent blade surface as a sustaining and transporting means for thin flat articles such as are in frequentdemand, for instance, a mirror, comb and face powder receptacle.

This clip makes contact with the rounded corner of the other fan blade when they'are folded, substantially opposite the clip 40, but upon exerting pressure to open the fan, the clip is caused to rise as the fan blade elements move in separating until it enters the recess 47, preventingthe blades fromclosing, until it has been withdrawn by releasing the spring 48, the center of which is coiled around the body of the'rivet 4:1 and is probacking 45.

The fan blades arearranged with transparent inserts 52, as colored or clear celluloid, either in one or both members, the same being held in place by the fan material 15 asindicated in Fig. 6, or the entire blade may be made of transparent material engaged within a border as shown in Fig. 9.

Thus there is provided an eflicient means for protecting the eyes against the glare of the sun, or wind driven'particles, with equal facility and without interfering with theuse of the device as a fan.

Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I

1. A fan comprised of two like side elements forming integral blade and handle portions, one of said elements being reversed and superimposed upon the other, and a uniting means connecting the handle portions in such manner that they may freely pivot thereon. A. fan comprised of two similar side members, each constituting a full handle and a partial blade element, one being superimposed on the other, a pivotal connection therebetween, a reinforcement on theexterior of each of said handles, a border formed With said reinforcement extending along the side and upper edges of the blade portion, a constraining means embracingly engaging said blade portions, a limiting clip attached to one of said blades adapted to engage with the other when the device is in a closed position, a spring clip also engageable therewith, said spring clip being secured to the said blade as the fixed clip, and means combined with said spring clip whereby said device may be retained in an open position.

9. A fan comprised of two side members of uniform contour, one overlying the other and forming respectively blade and handle elements, a transparent insert in one or both blades, a tubular rivet pivotally engaging the handle portions and a constraining means adapted to maintain the member in a normally closed position.

10. A fan comprised of two side members of uniform contour, one overlying the other and forming respectively blade and handle elements, a tubular rivet pivotally engaging the handle portions, a constraining means adapted to maintain the member in a normally closed position, and a colored translucent panel secured in one or both blade members.
