To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUeUsT DWORAK, a subject of the King of Wurttemberg, residing at 3 Pfitzerstrasse, Stuttgart, VVurttemberg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pamphlet-Covering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a machine for covering pamphlets, loose sheets or signatures of paper.
The main object of the invention is to provide a machine which will turn out covered pamphlets and the like which are durable and of good appearance.
The improvements relate mainly to the mechanism for applying the adhesive and to the mechanism for applying the cover around the block of sheets and pressing it thereon. In this machine the covers are conducted singly by an automatic device or by hand to a creasing device in which channels are formed in the cover so that when the latter is subsequently applied to the block of sheets there are sharp edges between the back and the sides; thence the covers pass to a gluing device Where an adhesive substance is applied to their back portions. From the gluing device they pass to the covering mechanism. This consists of a revolving member rotatable about a vertical pivot and provided with clamping means in which the loose blocks of sheets are placed and by which they are carried, in a half-revolution, over the glued cover. During the half-revolution of the revolving member the block of loose sheets is carried over a gluing device and coated with glue on the back. WVhen a block of sheets clamped in the clamping device of the revolving member is located above the cover, the latter is raised by a vertically reciproeating clampingdevice and firmly applied to the block of sheets. The clamping device of the revolving member then releases the block of sheets and the finished pamphlet remains clamped in the reciprocating clamping device. By vice it is carried to a collecting ordepositing box in which the finished pamphlets are collected and pressed together for a certain time.

tion, partly in section, on the line AA of Fig. 1, seen in the direction of the arrows, and showing the general arrangement of the revolving member feeding the blocks of sheets to the covers, and of the vertically reciprocating mechanism for applying the covers to the blocks of sheets and for depositing the covered pamphlets in the collecting box. The covers are placed in a pile upon the table 1 so that their inner side lies upward. From this pile they are brought separately either by hand or by any suitable mechanism, between feed rollers 2 and 3 with their inside face upward with one top edge leading. The lower roller 2 is continuously driven so that it runsnninterruptedly in one and the same direction, while the upper roller 3, which is not positively driven, can be raised and lowered, this being effected by 7 means of a rod 4 by which it is supported and a cam 5 which acts on one end of an intermediate lever 6. After the passage of each cover the roller 3 is raised and only lowered again by springs '7 after the intro duction of the next cover between the two A rollers. By means of the feed rollers the covers are carried at uniform intervals of time to andbetween the continuously rotating channeling or creasing rollers 8 and 9. by means of which two creases or grooves are impressed in the cover. These creases serve thepurpose, when the covers are being applied around the pamphlet to produce a sharp and clear bend between the back portion and the sides, thereby imparting a good appearance to the pamphlet.
The gluing roller 10 (Figs. 4 and 5) is arranged behind the creasing rollers and applies the glue or adhesive to the back portion ofthe cover. The gluing roller 10 is also driven continuously. From the glue tank 11 the gluing roller 10 is provided with glue by the intermediary of the roller 12 mounted in the tank 11 and also continuously driven. The glue tank is fixed to the rod 4 and is therefore raised and lowered simultaneously with the upper feed roller 3, the positions of the rollers 10 and 12 being such that it is only when the glue tank is raised to its highest position that the'roller 12 contacts with the gluing roller 10, while at other times there is a clear space between them so that the covers, which, in consequence of the periodical action of the feed rollers 2 and 3, can only be carried beneath the gluing roller 10 when the glue tank 11 is lowered are not'coated with glue upon their outside. Beneath the gluing roller 10 and on both sides thereof springs 13 are arranged. By means of these springs when the covers pass, beneath the gluing roller 10 they are pressed against it so that the glue is deposited uniformly upon the 'covers from the roller. The advantage of this gluing device is that the periphery of the gluing rollerineed not correspond with the length of the cover, so that one gluing roller can be used for covers of different lengths, while soiling of the outside of the cover with glueis completely prevented. The glued covers then pass from beneath the roller 10 to the conyeyer bands 14'. On the one hand these bands run over a roller 15 behind the roller 10 and on the other hand over rollers 16 at the end of the machine and then around rollers 16 (Fig. 2) and are kept perma-. nently taut by means of weights 17 hung on the spindle of these rollers. The roller 15 is driven so that it always runs in one direction.. The drive of the lower feed roller 2 the channeling rollers, the gluing roller and the. rollers 12 and leis effected from the driving shaft 18, through a chain 19 driving a wheel 20, from which the said elements are driven by means of gear wheels vertical shaft 22 and diametrically opposite each other. The outer clamping jaws 23 are carried by arms 25 upon which they are adjustable by means of set screws 30, in order to modify the distance between the outer and inner jaws to correspond with the thickness ofthe pamphlets to be dealt with. The inner jaws 2 1- are fixed to pivots 26 (Fig. 6) displaceable radially to the shaft 22 in the hollow sleeves 27. Springs 28 tend to. press the pivots 26 and jaws 24 outward 1 so that the block of sheets is clamped between the jaws 23 and '24. Rollers 29 are secured to the pivots 26 and serve to draw back the inner jaws .24- for the purpose of inserting the block of sheets and releasing it again after the cover has been folded over the sheets. A. pair of clamping jaws 45 (Figs. 7 to 13) serve to apply the cover to and press it against the block of sheets to be covered. The clamping jaws 45 are arranged upon a cross-member 46 guided by-the rods 47 and displaceable vertically. This vertical reciprocation causes the lower jaws 45 to come alternately directly beneath the jaws 23, 24 of the, revolving member in order to provide with its cover the block of sheets carried past by the revolving member, to seize it and deliver the finished pamphlets opposite the collecting box. The upward and downward movement of the cross member 46 is produced by a cam plate 48,-movement being transmitted therefrom by a rocking lever 49 with a sector 50 engaging toothed wheels 51' and 52 which mesh with a rack rod 53 rigidly connected with the cross member 46. The clamping jaws 45 are rotatably mounted upon the cross member 46 by means of the parallel shafts or hinges 54. Levers 56 are secured to the outer ends of each shaft 54. These levers are rigidly connected with the jaws 45 by means of screws 58 (Fig. 10). Between the two levers on each side a spring 57 is extended and tends to draw together the two levers and with them the two j aws 45. so that a pamphlet clamped between the jaws is held by a spring power until this is overcome by some other force. This renders it possible to maintain the finished pamphlet between the jaws until they have conveyed it to the collecting box. On their upper edges the jaws 45 are provided with serrations 62 which are so arranged that they engage be tween the notches 42- and 44 on the upper jaws 23 and 24 when the lower jaws cooperate with the upper. Between the two jaws 45-is a plate 59 carried by pins 60 vertically displaceable in the cross member 46. Springs 61 press the pins 60 and the plate 59 upward. The plate 59 serves to press the cover against the back of the block of sheets so that the latter will adhere to the cover throughout its length. Accord ingly when a pamphlet is clamped in the jaws45 the springs 61'1nust first of all be compressed by pressure exerted by the back of the pamphlet upon the plate 59. In order that the springs 61 may not prematurely force the pamphlet out of the jaws 45, a locking device (Fig. 11) is provided. This consists of a plate 63 displaceably arranged on the under side of the cross meniebr 46. Screws 64 passing through. slots 65 hold this plate in position and bolts 66 arranged upon it engage heads 67 upon the ends of the pins 60 which protrude below from the cross member 46. By this means the pins 60 and the springs 61 are prevented from being pressed upward higher than is necessary for the heads 67 to encounter the bolts 66 whereby the travel of the plate 59 between the clamping jaws 45. in the upward direction is limited. Springs 68 engage the plate at one end their other ends being fixed to the cross member 46 thereby tending to press the plate laterally to such an extent that the bolts 66 engage the heads 67. A nose 69 is also providedon the under side of the plate 63; When the cross memebr 46 with the jaws 45 assumes the lowest position, the nose 69 encounters apin 70 fixed to the frame of the machine. By this means the plate is displaced laterally in opposition to the tractional effort of the springs 68 and the bolts 66 are pressed behind the heads 67, so that the springs 61 are able to press upward between the jaws 45 the pins 60 with the plate 59 fixed thereon.
- Devices are arranged upon the machine frame for opening the jaws 45 in their highest and lowest positions; these devices penetrate between the levers 56 connected with the jaws 45 and thereby prize apart the said jaws. Beneath the revolving member a glumg device is provided (Figs. 1 and 2) by means of which the block of sheets clamped in the jaws of the revolving member are coated with glue on the back portion. This gluing device consists of a glue tank 78 in which a roller continuously driven by a cord and pulley device 79 is mounted. Above the roller 80 is a second roller 81, which contacts with the roller 80, by which it is consequently driven and also supplied with glue. The back of the block of sheets clamped in the jaws 23, 2 1 slides over this roller 81 when owing to the rotation of the revolving member it is carried from the supply table 4-1 toward the interior of the machine. p
The ejecting device consists of a plate 82 fixed to'one end or" a rod 84 displaceably .mounted in a sleeve bearing 83. A bell crank lever 85 engages the other end of the rod 8%, and is operated from a cam plate 86, whereby thereciprocation of the rod 84 is effected. As soon as the jaws 15 with, a finished pamphlet have reached their lowest position and the jaws 45 have been opened by the pin 76, the plate 82 presses the pamphlet into the collecting boX 87. In order to prevent the pamphlets from falling out laterally, flaps 88 are arranged rotatably on pins 89 on each "side of the ejecting device. V When the jaws 15 move downward,
theroller 90 encounters a stop 91 on the cross member 46 and by this means the flaps 88', which are normally turned back, are raised and come upon both sides of the pamphlet, so that it is unable to escape laterally during its ejection.

The sheet clamped in the jaws 23, 24 is therefore exposed upon its inner side, so that it can be coated with glue while it is clamped. The apparatus for applying the 'lue consists of a gluing Wheel 97 rotatable abouta vertical shaft. When the revolving member rotates, this gluing wheel travels laterally upon the clamped sheet which is prevented from escaping by the serrations 42 of the outer clamping jaw 23. As the sheet occupies difierent distances from the axis of rotation-of the revolver, in order that the gluing wheel may contact with it throughout its entire length, this wheel must be displaceable radially to the axis of rotation of the revolving member. WVith this object it is mounted upon a carriage 98 running on rails 100 by means of rollers 99. By means of a weight upon the cable 101 the gluing wheel is kept in contact with the sheet to be. glued. The wheel 97 is driven by cord transmission acting on the roller 102. This roller is fixed to a shaft 103 which also carries a gear wheel 104. The latter meshes with, a long or thick wheel 105 mounted on the carriage and which is displacedupon the wheel 104 when the carriage is reciprocated. A shaft 106 to which the wheel 105 is keyed drives the shaft 108 of the wheel 97 by bevel gearing 107. The glue is applied to the wheel 97 from the glue tank 111 by a roller 109.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is V 1. A machine of the class described comprising in combination feeding rollers for the covers, means for applying glue to the inside of said covers, rollers for grooving said'covers, a rotating member for delivering blocks of sheets to the covers having movable serrated clamping jaws, means for applying the cover to' the block of sheets, movable jaws carried by said means and serrated along their edges, said serrations engaging between the serrations on the jaws of the rotating member, substantially asdescribed. 7
2 A machine of the class described comprising in combination feeding rollers for the covers, a gluing device for applying glue to the inside of said covers, rollers for grooving said covers, a rotating member having movable jaws of which one is serrated along its lower edge and the other is provided with a plate hinged thereto and serrated along its lower edge, a device for applying the cover to the block of sheets, movable jaws carried by said device and serrated along their edges, said serrations engaging between the serrations on the jaws of the rotating member substantially as set forth.
3. A machine of the class described comprising in combination feeding rollers for the covers, a gluing device for applying glue,
to the inside of said covers, grooving rollers for said covers, a rotating member having movable jaws of which one is serrated along its lower edge and the other is provided with a plate hinged thereto and serrated along its lower edge, a vertically reciprocated device for applying the cover to the block of sheets, movable jaws carried by said device and serrated along their edges, said serrations engaging between the serrations on the jaws of the rotating member, and stops for prizing apart the said movable jaws of the vertically reciprocated device shortly before they reach their highest position and as they reach their lowest position, substantially as set forth.

A machine of the class described comprising in combination feeding rollers for the covers, a gluing device for applying glue to the inside of said covers, rollers for grooving said covers, a rotating member having movable jaws of which one is serrated along its lower edge and the other is provided with a plate hinged thereto and serrated along its lower edge, a vertically IGCIPIOCEttQCl device for applying the cover to the block of sheets, movablejaws carried by said device and serrated along their edges, said serrations engaging between the serrations on the jaws of the rotating member, a stop for prizing the movable jaws of the vertically reciprocated device apart shortly before they reach their highest position, consisting of a lever mounted in the path of travel'of said jaws and so as to be incapable of motion in an upward direction but capable of movement in a downward direction, whereby the movable jaws are prized apart as they move up, snap together over said stop, and move downwardly in closed position, and a stop for prizing said jaws apart as they reach their lowest position consisting of a wedge-shaped projection. substantially as described.
5. A machine of the class described comprising in combination feeding rollers for the covers, a gluing device for applying glue to the inside of said covers, rollers for grooving said covers, a rotating member having movablejaws of which one is serrated along its lower edge and the other 7 is provided with a plate hinged thereto and serrated along its loweredge, a vertically reciprocated device for applying the cover to the block of sheets, movable jaws carried by said device and serrated along their edges, said serrations engaging between the serrations on the jaws of the rotating member, stops for prizing the said movable jaws of the vertically reciprocated device apart shortly before they reach their highest position and as they reach their lowest position, a movable plate mounted between the jaws of said device, means for controlling the movement of saidvplate consisting of a movable plate mounted on said reciprocating member, bolts mounted on said plate, pins actuating said plate, said bolts engaging the head of said pins, anda projection on said plate and a stop engaged by said projection as the reciprocating member reaches its lowest position whereby said plate is moved so as to release the heads of the said pins, substantially as set forth.

A machine of the class described comprising in combination feeding rollers for the covers, a gluing device for applying glue to the inside of said covers, rollers for grooving said covers, a rotating member having movable jaws of which one is serrated along its lower edge and the other is provided with a plate hinged thereto and serrated along its lower edge, a vertically reciprocated device for applying the cover to the block' of sheets, movable jaws carried by said device and serrated along their edges, said serrations engaging between the serrations on the jaws of the rotating member,stops for prizing the said movable aws of the vertically reciprocated device apart shortly before they reach their highest position and as they reach their lowest position, and guideflaps carried by said vertically reciprocated device, consisting of flaps carried by levers pivoted on said device, and a roller mounted on said lever, a stop, said Gbpies of this patent may be obtained for roller engaging said stop as the device reaches its lowest position thereby'bringing the'fiaps into operative position.
