Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, ABLON D. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at W inchendon, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Catch-Basins, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same.
My present invention relates to that class of catch-basins which are employed for receiving the surface water from the gutters of streets, and it has for its objects to provide a metallic basin capable of being sunk in the earth by the removal of earth from the inside of the basin; to provide means for facilitating the cleaning of the basin and to provide means for detachably locking the cover or grating in position. These objects, among others, I accomplish by means of the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the annexed claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved catchbasin. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view. Fig. 3 1s a plan view, detached view of the cover.

My improved catchbasin comprises three sections, a lower cylindrical section 1 open and Fig. 4 is a at both ends and provided at its upper end with an exterior flange 2 forming a shoulder 3 upon which is seated an intermediate section 4, also cylindrical and provided upon one side with an integral outlet 5. The upper end of the section 4: is provided with an exterior flange 6 forming a shoulder 7 upon which is seated an upper section 8, which is preferably dome shaped and is provided with a concentric restricted opening 9 inclosed by a vertical flange 10 and having an interior shoulder 11 upon which rests a cover 12. The cover 12 comprises a ring 13 upon which is mounted a grating 14: with side openings 15.
Projecting inwardly from the flange 10 and on diametrically opposite sides are lugs 16, 16 adapted to enter openings 17 in the lower edge of the ring 13 and be moved into side slots 18 by the rotation of the cover.
The upper wall of the slot 18 is provided with a shoulder 19 arranged to contact with the edge of the lug 16 to prevent the reverse rotative movement of the cover. In order to remove the cover it is slightly lifted in order to bring the shoulder 19 above the upper surface of the lug 16, thereby enabling the cover to be turned until the lug 16 is brought into alinement with the opening 17 in the edge of the ring 13, when the cover may be lifted from the basin.
In the construction of my improved catchbasin, I preferably make the lower section 1 about two-thirds the desired depth of the basin and with straight cylindrical walls, enabling the lower section 1 to be sunk in the earth by the removal of material from the inner side of the basin, thereby utilizing the wall of the section 1 as a retaining wall and enabling the basin to be sunk in quicksand. The intermediate section 4 is provided with the integral overflow opening 5, enabling the intermediate section to be exchanged for other sections having overflow openings of different sizes when desired. The upper or dome shaped section 8 is preferably reinforced by a series of interior ribs 20. The removal of the upper section 8 forms an opening of the entire diameter of the basin, thereby facilitating the cleaning of the basin by the removal of sediment.
I claim,
A catch basin comprising a lower section of uniform cross section, adapted for disposition below the level of the soil, and open at both ends, whereby the same may be sunk into position by removal of soil from the interior thereof, an upper section providing a removable perforated cover plate disposed substantially at the level of the soil, and an intermediate section providing an inner wall continuous with the inner walls of said upper and lower sections, whereby the cleaning of the basin is unobstructed, said intermediate section having an outlet passage leading therefrom.
