which is pivotally mounted at g upon the VALVE-GEAR 1 ,141,411h 'Specification of Letters Ptut.
` Application filed August 7, 1918. Serial N o. 788,518.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, GEORGE F. RICHART,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and Statu of-Colorado, have '1nvented certain new and useful Im rove- Iments in Valve-Gears, of which the ollow- 4 ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. h
This invention relates to improvements in valve-gears; and an o bject of this invention is to simplify the construction of valvegears by doing away with many of the parts ofvalve-gears now in use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a valve-gear in which all the parts shall be visible and so positioned as to be easily oiled and accessible for the making of repairs or the replacing of parts.
A third object of this invention is to provide. a valve-gear in which the-lead will be increased as the reverse-lever is moved to- Ward the center of its quadrant.
11. fourth object of -this invention is to provide a valve-gear in which the setting of the valve shall be extremely simple.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of an engine structure equipped with my new valve-gear, so much of the latter structure bein shown as is necessary to illustrate clear this invention; and Figs. 2, 3, and 1e-are sections on the lines A-A, B-B, CC, respectively, of Fig. 1. -The drive-wheel a is shown as resting upon the rail 'b and as connected through the crank-pin c and the mainor connecting rod d with the crosshead e, to which is suitably fastened the outer end of the pistonrod f the inner end of which is connected with the piston g that reciprocates in the usual way in the steam-cylinder h. A steamchest z' surmounts the cylinder h; and in this Steam-chest 1I there travels back and 'forth a valve j the lower end of which controls the flow of steam through the steamassages lc and the upper end of which is astened to a valve-rod m.'
The lower end off the eccentric arm n is mounted free to ,swing upon Vthe crankpin c and its upper end is connected by the eccentric rod o with the u per end of a swinging arm the lead-an -lap lever p, i
guide-yoke fr which connects the crank-ends of the guide-bars s, t.
Upon thev upper guide-bar s there is mounted a box u in which is journaled a valve-controlling device o the upper end of which is connected with the outer end of the valve-rod lmJ and the lower end of which is formed with a trunnion v which carries a slide-block w. Upon this slide-block w there is slidably mounted a link vformed near its center with a link-saddle By the lower radius-rod y the bottom of the link if; connected to the lower end of the lead-and-lap lever p, while the top of the link m is connected by the upper radius rod e to the lower end of a swinging arm known as a motion-arm 2 the upper end of which is journaled in the motion-arm .box suitably mounted upon the top guidear s.
In a suitable-journal-box 4 upon the upper guide-bar s there is journaled a tumbling-shaft 5 near one end of which there is fastened the lower end of a tumblingshaft arm 6 the upper end of which is connected by the reach-rod 7 with the reverselever 8 the upper end of which may be locked temporarily by the latch 9 with the toothed sector or quadrant 10.
The tumbling-shaft arm 6 is arranged in direct line with thc reverse-clever 8. Upon the other end of the tumbling-shaft 5 there is mounted a rocker-arm 11 which is by means of the link-lifting bar 12 connected with the link-saddle w', so that the link is suspended outside of the guides by this linklifter 12.
The throw of the link :v is controlled by the lower and upper radius-rods y, e, which the link by the upper radius-rod e.
The setting of thisvalve-gear is very simple as the lead is given by advanced angularity. of the radius-rods y and z.
The link is raised and lowered through 11" as hereinbefore described, with the top of L a l the tumbling-shaft arms 6 and 1l and the link-lifter 1,2 by manipulating the reverse lever 8.
The construction of this valve-gear is simple; the crosshead a and the main rod d are not connected with the valve-gear. All rods are substantially straight and are connected by hardened pins and bushings.
This valve-gear can be used on slidevalves or piston valves, as desired, and with inside or outside admission as may be deemed more desirable.
