The present invention relates to calcu-.
ting machines'generall but more particuly to a t pe of machine by theemplo eat of wiiich one is enabled to nick y nd accurately multiply figures, not y the long and tedious method emgloyedun ma- I5 chines now in use, that i y adding the multiplicand the number times required,
by the multiplier, but by multiplying the multiplicand successively b the units, tens and hundreds of the multip ier and after the last operation, obtaining the total result without any further operation of the machine. I
The invention has for its principal objects, to provide a multiplying machine which is capable of being operated to multiply any given s" a and after the answer thereof has been ob .ied, is capable of operation to wave the answer;-'to provide a structure luring separate multiphcand and multiplier operating mechanisms; one in which the multiplier key is automatically restored to its normal vosition on the multiplication of e multiphcand by the operated multiplier, 1 one employing a novel form-of computmeaus which when once set to 'correond to the multiplicand may be multiplied by any number in the multiplier without the necessity of being reset.

Each sector is provided with an angularly extending arm 16, which, when the sector is operated. byits controlling spring, strikes the lower end of a depressed multiplicand button or key 17 associated therewith.
The mu timicand buttons or keys 1? are of a type similar to that employed in the better known forms of adding machines and are arranged in rows of nine and the rows beginning from the right in Fig. 2 designat-' ing units, tens, hundreds, thousands and tens-thousands, but it is to be imderstood that any denomination of numbers may be employed. Each button or key 17 operates through a suitable guide 0 emng 18 in the housing 1, and also throng an openin 19 in a plate 20, supported by the side mem ers of the supporting frame. Slidably mounted on the plate 20 is arestoring late 21, pm vided with a plurality of ova openings 2 t through which the buttons or keys operate, and positioned adjacent each opening is a beveled la '23 Fig. 5 which is adapted to contact wit 1 the under-side of a shoulder 24 carried by the button or key, the two being normally held in disengaged position by a spring 26 coiled about a Stud 26, and positinned between the head thereof and the side frame of the machine. The frame is retained in its position of movement to the right by a catch 115 pivoted tea lug 116 on the frame 6 and said catch is normally forced downwardly to engage over the end member 100 by a spring 117 which compresses against an arm 118 formed above the catch 115.
The inner end of a trip arm 119 pivoted to a lug 120 carried by the .frame member 6 is normally forced outwardly and into contact with the arm 118 by a spring 121, (Fig. 8) and the .outer end of said trip arm is adapted to be engaged by lug 122 carried by the shaft 80, on the motement of the indicator wheel carriage a given distance from right to left, the lug ofperating the trip arm to release the catch mm the end plate 10.0 and permit the fr me to be forced to the left hv the spring 01, disengaging the pawl 91 from its associated ratchet and positioning the pawl 90 into operative relation relative to its ratchet.

From the above construction it will be apparent that on each operation of the shaft to in a forward direction the crank arms 94 and 95 will be operated, and will in turn actuate the pawls associated therewith, which, in accordance with the one engaged with its rack will cause the indicator wheel carriage to move one step in the direction of its travel.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letl. A calculating machine comprising multiplicand and multiplier keys, controlling means, means for simultaneously setting the controlling means in accordance with the operated multiplicand keys, means for operating the set controlling means in accordance with the operated multiplier key, and means for displaving the resu tant'sum represented by the depressed keys.
A calculating machine comprising multiplicand and multiplier keys, controlling means. means for simultaneously setting the controlling means in accordance with the operated nmltiplicand keys, means for operating the set controlling means in accordance with the operated multiplier key, and means controlled by the controlling means fordisplaying the resultant sum represented by the de ressed keys.

A'caleulating machine comprising multiplic und and multiplier keys, controlling means, means for simultaneously setting the controlling means in accordance with the operated multiplieand keys and for lockin the said not controlling means to be operatet in unison, means for operating the set and locked controlling means in accordance with the operated multiplier keys, and means for displaying the resultant sum represented by the depressed keys.

A calculating machine comprising multiplicaad and multiplier keys, controlling means. means for simultaneously setting the controlling means in accordance-with the operated multiplicand keys, means for operating the set controlling means in accordance with tho operated multiplier key, a. movable carriage, indicating mechanism carried thereby, and means associated with said indicating mechanism and said controlling meaps for operating said indicating mechanism to display t a resultant sum representedby the depressed keys.

A calculating machine comprising multiplicand and multiplier keys, controlling means, means for simultaneously setting the controlling means-in accordance with the operatedmultiplicand keys, moans for'operating the set controllin means in accordi...cc with the operate multiplier key, a movable carriage, indicating mechanism carried thereby, means operated on each operation of said set controlling means for'moving thacarriage by a ste motion in one direction, means associate with said indicating meehanismand cooperating with said controlling means for operating said indicating mechanism to display the resultant sum represented by the depressed keys, means for reversing the direction of movemeans cooperatin ment; of the carriage, and means operated on each operation of said set controlling means for moving the carriage by a step motion in a reverse direction to clear said indicating mechanism.

In a calculating machine comprising multiplicand and multiplier keys, controllin means comprising a urality of recess disks arranged in duplicate pairs, means for simultaneously rotating the controlling means to set the same in accordance with the operated multiplicand keys and for locking said set controlling means to be operated in unison, means for operating the locked controlling means in accordance with the operated multiplier keys, and means cooperating with the controlhn means for indicating the sum represented y the operated keys.
7 A calculating machine comprising controlling means, a lurality of sets of operating keys, means or simultaneously setting the controlling means in accordance with the operated keys of one set, means for operating the set controlling means in accordance with the operated keys of another set, and with said controlling means for indicating the sum represented by the operated keys.

A calculating machine comprising a plurality of sets of numeral keys, controling means provided with stepped seats, means for simultaneousl' setting the controllin means in accor ance with the operateddteys of one set and for locking the said set controlling means to be operated in unison, means for operating the set controlligg means in accordance with the o eratc tey of another set, indicating mec lanism, and means associated with said indicating mechanism and for receiving in the stepped seats of said controlling means to o crating said indicating mcchamsm to disp ay the resultant sum represented by the operated keys.

A calculating machine comprising a plurality of sets of numeral indicating keys, controlling means, means for settin the controlling means in accordance witi-the operated keys of-onc set and for locking the same to be operated in unison by the ceys of another set, means for operating the set controllin means in accordance with the operated hey of another set, indicating means, and means associated with the controlling ineuns and cooperating with said indicating means for indicating the sum represented by the operated keys.

A calculating machine comprising a pluralit of sets of numeral indicating keys, means or retaining the keys in their operated position, controlling means, means for setting the controlling means in accordance withthe operated he s of.one set and {or locking the same to is operated in unison hy the keys of another set, a movable carriage, indicator wheels carried thereby,
plungers associated with said indicator wheels and coiiperating with the controlling means, means operate n one direction for advancing the carriage, for operating the set controlling means to present the same to the plungers in accordance with the operated key of another set and for permitting the plungers to coiiperate with said controlling means and-operated in the opposite direction to restore the ,plnngers to normal position and permit the set controlling means to be restored to set position, means for restoring said controlling means to set position, and devices for restoring the operated keys to their normal ositionon the restoring of the plungers to t ieir normal pos'ition.

A calculating machine comprising a plurality of sets of numeral indicating keys, controlling disks arranged in airs and each pair rotatably mounted, said disks provided on their )eripheral edges with sets of stepped seats of different depths, means for rotating said pairs of disks and locking the same in accordancewith the operated keys of one set, nieaps for rotating said locked disks in accordance with the operated ke of another set, indicator wheels providc'i with numerals, and means associated therewith for seating in the stepped seats presented thereto for oierating said indicator wheels todis )lli the numerals thereon in accordance wit tie depth of said seats.

A calculating machine comprising a, plurality of sets of numeral indicating keys controlling means provided with recesses 0 various depths, means for independently opcrating said controlling means and lockin the same in accordance with theoperatet l keys of one set, means for'operating said locked disks in accordance with the operated ke of another set, a carriage carrying a pinra ity of indicator wheels, plunger mechanism associated with each of said controllin disks and for cooperating with the stepped seats therein, means for moving said plunger mechanism into and out oi said stepped seats, means for intermittently moving said carriage to position said indicator" wheels in cooperative relation with certain 'of said plunger mechanisms on the -movement of said mechanisms toward said seats and to position said indicator wheels in coi'iperativo relation with certain other of said plun er mechanisms on the movement of said mechanisms from said seats, and means operated by the complete. rotation of one of said indicator wheels for pcrmittin r the plunger mechanism to rotate the whedl adjacent said mentioned wheel-a distance equal to one stc more than the dc )th of the recess into which said plunger mec ianism has been seated.

In a calculating machine, the controlling device consisting of a plurality of r0-- tat-ably mounted means arranged in duplicate pairs and provided with sets of recesses of diiierent depths, means for operating said controlling meansfindicating mechanism provided with numerals, and means associated. therewith forseating in the recesses presented thereto for operating said indicatmg mechanism to display the numerals thereon i accordance with the depth of said recesses.

In a calculatin machine, the means for transmitting to the indicating mechanism the initial 0 eration of aplurality of rotatably mounted suitable keys, consistin of means arranged in duplicate pairs-and each rovided with sets of recesses of different epths, and means associated with the indicating mechanism, for displayin the numerals thereon in accordance witi the depth of said recesses.

In a calculatin machine, the means for transmitting to the indicating mechanism the initial operation of suita )le keys, consistin of disks arranged in duplicate pairs an each pair rotatably mounted, said disks provided on their peripheral edges with sets of stepped seats indicating mechanism provided with numerals, and means associated therewith for seating in said stepped seats presented thereto for operat-- ing said, indicating mechanism to display the numerals thereon in accordance with the depth of said seats.

In a calculating machine comprising operating keys, controlling means provided with recesses of diil'erent epthi-r, a carriage carryin indicatin mechanism, plungers associate with said controlling means and adapted to coiiperate with the recesses therein, a gear mechanism associated with each plunger and o erated by the movement thereof, means or moving said plungers in and out of said recesses, means for moving said carriage to position certainof said indicating mechanisms, in cooperative relation with certain of said gear mechanisms on the movement of said plungers into said recesses, and to position certam of said indicating mechanism in coiiperative relation with certain other of said gear mechanisms on the adapted to cooperate with the recesses there-' in, a gear mechanism associated with each plunger and operated by the movement thereof, means for moving said plungers 1n and out of said recesses, means for moving said carriage to position certain of said indicating mechanisms, in cooperative relation with certain of 5 id gear mechanisms on the movementof sai I plungcrsinto said recesses, to position certain of said indicating mechanism in cooperative r elation with certain other of said gear mechanisms on the moveanent of said plungers out of said recesses,
and means operated by the complete operation of one of said indicating mechanisms for permitting the plunger to operate the mechanism adjacent tosaid mentioned mechanism a distance equal to one step more than the depth of the recess into which said plunger mechanism has been seated.
