Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten nay ia isis.
Application led October 14, 1914. Serial No'. 866,598.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Mrs. NELLIE M. Mo- CAULEY, a citizen ofthe United States, re-
siding at Kalispell, in the county of Flatspraying insecticides or other liquids.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a spray which may utilize the water pressure in an ordinary garden hose or one of a similar nature, in spraying the liquid Without resulting in the mixture of the Water with the liquid.
` Another object of the invention is to provide a sprayer adapted to be placed in a pipe or hose line and providing a collapsible container disposed. in a body or cylinder and communicating with the spray nozzle, one end of the container acting as a piston and adapted to be forced along the cylinder by Water pressure behind in order to collapse `the container, lthus spraying the contents thereof out through the nozzle.
A further object is to provide a sprayer of the class described which Will be extremely simple, durable, eiiicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With. these and other objects in viewV which will become apparent as the descripf tlon proceeds, the lnvention resides 1n the construction, combina-tion and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of Which- Figure l represents an elevatlonal view partly in section of a sprayer constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 repre sents a longitudinal central sectional view taken therethrough. Fig. 3 represents an elevational view of the container removed from thedevice. Fig. 4 represents a transf ceiving a flanged cover Both the cap 6 and cover 7 are provided centrally with threaded nipples 8. A spraying nozzle 9 of the dravv-V any vvell known and suitable `construction may be threaded onto the nipple carried by cover 7, anda garden hose or similar Water conduit (not shown) may be connected to the opposite end of the cylinder by means of the nipple carried by cap 6.
The container comprises a flexible cylindrical body 10 which may be formed of any flexible material impervious to the fluid to be sprayed. At one end of the body is disposed the flanged disk 11 towhich the body is securely fastened. The opposite end of the body is provided `With an externally threaded collar l2. As indicated in Fig. 2 the container is disposed longitudinally Within the cylinder, and the collar 12 is threaded into the internally threaded-outer i i disk 11` in the opposite end of the cylinder ad]acent cap 6, and the diameter of said disk is such that the disk fits snugly lWithin the cylinder so as to form Ia piston capable of movement longitudinally of said cylinder.
Flexible container .10 is provided at suitably spaced points with encircling rings 14 secured to said container externally thereof and adapted to snuglyv t Within the cylinder 5. The rings are adapted to' prevent collapse of the container as the latter' isl being emptied. l
The container may be illed with the desired liquid and placed Within the cylinder, the latter of course being maintained in upright position during this process and the cover 7 may-be then threaded into place. The hose may be connected to thenipple carried by cap 6. When the Water is turned on it will enter the cylinder behind the disk or piston 11, and the Water pressure will `more said disk forwardly toward nozzle 9 against the internal'pressure of the liquid contained in the collapsible body 10, thus forcing said liquid through the spraying nozzle. As the piston moves forwardly in emptying the container the ringslfl will support the walls of body 10 and prevent them from collapsing, which action if not prevented mightresult in the blocking up orthe cuttingol" of communication to the spraying nozzle. The sprayer may beprovided with a handle 15, if so desired.
Such a structure as I have provided may A I be quickly attached to or detached from an ordinary garden hose ora conduit of a similar nature and the Water pressure 'in the hose may be utilized in the manner set forth kin spraying the liquid from the container, Withoutl resulting in the `mixture of the water with thev spr A aging liquid. Although I have escribed the embodiment of my invention, `Inlay desire to make such changes inthe construction,
combination and arrangement of parts `r thereof as do not depart from the spirit of u prising. a cylinder, a cap disposed o n one' the invention andthe scope of the ap` pended claims.
I claim.: I 1. 'A sprayer of the class describedjcomend of said cylinder for closing. the same, a threaded nipple carried by said cap, whereby thesprayer may be attached to ahos'e, a
. cover removably dlsposed iipon the opposite endof the cylinder, a threaded nipple carried by said cover whereby a spraying nozzle may be connected with the sprayer, a
' container dis losedjvvithin said cyllnder and including a exible'body portion, a'piston disposed at one end ofl sald container and acting as a closure therefor, said piston being movable longitudinally of said c "linder, i
a collar carried by the opposite en .of the body portion and connected lto the lcylinder internally thereof, and rings -car'ried in spaced relation -by said flexible body portion and fitting within said cylinder.
, 2..:'A device ofthe class described comthe'cylinder, a piston carried l prising a cylinder closed at one end, means .at the closedy end,` ofthe cylinder for connccting the same with a fluid conduit, a cover removably jsecured upon the opposite end of the cylinder, means carried bysaid cover for connection witha sprayer nozzle, a v'c'.o'mpressible' container removably dispreferred lthe containerl 'tainer removably disposed within the cylinder,'a piston secured tosaid container at one end within the cylinder and adapted to be actuated upon entrance of the fluid into the cylinder, for contracting the container, means for preventing collapse of the container andA means for establishing communication with said container at the end opposite the piston, with a spra er nozzle.
4. A device o the class described, coniprising a cylinder, a flexible andcollapsible A container disposed therein and provided at one end-with a ring snugl engaging within the cylinder, the endv of t e container adjacent the ring being open and being adapted to communicate with a sprayer nozzle, a pisto'n connected to the opposite end of the container and closing the sameand slidably engaging within the cylinder, rings carried by the container in s aced relation and engaged within the cy inder andadav ted to' prevent collapse of the container an means whereby fluid may` be forced into the cylinder against the. iston Wherebyjocollapse or ejecting the contents Mns. NELLIE M. MCCAULEY.
