UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. DAVIS, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
FEED-THOUGH.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. DAVIS, a citizen of ti e United States, residing at Fort Vorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in FeecLTroughs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides a trough for containing feed for poultry or small stock generally, said trough embodying a stand, a tray and a cover, the latter being movable with reference to the stand and the tray being fixed or movable and comprising one or more sections.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a. part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a feed trough embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the feed trough, the dotted lines showing the position of the top when thrown upward. Fig. 8 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4: is a transverse section of a modification. Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing a sectional tray.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and inclicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The stand comprises end pieces and longitudinal bars. Each of the end pieces comprises a cross piece 1 and an upright 2, the latter being of wedge form and arranged with the larger end uppermost. The longitudinal bars 3 are secured at their ends to the edges of the uprights 2 and serve to connect the end pieces as well as to brace the tray. The stand may be constructed of any material best adapted for the purpose, such as metal or wood or a combination thereof.
The tray 4: is of V form in cross section and is provided at the upper edges of its ends and sides with outer flanges 5 to extend over the end pieces and the upper longitudinal bars of the stand. The ends of the tray come close against the inner sides of the end pieces of the stand and the sides of the tray touch the inner sides of the loneitudinal bars 3 so as to be supported thereby. The tray may be formed of sheet metal Specification of Letters Patent.

or other suitable material and may comprise any number of compartments to keep the feed separated as well as to prevent tinterference between the stock when feeding. The tray may be stationary or removable, the latter being preferred as it admits of the same being readily cleaned.
A top is fitted to the stand and extends over the tray and is movable to admit of access being readily had to the tray and for convenience it is preferred to hinge the top to the stand, thereby preventing misplacement and insuring the parts occupying a fixed relative position. The top comprises end pieces and longitudinal plates. Each of the end pieces consists of a cross piece 6 and an upright 7. The plates 8 secured to end portions of the cross pieces 6 constitute platforms for receiving the stock when feeding. The inner portions of the platforms 8 overhang the tray and are spaced apart a distance corresponding to the width of the uprights 7. A. stop 9 is had along the inner edge of each of the platforms 8 and serves to prevent any water or dirt from entering the tray. These stops 9 also serve in a measure to prevent the stock from entering the tray and fouling the feed. The stop 9 further acts as a reinforcement to stiflen the platform. The plate 10 secured to the upper ends of the uprights 7 forms a cover, which prevents rain, snow or sleet from entering the feed. The cover projects beyond the vertical edges of the uprights 7 so as to overhang the inner edge portions of the platforms 8 and thereby guard against rain or the like entering the tray and dampening the feed, which it is preferred to keep perfectly dry. The outer edge portions of the cover are provided with pendent portions 11, which serve to stiffen and strengthen the cover and also serve to contract the openings through which the head of the stock feed ing projects in order to reach the feed in the tray. The top like the stand may be constructed of any material and may be hinged to the stand or fitted thereto in any manner to admit of its removal so that access may be easily had to the tray for any purpose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A feed trough comprising a stand sup-' porting a tray, and a top movably fitted to the stand and comprising end pieces and longitudinal plates, each of the end pieces comprising a cross piece and an upright, the plates secured to end portions of the cross pieces constituting platforms, and the plates secured to the uprights forming a cover, the edge portions of which project so as to overlap the inner edge portions of the platforms.
2. A feed trough comprising a stand supporting a tray, a top movably fitted to the stand and comprising end pieces and longitudinal plates, each of the end pieces comprising a cross piece and an upright, the plates secured to end portions of the cross pieces constituting platforms, and the plates secured to the uprights forming a cover, the edge portions of which project so as to overlap the inner edge portions of the platforms, said platforms having upwardly extending stops along their inner edges, and a cover having pending portions along their outer edges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
